1 L’ANNO diciottesimo del re Geroboamo, Abia cominciò a regnare sopra Giuda.

2 Egli regnò tre anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Micaia, figliuola di Uriel, da Ghibea. Or vi fu guerra fra Abia e Geroboamo.

3 Ed Abia venne a battaglia con un esercito di quattrocentomila combattenti, tutti uomini scelti. E Geroboamo ordinò la battaglia contro a lui con ottocentomila combattenti, tutti uomini scelti.

4 Ed Abia si levò in piè disopra al monte di Semaraim, che è nelle montagne di Efraim, e disse: O Geroboamo, e tutto Israle, ascoltatemi:

5 Non dovete voi sapere che il Signore Iddio d’Israele ha dato a Davide il regno sopra Israele, in perpetuo? a lui, dico, ed a’ suoi figliuoli, per patto inviolabile?

6 Ma Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, servo di Salomone, figliuolo di Davide, si è levato, e si è ribellato contro al suo signore.

7 E certi uomini da nulla e scellerati, si sono adunati appresso di lui, e si sono fortificati contro a Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone, il quale essendo giovane, e di cuor molle, non ha contrastato loro valorosamente.

8 Ed ora voi pensate di resistere ostinatamente al regno del Signore, che è fra le mani de’ figliuoli di Davide; perciocchè voi siete una gran moltitudine, ed avete con voi i vitelli d’oro che Geroboamo vi ha fatti per dii.

9 Non avete voi scacciati i sacerdoti del Signore, i figliuoli d’Aaronne, ed i Leviti? e non vi avete voi fatti de’ sacerdoti nella maniera de’ popoli de’ paesi? chiunque si è presentato per consacrarsi con un giovenco, e con sette montoni? e così è divenuto sacerdote di quelli che non son dii.

10 Ma quant’è a noi, il Signore è l’Iddio nostro, e noi non l’abbiamo abbandonato; ed i sacerdoti, che ministrano al Signore, sono figliuoli d’Aaronne; ed i Leviti sono impiegati a questa opera;

11 ed ogni mattina, ed ogni sera ardono gli olocausti al Signore, co’ profumi degli aromati; ed ordinano i pani che si devono ordinare sopra la tavola pura; ed ogni sera accendono il candelliere d’oro con le sue lampane; perciocchè noi osserviamo ciò che il Signore ha ordinato; ma voi avete abbandonato il Signore.

12 Ed ecco, Iddio è con noi in capo, insieme co’ suoi sacerdoti, e con le trombe di suono squillante, per sonar con esse contro a voi. Figliuoli d’Israele, non combattete contro al Signore Iddio de’ padri vostri; perciocchè voi non prosperete.

13 In quel mezzo Geroboamo fece volgere un agguato, perchè venisse sopra que’ di Giuda di dietro; talchè Giuda avea gl’Israeliti in fronte, e l’agguato alle spalle.

14 E que’ di Giuda si rivoltarono, e videro ch’erano assaliti da fronte e dalle spalle; laonde gridarono al Signore, e i sacerdoti sonarono con le trombe.

15 La gente di Giuda ancora gittò grida; e, come gittavano quelle grida, Iddio sconfisse Geroboamo e tutto Israele davanti ad Abia ed a Giuda.

16 Ed i figliuoli d’Israele fuggirono d’innanzi a Giuda; e Iddio li diede loro nelle mani.

17 Ed Abia ed il suo popolo li percossero d’una grande sconfitta; e caddero uccisi cinquecentomila uomini scelti d’Israele.

18 Così i figliuoli d’Israele furono in quel tempo abbassati, ed i figliuoli di Giuda si rinforzarono; perciocchè si erano appoggiati sopra il Signore Iddio de’ padri loro.

19 Ed Abia perseguitò Geroboamo, e gli prese alcune città: Betel, e le terre del suo territorio; Iesana, e le terre del suo territorio; ed Efraim, e le terre del suo territorio.

20 E Geroboamo non ebbe più potere alcuno al tempo di Abia; e il Signore lo percosse, ed egli morì.

21 Ed Abia si fortificò, e prese quattordici mogli, e generò ventidue figliuoli, e sedici figliuole.

22 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Abia, e de’ suoi portamenti, e de’ suoi fatti; queste cose sono scritte nelle memorie del profeta Iddio.

1 In the eighteenth year of the reign of King Jeroboam of Israel, Abijah became king of Judah,

2 and he ruled three years in Jerusalem. His mother was Micaiah daughter of Uriel, from the city of Gibeah. War broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam.

3 Abijah raised an army of 400,000 soldiers, and Jeroboam opposed him with an army of 800,000.

4 The armies met in the hill country of Ephraim. King Abijah went up Mount Zemaraim and called out to Jeroboam and the Israelites: "Listen to me!" he said.

5 "Don't you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, made an unbreakable covenant with David, giving him and his descendants kingship over Israel forever?

6 Jeroboam son of Nebat rebelled against Solomon, his king.

7 Later he gathered together a group of worthless scoundrels, and they forced their will on Rehoboam son of Solomon, who was too young and inexperienced to resist them.

8 Now you propose to fight against the royal authority that the Lord gave to David's descendants. You have a huge army and have with you the gold bull-calves that Jeroboam made to be your gods.

9 You drove out the Lord's priests, the descendants of Aaron, and you drove out the Levites. In their place you appointed priests in the same way that other nations do. Anybody who comes along with a bull or seven sheep can get himself consecrated as a priest of those so-called gods of yours.

10 "But we still serve the Lord our God and have not abandoned him. Priests descended from Aaron perform their duties, and Levites assist them.

11 Every morning and every evening they offer him incense and animal sacrifices burned whole. They present the offerings of bread on a table that is ritually clean, and every evening they light the lamps on the gold lampstand. We do what the Lord has commanded, but you have abandoned him.

12 God himself is our leader and his priests are here with trumpets, ready to blow them and call us to battle against you. People of Israel, don't fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors! You can't win!"

13 Meanwhile Jeroboam had sent some of his troops to ambush the Judean army from the rear, while the rest faced them from the front.

14 The Judeans looked around and saw that they were surrounded. They cried to the Lord for help, and the priests blew the trumpets.

15 The Judeans gave a loud shout, and led by Abijah, they attacked; God defeated Jeroboam and the Israelite army.

16 The Israelites fled from the Judeans, and God let the Judeans overpower them.

17 Abijah and his army dealt the Israelites a crushing defeat - half a million of Israel's best soldiers were killed.

18 And so the people of Judah were victorious over Israel, because they relied on the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam's army and occupied some of his cities: Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron, and the villages near each of these cities.

20 Jeroboam never regained his power during Abijah's reign. Finally the Lord struck him down, and he died.

21 Abijah, however, grew more powerful. He had fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
