1 Thessalonians 2

CEBA 1 As you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, our visit with you wasn't a waste of time. NIV 1 You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without results. CEBA 2 On the contrary, we had the courage through God to speak God's good news in spite of a lot of opposition, although we had already suffered and were publicly insulted, as you know. NIV 2 We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition. CEBA 3 Our appeal isn't based on false information, the wrong motives, or deception. NIV 3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. CEBA 4 Rather, we have been examined and approved by God to be trusted with the good news, and that's exactly how we speak. We aren't trying to please people, but we are trying to please God, who continues to examine our hearts. NIV 4 On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts. CEBA 5 As you know, we never used flattery, and God is our witness that we didn't have greedy motives. NIV 5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness. CEBA 6 We didn't ask for special treatment from people—not from you or from others— NIV 6 We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority. CEBA 7 although we could have thrown our weight around as Christ's apostles. Instead, we were gentle with you like a nursing mother caring for her own children. NIV 7 Instead, we were like young children among you. Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, CEBA 8 We were glad to share not only God's good news with you but also our very lives because we cared for you so much. NIV 8 so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well. CEBA 9 You remember, brothers and sisters, our efforts and hard work. We preached God's good news to you, while we worked night and day so we wouldn't be a burden on any of you. NIV 9 Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you. CEBA 10 You and God are witnesses of how holy, just, and blameless we were toward you believers. NIV 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. CEBA 11 Likewise, you know how we treated each of you like a father treats his own children. NIV 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, CEBA 12 We appealed to you, encouraged you, and pleaded with you to live lives worthy of the God who is calling you into his own kingdom and glory. NIV 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. CEBA 13 We also thank God constantly for this: when you accepted God's word that you heard from us, you welcomed it for what it truly is. Instead of accepting it as a human message, you accepted it as God's message, and it continues to work in you who are believers. NIV 13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. CEBA 14 Brothers and sisters, you became imitators of the churches of God in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus. This was because you also suffered the same things from your own people as they did from the Jews. NIV 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews CEBA 15 They killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and drove us out. They don't please God, and they are hostile to the entire human race NIV 15 who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone CEBA 16 when they try to stop us from speaking to the Gentiles so they can be saved. Their sins are constantly pushing the limit. God's wrath has caught up with them in the end. NIV 16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last. CEBA 17 Brothers and sisters, we were separated from you for a while physically but not in our hearts. We made every effort in our desire to see you again face-to-face. NIV 17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. CEBA 18 We wanted to come to you—I, Paul, tried over and over again—and Satan stopped us. NIV 18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way. CEBA 19 What is our hope, joy, or crown that we can brag about in front of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Isn't it all of you? NIV 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? CEBA 20 You are our glory and joy! NIV 20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
