1 Samuel 3

GNT 1 In those days, when the boy Samuel was serving the Lord under the direction of Eli, there were very few messages from the Lord, and visions from him were quite rare. NIV 1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. GNT 2 One night Eli, who was now almost blind, was sleeping in his own room; NIV 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. GNT 3 Samuel was sleeping in the sanctuary, where the sacred Covenant Box was. Before dawn, while the lamp was still burning, NIV 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was. GNT 4 the Lord called Samuel. He answered, "Yes, sir!" NIV 4 Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” GNT 5 and ran to Eli and said, "You called me, and here I am." But Eli answered, "I didn't call you; go back to bed." So Samuel went back to bed. NIV 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. GNT 6 The Lord called Samuel again. The boy did not know that it was the Lord, because the Lord had never spoken to him before. So he got up, went to Eli, and said, "You called me, and here I am." But Eli answered, "My son, I didn't call you; go back to bed." NIV 6 Again the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” GNT 8 The Lord called Samuel a third time; he got up, went to Eli, and said, "You called me, and here I am." Then Eli realized that it was the Lord who was calling the boy, NIV 8 A third time the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. GNT 9 so he said to him, "Go back to bed; and if he calls you again, say, "Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.' " So Samuel went back to bed. NIV 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. GNT 10 The Lord came and stood there, and called as he had before, "Samuel! Samuel!" Samuel answered, "Speak; your servant is listening." NIV 10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” GNT 11 The Lord said to him, "Some day I am going to do something to the people of Israel that is so terrible that everyone who hears about it will be stunned. NIV 11 And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. GNT 12 On that day I will carry out all my threats against Eli's family, from beginning to end. NIV 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. GNT 13 I have already told him that I am going to punish his family forever because his sons have spoken evil things against me. Eli knew they were doing this, but he did not stop them. NIV 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. GNT 14 So I solemnly declare to the family of Eli that no sacrifice or offering will ever be able to remove the consequences of this terrible sin." NIV 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’ ” GNT 15 Samuel stayed in bed until morning; then he got up and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli about the vision. NIV 15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, GNT 16 Eli called him, "Samuel, my boy!" "Yes, sir," answered Samuel. NIV 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” Samuel answered, “Here I am.” GNT 17 "What did the Lord tell you?" Eli asked. "Don't keep anything from me. God will punish you severely if you don't tell me everything he said." NIV 17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.” GNT 18 So Samuel told him everything; he did not keep anything back. Eli said, "He is the Lord; he will do whatever seems best to him." NIV 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.” GNT 19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and made come true everything that Samuel said. NIV 19 The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. GNT 20 So all the people of Israel, from one end of the country to the other, knew that Samuel was indeed a prophet of the Lord. NIV 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD. GNT 21 The Lord continued to reveal himself at Shiloh, where he had appeared to Samuel and had spoken to him. And when Samuel spoke, all Israel listened. NIV 21 The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
