1 Entonces Josafat, rey de Judá, regresó en paz a su casa en Jerusalén.

2 Y salió a su encuentro el vidente Jehú, hijo de Hananí, y dijo al rey Josafat: ¿Vas a ayudar al impío y amar a los que odian al SEÑOR, y con esto traer sobre ti la ira del SEÑOR?

3 Sin embargo, se han hallado en ti cosas buenas, porque has quitado las Aseras de la tierra y has dispuesto tu corazón para buscar a Dios.

4 Y habitó Josafat en Jerusalén, y volvió a salir por entre el pueblo, desde Beerseba hasta la región montañosa de Efraín, y los hizo volver al SEÑOR, Dios de sus padres.

5 Puso jueces en el país en todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, ciudad por ciudad,

6 y dijo a los jueces: Mirad lo que hacéis, pues no juzgáis en lugar de los hombres, sino en lugar del SEÑOR que está con vosotros cuando hacéis justicia.

7 Ahora pues, que el temor del SEÑOR esté sobre vosotros; tened cuidado en lo que hacéis, porque con el SEÑOR nuestro Dios no hay injusticia ni acepción de personas ni soborno.

8 También en Jerusalén Josafat puso algunos de los levitas y de los sacerdotes y algunos de los jefes de las familias de Israel, para el juicio del SEÑOR y para juzgar querellas entre los habitantes de Jerusalén.

9 Y les dio órdenes, diciendo: Así haréis en el temor del SEÑOR, con fidelidad y de todo corazón.

10 Cuando llegue a vosotros cualquier querella de vuestros hermanos que habitan en sus ciudades, entre sangre y sangre, entre ley y mandamiento, estatutos y ordenanzas, vosotros los amonestaréis para que no sean culpables delante del SEÑOR, y la ira no venga sobre vosotros ni sobre vuestros hermanos. Así haréis y no seréis culpables.

11 Y he aquí, Amarías, el sumo sacerdote, presidirá sobre vosotros en todos los asuntos del SEÑOR, y Zebadías, hijo de Ismael, jefe de la casa de Judá, en todos los asuntos del rey. También los levitas serán oficiales delante de vosotros. Sed valientes y obrad, y sea el SEÑOR con el bueno.

1 But Jehoshaphat king of Judah got home safe and sound.

2 Jehu, son of Hanani the seer, confronted King Jehoshaphat: "You have no business helping evil, cozying up to God-haters. Because you did this, God is good and angry with you.

3 But you're not all bad - you made a clean sweep of the polluting sex-and-religion shrines; and you were single-minded in seeking God."

4 Jehoshaphat kept his residence in Jerusalem but made a regular round of visits among the people, from Beersheba in the south to Mount Ephraim in the north, urging them to return to God, the God of their ancestors.

5 And he was diligent in appointing judges in the land - each of the fortress cities had its judge.

6 He charged the judges: "This is serious work; do it carefully. You are not merely judging between men and women; these are God's judgments that you are passing on.

7 Live in the fear of God - be most careful, for God hates dishonesty, partiality, and bribery."

8 In Jerusalem Jehoshaphat also appointed Levites, priests, and family heads to decide on matters that had to do with worship and mediating local differences.

9 He charged them: "Do your work in the fear of God; be dependable and honest in your duties.

10 When a case comes before you involving any of your fellow citizens, whether it seems large (like murder) or small (like matters of interpretation of the law), you are responsible for warning them that they are dealing with God. Make that explicit, otherwise both you and they are going to be dealing with God's wrath. Do your work well or you'll end up being as guilty as they are.

11 "Amariah the chief priest is in charge of all cases regarding the worship of God; Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, is in charge of all civil cases; the Levites will keep order in the courts. Be bold and diligent. And God be with you as you do your best."
