1 ORA, dopo queste cose, avvenne che figliuoli di Moab, e i figliuoli di Ammon, e con loro altri d’infra gli Ammoniti, vennero per far guerra contro a Giosafat.

2 E vennero de’ messi, che rapportarono la cosa a Giosafat, dicendo: Una gran moltitudine di gente di di là dal mare, e di Siria, viene contro a te; ed ecco, essi sono in Hasason-tamar, che è Enghedi.

3 Allora Giosafat ebbe paura, e si dispose a ricercare il Signore, e fece bandire il digiuno a tutto Giuda.

4 E que’ di Giuda si raunarono per ricercare aiuto dal Signore; molti eziandio da tutte le città di Giuda vennero per ricercare il Signore.

5 E Giosafat, stando in piè nella raunanza di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, si presentò nella Casa del Signore, davanti al cortile nuovo, e disse:

6 O Signore Iddio de’ nostri padri, non sei tu Dio nei cieli, e non signoreggi tu sopra tutti i regni delle nazioni? e non hai tu nella tua mano forza, e potenza, talchè niuno ti può contrastare?

7 Non hai tu, o Dio nostro, scacciati gli abitanti di questo paese d’innanzi al tuo popolo Israele? e non hai tu dato esso paese in perpetuo alla progenie d’Abrahamo, il quale ti amò?

8 Laonde essi vi sono abitati, e ti hanno in esso edificato un Santuario per lo tuo Nome, dicendo:

9 Quando ci sopraggiugnerà alcun male, spada di punizione, o pestilenza, o fame, e noi ci presenteremo davanti a questa Casa, e davanti al tuo cospetto consiossiachè il tuo Nome sia in questa Casa, e grideremo a te per la nostra tribolazione; esaudiscine, e salvaci.

10 Or al presente, ecco, i figliuoli di Ammon e di Moab, e que’ del monte di Seir, nel cui paese tu non permettesti ad Israele di entrare, quando veniva fuor del paese di Egitto; anzi se ne rivolse indietro, e non li distrusse;

11 ecco essi ce ne fanno la retribuzione, venendo per iscacciarci dalla tua eredità, la quale tu ci hai data a possedere.

12 O Dio nostro, non farai tu giudicio di loro? conciossiachè non vi sia forza alcuna in noi, per contrastare a questa gran moltitudine che viene contro a noi; e noi non sappiamo ciò che dobbiam fare; ma gli occhi nostri son volti a te.

13 E tutti que’ di Giuda stavano diritti davanti al Signore, insieme co’ lor piccoli fanciulli, con le lor mogli, e co’ lor figliuoli.

14 Allora lo Spirito del Signore fu sopra Iahaziel, figliuolo di Zaccaria, figliuolo di Benaia, figliuolo di Ieiel, figliuolo di Mattania Levita, d’infra i figliuoli di Asaf, nel mezzo della raunanza,

15 ed egli disse: Voi tutti uomini di Giuda, ed abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu re Giosafat, attendete: Così vi dice il Signore: Voi, non temiate, e non vi spaventate, per questa gran moltitudine; perciocchè questa guerra non appartiene a voi, anzi a Dio.

16 Domani andate contro a loro; ecco, essi montano per la salita di Sis, e voi li troverete all’estremità del torrente, dirincontro al deserto di Ieruel.

17 Voi non avrete a combattere in questo fatto; presentatevi pure, e state fermi; e voi vedrete ciò che il Signore farà inverso voi per vostra salvazione; o Giuda, e Gerusalemme, non temiate, e non vi spaventate; domani uscite incontro a loro, e il Signore sarà con voi.

18 Allora Giosafat s’inchinò con la faccia verso terra; e tutto Giuda, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, si gittarono giù davanti al Signore, per adorarlo.

19 Ed i Leviti, d’infra i Chehatiti, e i Coriti, si levarono per lodare il Signore Iddio d’Israele ad altissima voce.

20 E la mattina seguente, il popolo si levò a buon’ora, ed uscì fuori verso il deserto di Tecoa; e, mentre usciva, Giosafat si fermò, e disse: Ascoltatemi, o Giuda, e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme; credete al Signore Iddio vostro, e voi sarete assicurati; credete a’ profeti di esso, e voi prospererete.

21 E, tenuto consiglio col popolo, costituì de’ cantori che cantassero al Signore, e lodassero la santa sua Maestà; e camminando dinanzi alla gente di guerra, dicessero: Celebrate il Signore; perciocchè la sua benignità è in eterno.

22 E nel medesimo tempo ch’essi cominciarono il canto di trionfo, e le laudi, il Signore pose agguati fra i figliuoli di Ammon, e i Moabiti, e que’ del monte di Seir, i quali venivano contro a Giuda, ed essi si percossero gli uni gli altri.

