1 ORA quando il regno di Roboamo fu stabilito e fortificato, egli, insieme con tutto Israele, lasciò la Legge del Signore.

2 Laonde l’anno quinto del re Roboamo, Sisac, re di Egitto, salì contro a Gerusalemme perciocchè essi aveano misfatto contro al Signore,

3 con mille dugento carri, e con sessantamila cavalieri, e popolo senza fine, ch’era venuto con lui di Egitto, Libii, Succhei, ed Etiopi;

4 e prese le città forti di Giuda, e venne fino in Gerusalemme.

5 Allora il profeta Semaia venne a Roboamo, ed a’ capi di Giuda, i quali si erano raccolti in Gerusalemme, d’innanzi a Sisac, e disse loro: Così ha detto il Signore: Voi mi avete abbandonato, ed io altresì vi ho abbandonati in mano di Sisac.

6 Ed i capi d’Israele, e il re, si umiliarono, e dissero: Il Signore è giusto.

7 E il Signore vide che si erano umiliati. E la parola del Signore fu indirizzata a Semaia, dicendo: Essi si sono umiliati; io non li distruggerò, ma fra poco darò loro salvezza; e l’ira mia non si verserà sopra Gerusalemme per mano di Sisac.

8 Nondimeno essi gli saranno servi; e conosceranno la differenza che vi è tra il servirmi, e il servire a’ regni della terra.

9 Sisac adunque, re di Egitto, salì contro a Gerusalemme, e prese i tesori della Casa del Signore, ed i tesori della casa del re; egli prese ogni cosa; prese ancora gli scudi d’oro che Salomone avea fatti.

10 E il re Roboamo fece degli scudi di rame, in luogo di quelli, e li rimise in man de’ capitani de’ sergenti, che facevano la guardia alla porta della casa reale.

11 E quando il re entrava nella Casa del Signore, i sergenti venivano, e li levavano; e poi li riportavano nella loggia de’ sergenti.

12 Così, perchè egli si umiliò, l’ira del Signore si stolse da lui, ed egli non volle fare una intiera distruzione; ed anche certo in Giuda vi erano di buone cose.

13 Il re Roboamo adunque si fortificò in Gerusalemme, e regnò; perciocchè egli era d’età di quarantun’anno, quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò diciassette anni in Gerusalemme, città la quale il Signore avea eletta d’infra tutte le tribù d’Israele, per mettervi il suo Nome. E il nome di sua madre era Naama Ammonita.

14 Ed egli fece ciò che è male; perciocchè non dispose l’animo suo a ricercare il Signore.

15 Ora, quant’è a’ fatti di Roboamo, primi ed ultimi, non sono essi scritti nel libro del profeta Semaia, e fra le genealogie d’Iddo veggente? come ancora le guerre che furono del continuo fra Roboamo e Geroboamo?

16 E Roboamo giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito nella Città di Davide; ed Abia, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

1 As soon as Rehoboam had established his authority as king, he and all his people abandoned the Law of the Lord.

2 In the fifth year of Rehoboam's reign their disloyalty to the Lord was punished. King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem

3 with an army of twelve hundred chariots, sixty thousand cavalry, and more soldiers than could be counted, including Libyan, Sukkite, and Ethiopian troops.

4 He captured the fortified cities of Judah and advanced as far as Jerusalem.

5 Shemaiah the prophet went to King Rehoboam and the Judean leaders who had gathered in Jerusalem to escape Shishak. He said to them, "This is the Lord's message to you: "You have abandoned me, so now I have abandoned you to Shishak.' "

6 The king and the leaders admitted that they had sinned, and they said, "What the Lord is doing is just."

7 When the Lord saw this, he spoke again to Shemaiah and said to him, "Because they admit their sin, I will not destroy them. But when Shishak attacks, they will barely survive. Jerusalem will not feel the full force of my anger,

8 but Shishak will conquer them, and they will learn the difference between serving me and serving earthly rulers."

9 King Shishak came to Jerusalem and took the treasures from the Temple and from the palace. He took everything, including the gold shields that King Solomon had made.

10 To replace them, Rehoboam made bronze shields and entrusted them to the officers responsible for guarding the palace gates.

11 Every time the king went to the Temple, the guards carried the shields and then returned them to the guardroom.

12 Because he submitted to the Lord, the Lord's anger did not completely destroy him, and things went well for Judah.

13 Rehoboam ruled in Jerusalem and increased his power as king. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he ruled for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen from all the territory of Israel as the place where he was to be worshiped. Rehoboam's mother was Naamah, from the land of Ammon.

14 He did what was evil, because he did not try to find the Lord's will.

15 Rehoboam's acts from beginning to end and his family records are found in [The History of Shemaiah the Prophet] and [The History of Iddo the Prophet.] Rehoboam and Jeroboam were constantly at war with each other.

16 Rehoboam died and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City and his son Abijah succeeded him as king.
