1 Y Josafat durmió con sus padres, y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David, y su hijo Joram reinó en su lugar.

Jehoshaphat died and was buried in the family cemetery in the City of David. Jehoram his son was the next king.
2 Y tuvo hermanos, los hijos de Josafat: Azarías, Jehiel, Zacarías, Azaryahu, Micael y Sefatías. Todos estos eran hijos de Josafat, rey de Israel.

Jehoram's brothers were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah - the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Judah.
3 Su padre les había dado muchos presentes de plata, oro y cosas preciosas, y ciudades fortificadas en Judá, pero dio el reino a Joram porque era el primogénito.

Their father had lavished them with gifts - silver, gold, and other valuables, plus the fortress cities in Judah. But Jehoram was his firstborn son and he gave him the kingdom of Judah.
4 Cuando Joram tomó posesión del reino de su padre y se hizo fuerte, mató a espada a todos sus hermanos, y también a algunos de los jefes de Israel.

But when Jehoram had taken over his father's kingdom and had secured his position, he killed all his brothers along with some of the government officials.
5 Joram tenía treinta y dos años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó ocho años en Jerusalén.

Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king and ruled in Jerusalem for eight years.
6 Y anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel, tal como había hecho la casa de Acab (pues la hija de Acab era su mujer), e hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR.

He imitated Israel's kings and married into the Ahab dynasty. God considered him an evil man.
7 Sin embargo el SEÑOR no quiso destruir la casa de David a causa del pacto que había hecho con David, y porque le había prometido darle una lámpara a él y a sus hijos para siempre.

But despite that, because of his covenant with David, God was not yet ready to destroy the descendants of David; he had, after all, promised to keep a light burning for David and his sons.
8 En sus días se rebeló Edom contra el dominio de Judá, y pusieron rey sobre ellos.

During Jehoram's reign, Edom revolted from Judah's rule and set up their own king.
9 Entonces pasó Joram con sus jefes, y todos sus carros con él. Y aconteció que se levantó de noche y atacó a los edomitas que lo tenían cercado a él y a los jefes de los carros.

Jehoram responded by setting out with his officers and chariots. Edom surrounded him, but in the middle of the night he and his charioteers broke through the lines and hit Edom hard.
10 Y Edom se rebeló contra el dominio de Judá hasta el día de hoy. Entonces Libna se rebeló en ese mismo tiempo contra su dominio, porque él había abandonado al SEÑOR, Dios de sus padres.

Edom continues in revolt against Judah right up to the present. Even little Libnah revolted at that time. The evidence accumulated: Since Jehoram had abandoned God, the God of his ancestors, God was abandoning him.
11 Hizo además lugares altos en los montes de Judá, haciendo que los habitantes de Jerusalén se prostituyeran y que Judá se desviara.

He even went so far as to build pagan sacred shrines in the mountains of Judah. He brazenly led Jerusalem away from God, seducing the whole country.
12 Y le llegó una carta del profeta Elías, que decía: Así dice el SEÑOR, Dios de tu padre David: "Por cuanto no has andado en los caminos de Josafat tu padre, ni en los caminos de Asa, rey de Judá,

One day he got a letter from Elijah the prophet. It read, "From God, the God of your ancestor David - a message: Because you have not kept to the ways of Jehoshaphat your father and Asa your grandfather, kings of Judah,
13 sino que has andado en el camino de los reyes de Israel, y has hecho que Judá y los habitantes de Israel se hayan prostituido como se prostituyó la casa de Acab, y también has matado a tus hermanos, tu propia familia, que eran mejores que tú,

but have taken up with the ways of the kings of Israel in the north, leading Judah and Jerusalem away from God, going step by step down the apostate path of Ahab and his crew - why, you even killed your own brothers, all of them better men than you! -
14 he aquí, el SEÑOR herirá con gran azote a tu pueblo, a tus hijos, a tus mujeres y a todas tus posesiones;

God is going to afflict your people, your wives, your sons, and everything you have with a terrible plague.
15 y tú sufrirás una grave enfermedad, una enfermedad de los intestinos, hasta que día tras día se te salgan a causa de la enfermedad."

And you are going to come down with a terrible disease of the colon, painful and humiliating."
16 Entonces el SEÑOR incitó contra Joram el espíritu de los filisteos y de los árabes que eran vecinos de los etíopes;

The trouble started with an invasion. God incited the Philistines and the Arabs who lived near the Ethiopians to attack Jehoram.
17 y subieron contra Judá y la invadieron, y se llevaron todas las posesiones que se hallaban en la casa del rey, y también a sus hijos y a sus mujeres, de modo que no le quedó más hijo que Joacaz, el menor de sus hijos.

They came to the borders of Judah, forced their way in, and plundered the place - robbing the royal palace of everything in it including his wives and sons. One son, his youngest, Ahaziah, was left behind.
18 Después de todo esto, el SEÑOR lo hirió en los intestinos con una enfermedad incurable.

The terrible and fatal disease in his colon followed. After about two years he was totally incontinent and died writhing in pain.
19 Y aconteció que con el correr del tiempo, al cabo de dos años, los intestinos se le salieron a causa de su enfermedad, y murió con grandes dolores. Y su pueblo no le encendió una hoguera como la hoguera que habían encendido por sus padres.

His people didn't honor him by lighting a great bonfire, as was customary with his ancestors.
20 Tenía treinta y dos años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó ocho años en Jerusalén; y murió sin que nadie lo lamentara, y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David, pero no en los sepulcros de los reyes.

He was thirty-two years old when he became king and reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. There were no tears shed when he died - it was good riddance! - and they buried him in the City of David, but not in the royal cemetery.
