Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible RHE
New Revised Standard NRS
1 Behold, this is the third time I am coming to you: In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word stand.
1
This is the third time I am coming to you. "Any charge must be sustained by the evidence of two or three witnesses."
2 I have told before and foretell, as present and now absent, to them that sinned before and to all the rest, that if I come again, I will not spare.
2
I warned those who sinned previously and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again, I will not be lenient—
3 Do you seek a proof of Christ that speaketh in me, who towards you is not weak, but is mighty in you?
3
since you desire proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful in you.
4 For although he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him: but we shall live with him by the power of God towards you.
4
For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.
5 Try your own selves if you be in the faith: prove ye yourselves. Know you not your own selves, that Christ Jesus is in you, unless perhaps you be reprobates?
5
Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless, indeed, you fail to meet the test!
6 But I trust that you shall know that we are not reprobates.
6
I hope you will find out that we have not failed.
7 Now we pray God that you may do no evil, not that we may appear approved, but that you may do that which is good and that we may be as reprobates.
7
But we pray to God that you may not do anything wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed.
8 For we can do nothing against the truth: but for the truth.
8
For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
9 For we rejoice that we are weak and you are strong. This also we pray for, your perfection.
9
For we rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. This is what we pray for, that you may become perfect.
10 Therefore I write these things, being absent, that, being present, I may not deal more severely, according to the power which the Lord hath given me unto edification and not unto destruction.
10
So I write these things while I am away from you, so that when I come, I may not have to be severe in using the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.
11 For the rest, brethren, rejoice, be perfect, take exhortation, be of one mind, have peace. And the God of grace and of love shall be with you.
11
Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
12 Salute one another with a holy kiss.
12
Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you.
13 (13-12) All the saints salute you.
13
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
14 (13-13) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the charity of God and the communication of the Holy Ghost be with you all. Amen.
