1 En el año dieciocho del rey Jeroboam, Abías comenzó a reinar sobre Judá.

In the eighteenth year of the rule of King Jeroboam, Abijah took over the throne of Judah.
2 Reinó tres años en Jerusalén; y el nombre de su madre era Micaías, hija de Uriel, de Guibeá. Y hubo guerra entre Abías y Jeroboam.

He ruled in Jerusalem three years. His mother was Maacah daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.
3 Y Abías comenzó la batalla con un ejército de valientes guerreros, cuatrocientos mil hombres escogidos, mientras que Jeroboam se puso en orden de batalla contra él con ochocientos mil hombres escogidos, valientes y fuertes.

Abijah started out with 400,000 of his best soldiers; Jeroboam countered with 800,000 of his best.
4 Entonces Abías se levantó en el monte Zemaraim que está en la región montañosa de Efraín, y dijo: Escuchadme, Jeroboam y todo Israel:

Abijah took a prominent position on Mount Zemaraim in the hill country of Ephraim and gave this speech: "Listen, Jeroboam and all Israel!
5 ¿No sabéis que el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, dio a David el reino sobre Israel para siempre, a él y a sus hijos con pacto de sal?

Don't you realize that God, the one and only God of Israel, established David and his sons as the permanent rulers of Israel, ratified by a 'covenant of salt' - God's kingdom ruled by God's king?
6 Pero Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, siervo de Salomón, hijo de David, se alzó y se rebeló contra su señor,

And what happened? Jeroboam, the son of Solomon's slave Nebat, rebelled against his master.
7 y se juntaron con él hombres indignos y malvados que prevalecieron sobre Roboam, hijo de Salomón, cuando Roboam era joven y tímido, y no pudo prevalecer contra ellos.

All the riff-raff joined his cause and were too much for Rehoboam, Solomon's true heir. Rehoboam didn't know his way around - besides he was a real wimp; he couldn't stand up against them.
8 Y ahora vosotros intentáis resistir al reinado del SEÑOR que está en manos de los hijos de David, porque sois una gran multitud y tenéis con vosotros los becerros de oro que Jeroboam os hizo por dioses.

"Taking advantage of that weakness, you are asserting yourself against the very rule of God that is delegated to David's descendants - you think you are so big with your huge army backed up by the golden-calf idols that Jeroboam made for you as gods!
9 ¿No habéis echado fuera a los sacerdotes del SEÑOR, los hijos de Aarón y los levitas, y os habéis hecho sacerdotes como los pueblos de otras tierras? Cualquiera que venga a consagrarse con un novillo y siete carneros, aun éste puede llegar a ser sacerdote de los que no son dioses.

But just look at what you've done - you threw out the priests of God, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests to suit yourselves, priests just like the pagans have. Anyone who shows up with enough money to pay for it can be a priest! A priest of No-God!
10 Mas en cuanto a nosotros, el SEÑOR es nuestro Dios y no le hemos abandonado; y los hijos de Aarón sirven al SEÑOR como sacerdotes, y los levitas en sus funciones.

"But for the rest of us in Judah, we're sticking with God. We have not traded him in for the latest model - we're keeping the tried and true priests of Aaron to lead us to God and the Levites to lead us in worship
11 Y cada mañana y cada tarde queman holocaustos e incienso aromático al SEÑOR; y el pan está colocado sobre la mesa limpia, y el candelabro de oro con sus lámparas para ser encendidas cada tarde; porque nosotros guardamos la ordenanza del SEÑOR nuestro Dios, pero vosotros le habéis abandonado.

by sacrificing Whole-Burnt-Offerings and aromatic incense to God at the daily morning and evening prayers, setting out fresh holy bread on a clean table, and lighting the lamps on the golden Lampstand every night. We continue doing what God told us to in the way he told us to do it; but you have rid yourselves of him.
12 Y he aquí, Dios está con nosotros a la cabeza, y sus sacerdotes con las trompetas de aviso para tocar el alarma contra vosotros. ¡Oh hijos de Israel!, no luchéis contra el SEÑOR, Dios de vuestros padres, porque nada lograréis.

"Can't you see the obvious? God is on our side; he's our leader. And his priests with trumpets are all ready to blow the signal to battle. O Israel - don't fight against God, the God of your ancestors. You will not win this battle."
13 Pero Jeroboam había puesto una emboscada para llegar a ellos por detrás, de manera que Israel estaba frente a Judá, y la emboscada estaba detrás de éstos.

While Abijah was speaking, Jeroboam had sent men around to take them by surprise from the rear: Jeroboam in front of Judah and the ambush behind.
14 Cuando Judá se volvió, he aquí que eran atacados por delante y por detrás. Clamaron, pues, al SEÑOR, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas.

When Judah looked back, they saw they were attacked front and back. They prayed desperately to God, the priests blew their trumpets, and the soldiers of Judah shouted their battle cry.
15 Entonces los hombres de Judá lanzaron el grito de guerra; y sucedió que mientras los hombres de Judá lanzaban el grito de guerra, Dios hirió a Jeroboam y a todo Israel delante de Abías y de Judá.

At the battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
16 Y huyeron los hijos de Israel delante de Judá, y Dios los entregó en sus manos.

The army of Israel scattered before Judah; God gave them the victory.
17 Y Abías y su gente los derrotaron con una gran matanza, y cayeron muertos quinientos mil hombres escogidos de Israel.

Abijah and his troops slaughtered them - 500,000 of Israel's best fighters were killed that day.
18 Así los hijos de Israel fueron humillados en aquel tiempo, y los hijos de Judá prevalecieron porque se apoyaron en el SEÑOR, Dios de sus padres.

The army of Israel fell flat on its face - a humiliating defeat. The army of Judah won hands down because they trusted God, the God of their ancestors.
19 Y Abías persiguió a Jeroboam, y le tomó varias ciudades, Betel con sus aldeas, Jesana con sus aldeas y Efraín con sus aldeas.

Abijah followed up his victory by pursuing Jeroboam, taking the towns of Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron with their surrounding villages.
20 Jeroboam no volvió a recuperar poder en los días de Abías; y el SEÑOR lo hirió, y murió.

Jeroboam never did recover from his defeat while Abijah lived. Later on God struck him down and he died.
21 Abías se hizo poderoso, y tomó para sí catorce mujeres; y engendró a veintidós hijos y dieciséis hijas.

Meanwhile Abijah flourished; he married fourteen wives and ended up with a family of twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
22 Y los demás hechos de Abías, y sus caminos y sus palabras están escritos en la historia del profeta Iddo.
