1 Y Abías durmió con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David, y su hijo Asa reinó en su lugar. Y el país estuvo en paz por diez años durante sus días.

2 Y Asa hizo lo bueno y lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR su Dios,

3 porque quitó los altares extranjeros y los lugares altos, destruyó los pilares sagrados, derribó las Aseras ,

4 y ordenó a Judá que buscara al SEÑOR, Dios de sus padres y cumpliera la ley y el mandamiento.

5 También quitó los lugares altos y los altares de incienso de todas las ciudades de Judá. Y bajo él, el reino estuvo en paz.

6 Y edificó ciudades fortificadas en Judá, ya que el país estaba en paz y nadie estaba en guerra con él durante aquellos años, porque el SEÑOR le había dado tranquilidad.

7 Dijo, pues, a Judá: Edifiquemos estas ciudades y cerquémoslas de murallas y torres, puertas y barras. La tierra es aún nuestra, porque hemos buscado al SEÑOR nuestro Dios; le hemos buscado, y El nos ha dado tranquilidad por todas partes. Edificaron, pues, y prosperaron.

8 Asa tenía un ejército de trescientos mil hombres de Judá que llevaban escudos grandes y lanzas, y doscientos ochenta mil de Benjamín que llevaban escudos y usaban arcos; todos ellos valientes guerreros.

9 Y salió contra ellos Zera el etíope con un ejército de un millón de hombres y trescientos carros, y vino hasta Maresa.

10 Y Asa salió a su encuentro, y se pusieron en orden de batalla en el valle de Sefata junto a Maresa.

11 Entonces Asa invocó al SEÑOR su Dios, y dijo: SEÑOR, no hay nadie más que tú para ayudar en la batalla entre el poderoso y los que no tienen fuerza; ayúdanos, oh SEÑOR Dios nuestro, porque en ti nos apoyamos y en tu nombre hemos venido contra esta multitud. Oh SEÑOR, tú eres nuestro Dios; que no prevalezca hombre alguno contra ti.

12 Y el SEÑOR derrotó a los etíopes delante de Asa y delante de Judá, y los etíopes huyeron.

13 Y Asa y el pueblo que estaba con él los persiguieron hasta Gerar; y cayeron tantos etíopes que no pudieron rehacerse, porque fueron destrozados delante del SEÑOR y delante de su ejército. Y recogieron muchísimo botín.

14 Destruyeron todas las ciudades alrededor de Gerar, porque el terror del SEÑOR había caído sobre ellos; y saquearon todas las ciudades pues había mucho botín en ellas.

15 También hirieron a los que poseían ganado, y se llevaron gran cantidad de ovejas y camellos. Entonces regresaron a Jerusalén.

The Message Bible MSG

1 Abijah died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. His son Asa became the next king. For ten years into Asa's reign the country was at peace.

2 Asa was a good king. He did things right in God's eyes.

3 He cleaned house: got rid of the pagan altars and shrines, smashed the sacred stone pillars, and chopped down the sex-and-religion groves (Asherim).

4 He told Judah to center their lives in God, the God of their fathers, to do what the law said, and to follow the commandments.

5 Because he got rid of all the pagan shrines and altars in the cities of Judah, his kingdom was at peace.

6 Because the land was quiet and there was no war, he was able to build up a good defense system in Judah. God kept the peace.

7 Asa said to his people, "While we have the chance and the land is quiet, let's build a solid defense system, fortifying our cities with walls, towers, gates, and bars. We have this peaceful land because we sought God; he has given us rest from all troubles." So they built and enjoyed prosperity.

8 Asa had an army of 300,000 Judeans, equipped with shields and spears, and another 280,000 Benjaminites who were shield bearers and archers. They were all courageous warriors.

9 Zerah the Ethiopian went to war against Asa with an army of a million plus 300 chariots and got as far as Mareshah.

10 Asa met him there and prepared to fight from the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.

11 Then Asa prayed to God, "O God, you aren't impressed by numbers or intimidated by a show of force once you decide to help: Help us, O God; we have come out to meet this huge army because we trust in you and who you are. Don't let mere mortals stand against you!"

12 God defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah; the Ethiopians ran for their lives.

13 Asa and his men chased them as far as Gerar; so many of the Ethiopians were killed that there was no fight left in them - a massacre before God and his troops; Judah carted off loads of plunder.

14 They devastated all the towns around Gerar whose people were helpless, paralyzed by the fear of God, and looted the country.

15 They also attacked herdsmen and brought back a lot of sheep and camels to Jerusalem.
