1 Whosoever are servants under the yoke, let them count their masters worthy of all honour; lest the name of the Lord and his doctrine be blasphemed.
1
Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed.
2 But they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but serve them the rather, because they are faithful and beloved, who are partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
2
Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful to them on the ground that they are members of the church; rather they must serve them all the more, since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties.
3 If any man teach otherwise and consent not to the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to that doctrine which is according to godliness,
3
Whoever teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness,
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but sick about questions and strifes of words; from which arise envies, contentions, blasphemies, evil suspicions,
4
is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words. From these come envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions,
5 Conflicts of men corrupted in mind and who are destitute of the truth, supposing gain to be godliness.
5
and wrangling among those who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
6
Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment;
7 For we brought nothing into this world: and certainly we can carry nothing out.
7
for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it;
8 But having food and wherewith to be covered, with these we are content.
8
but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.
9 For they that will become rich fall into temptation and into the snare of the devil and into many unprofitable and hurtful desires, which drown men into destruction and perdition.
9
But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
10 For the desire of money is the root of all evils; which some coveting have erred from the faith and have entangled themselves in many sorrows.
10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
11 But thou, O man of God, fly these things: and pursue justice, godliness, faith, charity, patience, mildness.
11
But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith. Lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called and be it confessed a good confession before many witnesses.
12
Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 I charge thee before God who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate, a good confession:
13
In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you
14 That thou keep the commandment without spot, blameless, unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
14
to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the Blessed and only Mighty, the King of kings and Lord of lords:
15
which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.
16 Who only hath immortality and inhabiteth light inaccessible: whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and empire everlasting. Amen.
16
It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
17 Charge the rich of this world not to be highminded nor to trust in the uncertainty of riches, but in the living God (who giveth us abundantly all things to enjoy)
17
As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
18 To do good, to be rich in good work, to give easily, to communicate to others,
18
They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share,
19 To lay up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the true life.
19
thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.
20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding the profane novelties of words and oppositions of knowledge falsely so called.
20
Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the profane chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge;
21 Which some promising, have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
21
by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith. Grace be with you.
