1 ALLORA lo Spirito di Dio fu sopra Azaria, figliuolo di Oded;

The spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded,
2 ed egli uscì incontro ad Asa, e gli disse: Ascoltatemi, Asa, e tutto Giuda, e Beniamino; il Signore è stato con voi, mentre voi siete stati con lui; e se voi, lo ricercate, voi lo troverete; ma, se voi l’abbandonate, egli vi abbandonerà.

and he went to meet King Asa. He called out, "Listen to me, King Asa, and all you people of Judah and Benjamin! The Lord is with you as long as you are with him. If you look for him, he will let you find him, but if you turn away, he will abandon you.
3 Or Israele è stato un lungo tempo senza il vero Dio, e senza sacerdote che insegnasse, e senza Legge.

For a long time Israel lived without the true God, without priests to teach them, and without a law.
4 Ma quando, essendo distretto, egli si è convertito al Signore Iddio d’Israele, e l’ha ricercato, egli l’ha trovato.

But when trouble came, they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel. They searched for him and found him.
5 Or in que’ tempi non vi era pace alcuna per coloro che andavano e che venivano; perciocchè turbamenti erano fra tutti gli abitanti dei paesi.

In those days no one could come and go in safety, because there was trouble and disorder in every land.
6 Ed una nazione era conquisa dall’altra nazione, ed una città dall’altra città; perciocchè Iddio li dibatteva con ogni sorte di tribolazioni.

One nation oppressed another nation, and one city oppressed another city, because God was bringing trouble and distress on them.
7 Ma voi, confortatevi, e le vostre mani non diventino rimesse; perciocchè vi è premio per l’opera vostra.

But you must be strong and not be discouraged. The work that you do will be rewarded."
8 E, quando Asa ebbe udite queste parole, e la profezia del profeta Oded, egli si fortificò, e tolse via le abbominazioni da tutto il paese di Giuda, e di Beniamino, e dalle città ch’egli avea prese del monte di Efraim; e rinnovò l’Altar del Signore, ch’era davanti al portico del Signore.

When Asa heard the prophecy that Azariah son of Oded had spoken, he was encouraged. He did away with all the idols in the land of Judah and Benjamin and all the idols in the cities he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. He also repaired the altar of the Lord that stood in the Temple courtyard.
9 Poi raunò tutto Giuda, e Beniamino, e que’ di Efraim, e di Manasse, e di Simeone, che dimoravano con loro; perciocchè molti si erano rivolti da parte sua, veggendo che il Signore Iddio suo era con lui.

Many people had come over to Asa's side from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon, and were living in his kingdom, because they had seen that the Lord was with him. Asa summoned all of them and the people of Judah and Benjamin.
10 Essi adunque si raunarono in Gerusalemme, nel terzo mese dell’anno quintodecimo del regno di Asa.

They assembled in Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year that Asa was king.
11 Ed in quel dì sacrificarono al Signore, della preda che aveano menata, settecento buoi, e settemila pecore.

On that day they offered sacrifices to the Lord from the loot they had brought back: seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep.
12 E convennero in questo patto di ricercare il Signore Iddio de’ lor padri, con tutto il cuor loro, e con tutta l’anima loro;

They made a covenant in which they agreed to worship the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul.
13 e che chiunque non ricercherebbe il Signore Iddio d’Israele, fosse fatto morire, piccolo o grande che egli fosse, uomo o donna;

Anyone, young or old, male or female, who did not worship him was to be put to death.
14 e giurarono al Signore con gran voce e grida di allegrezza, con trombe e corni.

In a loud voice they took an oath in the Lord's name that they would keep the covenant, and then they shouted and blew trumpets.
15 E tutto Giuda si rallegrò di quel giuramento; perciocchè giurarono con tutto il cuor loro, e cercarono il Signore con tutta la loro affezione, e lo trovarono; e il Signore diede loro riposo d’ogn’intorno.

All the people of Judah were happy because they had made this covenant with all their heart. They took delight in worshiping the Lord, and he accepted them and gave them peace on every side.
16 Il re Asa rimosse ancora Maaca, sua madre, dal governo; perciocchè ella avea fatto un idolo per un bosco; ed Asa spezzò l’idolo di essa, e lo tritò, e l’arse nella valle di Chidron.

King Asa removed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made an obscene idol of the fertility goddess Asherah. Asa cut down the idol, chopped it up, and burned the pieces in Kidron Valley.
17 Tuttavolta gli alti luoghi non furono tolti via d’Israele; ma pure il cuor di Asa fu intiero tutto il tempo della sua vita.

Even though Asa did not destroy all the pagan places of worship in the land, he remained faithful to the Lord all his life.
18 Ed egli portò nella Casa di Dio le cose che suo padre avea consacrate, e quelle ancora ch’egli stesso avea consacrate; argento, ed oro, e vasellamenti.

He placed in the Temple all the objects his father Abijah had dedicated to God, as well as the gold and silver objects that he himself dedicated.
19 E non vi fu guerra alcuna fino all’anno trentacinquesimo del regno di Asa.

There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of his reign.
