1 OR Salomone, avendo deliberato di edificare una Casa al Nome del Signore, e la sua casa reale,

2 annoverò settantamila uomini da portar pesi, e ottantamila da tagliar pietre nel monte, e tremila siecento commissari sopra essi.

3 Poi mandò a dire ad Huram, re di Tiro: Fa’ inverso me come tu facesti inverso Davide, mio padre, al quale tu mandasti cedri, per edificarsi una casa per abitarvi.

4 Ecco, io edifico una Casa al nome del Signore Iddio mio, per consacrargliela, per far profumi di aromati davanti a lui, e per presentargli i pani che hanno da esser del continuo disposti per ordine, e per offerirgli olocausti della mattina e della sera, e de’ sabati, e delle calendi, e delle feste solenni del Signore Iddio nostro, come ciò è imposto in perpetuo ad Israele.

5 Or la Casa, ch’io edifico è grande; perciocchè l’Iddio nostro è grande più che tutti gl’Iddii.

6 E chi avrebbe il potere di edificargli una Casa? conciossiachè i cieli, e i cieli de’ cieli, non lo possano comprendere? e chi son io, che io gli edifichi una Casa, se non che sia per far profumi davanti a lui?

7 Ora dunque, mandami un uomo intendente in lavorare in oro, e in argento, e in rame, e in ferro, e in porpora, e in iscarlatto, e in violato; e che sappia lavorar d’intagli; acciocchè sia con gli uomini industriosi che io ho appresso di me in Giuda, ed in Gerusalemme, i quali Davide, mio padre, avea ordinati.

8 Mandami ancora dal Libano del legname di cedro, di abete, e di algummim, perciocchè io so che i tuoi servitori sanno tagliar il legname del Libano; ed ecco, i miei servitori saranno co’ tuoi;

9 acciocchè mi apparecchino legname in gran quantità; perciocchè la Casa, che io son per edificare, ha da esser maravigliosamente grande.

10 Ed ecco, io darò a’ tuoi servitori, che taglieranno le legne, ventimila cori di grano battuto, e ventimila cori d’orzo, e ventimila bati di vino, e ventimila bati d’olio.

11 Ed Huram, re di Tiro, rispose per lettere a Salomone, e gli mandò a dire: Perciocchè il Signore ama il suo popolo, egli ti ha costituito re sopra lui.

12 Huram gli mandò ancora a dire: Benedetto sia il Signore Iddio d’Israele, il quale ha fatto il cielo e la terra, perchè ha dato al re Davide un figliuolo savio, prudente, e intendente, che ha da edificare una Casa al Signore, ed una casa reale per sè.

13 Ora dunque, io ti mando un uomo industrioso e intendente, il quale è stato di Huram, mio padre;

14 il quale è figliuolo d’una donna delle figliuole di Dan, ma suo padre era Tirio; che sa lavorare in oro ed in argento, in rame, in ferro, in pietre, ed in legname, ed in porpora, in violato, in bisso, ed in iscarlatto; e fare qualunque sorte d’intaglio, e di disegno di qualunque cosa gli sia proposta; acciocchè sia co’ tuoi maestri, e con quei di Davide, tuo padre, mio signore.

15 Ora dunque, mandi il mio signore a’ suoi servitori il grano, e l’orzo, e l’olio, e il vino, ch’egli ha detto.

16 E noi taglieremo dal Libano del legname quanto avrai bisogno, e te lo condurremo per foderi in sul mare, fino a Iafo; e di là tu lo farai trasportare in Gerusalemme.

17 E Salomone fece la rassegna di tutti gli uomini forestieri ch’erano nel paese d’Israele, dopo la descrizione che Davide, suo padre, ne avea fatta; e se ne trovò cencinquantatremila seicento;

18 dei quali egli ordinò settantamila da portar pesi, ed ottantamila da tagliar pietre nel monte; e tremila seicento per esser commissari da far sollecitamente lavorar la gente.

Good News Translation GNT

1 King Solomon decided to build a temple where the Lord would be worshiped, and also to build a palace for himself.

2 He put 70,000 men to work transporting materials, and 80,000 to work cutting stone in the hill country. There were 3,600 others responsible for supervising the work.

3 Solomon sent a message to King Hiram of Tyre: "Do business with me as you did with my father, King David, when you sold him cedar logs for building his palace.

4 I am building a temple to honor the Lord my God. It will be a holy place where my people and I will worship him by burning incense of fragrant spices, where we will present offerings of sacred bread to him continuously, and where we will offer burnt offerings every morning and evening, as well as on Sabbaths, New Moon Festivals, and other holy days honoring the Lord our God. He has commanded Israel to do this forever.

5 I intend to build a great temple, because our God is greater than any other god.

6 Yet no one can really build a temple for God, because even all the vastness of heaven cannot contain him. How then can I build a temple that would be anything more than a place to burn incense to God?

7 Now send me a man with skill in engraving, in working gold, silver, bronze, and iron, and in making blue, purple, and red cloth. He will work with the craftsmen of Judah and Jerusalem whom my father David selected.

8 I know how skillful your lumbermen are, so send me cedar, cypress, and juniper logs from Lebanon. I am ready to send my men to assist yours

9 in preparing large quantities of timber, because this temple I intend to build will be large and magnificent.

10 As provisions for your lumbermen, I will send you 100,000 bushels of wheat, 100,000 bushels of barley, 110,000 gallons of wine, and 110,000 gallons of olive oil."

11 King Hiram sent Solomon a letter in reply. He wrote, "Because the Lord loves his people, he has made you their king.

12 Praise the Lord God of Israel, Creator of heaven and earth! He has given King David a wise son, full of understanding and skill, who now plans to build a temple for the Lord and a palace for himself.

13 I am sending you a wise and skillful master metalworker named Huram.

14 His mother was a member of the tribe of Dan and his father was a native of Tyre. He knows how to make things out of gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood. He can work with blue, purple, and red cloth, and with linen. He can do all sorts of engraving and can follow any design suggested to him. Let him work with your skilled workers and with those who worked for your father, King David.

15 So now send us the wheat, barley, wine, and olive oil that you promised.

16 In the mountains of Lebanon we will cut down all the cedars you need, tie them together in rafts, and float them by sea as far as Joppa. From there you can take them to Jerusalem."

17 King Solomon took a census of all the foreigners living in the land of Israel, similar to the census his father David had taken. There were 153,600 resident foreigners.

18 He assigned 70,000 of them to transport materials and 80,000 to cut stones in the mountains, and appointed 3,600 supervisors to make sure the work was done.
