2 Cronache 14

1 ED Abia giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito nella Città di Davide; ed Asa, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo. Al suo tempo il paese ebbe riposo lo spazio di dieci anni.

2 Ed Asa fece ciò che piace ed è grato al Signore Iddio suo.

3 E tolse via gli altari, e gli alti luoghi degli stranieri, e spezzò le statue, e tagliò i boschi;

4 e comandò a Giuda di ricercare il Signore Iddio dei suoi padri, e di mettere ad effetto la sua Legge ed i suoi comandamenti.

5 Tolse eziandio via, da tutte le città di Giuda, gli alti luoghi ed i simulacri; e il regno ebbe riposo mentre egli visse.

6 Ed egli edificò delle città di fortezza in Giuda; perciocchè il paese era in riposo; e in quel tempo non vi fu alcuna guerra contro a lui; perciocchè il Signore gli avea dato riposo.

7 Laonde egli disse a Giuda: Edifichiamo queste città, ed intorniamole di mura, e di torri, e di porte, e di sbarre, mentre siamo padroni del paese; perciocchè noi abbiamo ricercato il Signore Iddio nostro; ed avendolo ricercato, egli ci ha dato riposo d’ogn’intorno. Così le edificarono, e prosperarono.

8 Or Asa avea un esercito di trecentomila uomini di Giuda, che portavano scudo e lancia; e di dugentotrentamila di Beniamino, che portavano scudo e tiravano con l’arco; tutti uomini di valore.

9 E Zera Etiopo uscì, contro a loro con un esercito di mille migliaia d’uomini, e di trecento carri; e venne fino in Maresa.

10 Ed Asa uscì incontro a lui; ed essi ordinarono la battaglia nella valle di Sefata, presso di Maresa.

11 Allora Asa gridò al Signore Iddio suo, e disse: O Signore, appo te non vi è alcuna differenza di aiutare, così chi non ha forze alcune, come chi ne ha di grandi; soccorrici, o Signore Iddio nostro; perciocchè noi ci siamo appoggiati sopra te, e nel tuo Nome siamo venuti contro a questa moltitudine; tu sei il Signore Iddio nostro; non lasciare che l’uomo prevalga contro a te.

12 Ed il Signore sconfisse gli Etiopi davanti ad Asa, e davanti a Giuda; e gli Etiopi fuggirono.

13 Ed Asa, e la gente ch’era con lui, li perseguitarono fino in Gherar; e morirono tanti Etiopi ch’essi non si poterono più ristorare; perciocchè furono rotti dal Signore, e dal suo esercito; e ne furono portate spoglie in grandissima quantità.

14 Percossero anche tutte le città ch’erano d’intorno a Gherar; perciocchè lo spavento del Signore era sopra loro; e predarono tutte quelle città; perciocchè vi era dentro una grande preda.

15 Percossero ancora le tende delle mandre, e ne menarono pecore, e cammelli, in gran numero. Poi se ne tornarono in Gerusalemme.

Good News Translation GNT

1 King Abijah died and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City. His son Asa succeeded him as king, and under Asa the land enjoyed peace for ten years.

2 Asa pleased the Lord, his God, by doing what was right and good.

3 He removed the foreign altars and the pagan places of worship, broke down the sacred stone columns, and cut down the symbols of the goddess Asherah.

4 He commanded the people of Judah to do the will of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and to obey his teachings and commands.

5 Because he abolished the pagan places of worship and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah, the kingdom was at peace under his rule.

6 He built fortifications for the cities of Judah during this time, and for several years there was no war, because the Lord gave him peace.

7 He told the people of Judah, "Let us fortify the cities by building walls and towers, and gates that can be shut and barred. We have control of the land because we have done the will of the Lord our God. He has protected us and given us security on every side." And so they built and prospered.

8 King Asa had an army of 300,000 men from Judah, armed with shields and spears, and 280,000 men from Benjamin, armed with shields and bows. All of them were brave, well-trained men.

9 An Ethiopian named Zerah invaded Judah with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots and advanced as far as Mareshah.

10 Asa went out to fight him, and both sides took up their positions at Zephathah Valley near Mareshah.

11 Asa prayed to the Lord his God, "O Lord, you can help a weak army as easily as a powerful one. Help us now, O Lord our God, because we are relying on you, and in your name we have come out to fight against this huge army. Lord, you are our God; no one can hope to defeat you."

12 The Lord defeated the Ethiopian army when Asa and the Judean army attacked them. They fled,

13 and Asa and his troops pursued them as far as Gerar. So many of the Ethiopians were killed that the army was unable to rally and fight. They were overpowered by the Lord and his army, and the army took large amounts of loot.

14 Then they were able to destroy the cities in the area around Gerar, because the people there were terrified of the Lord. The army plundered all those cities and captured large amounts of loot.

15 They also attacked the camps of some shepherds, capturing large numbers of sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