23 Ed i figliuoli di Ammon, e i Moabiti, si presentarono in battaglia contro agli abitanti del monte di Seir, per distruggerli, e per disperderli; e quando ebbero finito con gli abitanti di Seir, si aiutarono gli uni gli altri a disfarsi.

24 Ora, quando que’ di Giuda furono giunti fino a Mispa, che riguarda verso il deserto, si voltarono verso quella moltitudine; ed ecco, tutti erano corpi morti, che giacevano per terra, e non n’era scampato alcuno.

25 Allora Giosafat, e la sua gente, vennero per predar le loro spoglie; e fra i lor corpi morti trovarono molte ricchezze, e cari arredi; e ne predarono tante, che non bastavano a portarle; e stettero tre giorni a predar le spoglie; perciocchè erano in gran quantità.

26 Poi, al quarto giorno, si adunarono nella Valle, detta di Benedizione; perciocchè quivi benedissero il Signore; per questa cagione quel luogo è stato chiamato Valle di Benedizione infino a questo giorno.

27 E tutta la gente di Giuda, e di Gerusalemme, e Giosafat in capo di essi, si rimisero in cammino, per ritornarsene in Gerusalemme, con allegrezza; perciocchè il Signore avea loro data allegrezza de’ lor nemici.

28 E, giunti in Gerusalemme, entrarono con salteri, e con cetere, e con trombe, nella Casa del Signore.

29 E lo spavento di Dio fu sopra tutti i regni di que’ paesi, quando intesero che il Signore avea combattuto contro a’ nemici d’Israele.

30 E il regno di Giosafat ebbe quiete; e l’Iddio suo gli diè riposo d’ogn’intorno.

31 Così Giosafat regnò sopra Giuda. Egli era di età di trentacinque anni, quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò venticinque anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Azuba, figliuola di Silhi.

32 Ed egli camminò nella via di Asa, suo padre, e non se ne rivolse, facendo ciò che piace al Signore.

33 Nondimeno gli alti luoghi non furono tolti via; non avendo il popolo ancora addirizzato il cuore suo all’Iddio de’ suoi padri.

34 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Giosafat, primi ed ultimi, ecco, sono scritti nel libro di Iehu, figliuolo di Hanani, il quale è stato inserito nel libro dei re d’Israele.

35 Ora, dopo quelle cose, Giosafat, re di Giuda, fece compagnia con Achazia, re d’Israele, le cui opere erano empie.

36 E lo prese in sua compagnia, per far navi, per far viaggi in Tarsis; e fecero le navi in Esion-gheber.

37 Allora Eliezer, figliuolo di Dodava, da Maresa, profetizzò contro a Giosafat, dicendo: Conciossiachè tu abbi fatta compagnia con Achazia, il Signore ha dissipate le tue opere. E le navi furono rotte, e non poterono fare il viaggio in Tarsis.

1 Some time later the armies of Moab and Ammon, together with their allies, the Meunites, invaded Judah.

2 Some messengers came and announced to King Jehoshaphat: "A large army from Edom has come from the other side of the Dead Sea to attack you. They have already captured Hazazon Tamar." (This is another name for Engedi.)

3 Jehoshaphat was frightened and prayed to the Lord for guidance. Then he gave orders for a fast to be observed throughout the country.

4 From every city of Judah people hurried to Jerusalem to ask the Lord for guidance,

5 and they and the people of Jerusalem gathered in the new courtyard of the Temple. King Jehoshaphat went and stood before them

6 and prayed aloud, "O Lord God of our ancestors, you rule in heaven over all the nations of the world. You are powerful and mighty, and no one can oppose you.

7 You are our God. When your people Israel moved into this land, you drove out the people who were living here and gave the land to the descendants of Abraham, your friend, to be theirs forever.

8 They have lived here and have built a temple to honor you, knowing

9 that if any disaster struck them to punish them - a war, an epidemic, or a famine - then they could come and stand in front of this Temple where you are worshiped. They could pray to you in their trouble, and you would hear them and rescue them.

10 "Now the people of Ammon, Moab, and Edom have attacked us. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, you did not allow them to enter those lands, so our ancestors went around them and did not destroy them.

11 This is how they repay us - they come to drive us out of the land that you gave us.

12 You are our God! Punish them, for we are helpless in the face of this large army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but we look to you for help."

13 All the men of Judah, with their wives and children, were standing there at the Temple.

14 The spirit of the Lord came upon a Levite who was present in the crowd. His name was Jahaziel son of Zechariah; he was a member of the clan of Asaph and was descended from Asaph through Mattaniah, Jeiel, and Benaiah.

15 Jahaziel said, "Your Majesty and all you people of Judah and Jerusalem, the Lord says that you must not be discouraged or be afraid to face this large army. The battle depends on God, not on you.

16 Attack them tomorrow as they come up the pass at Ziz. You will meet them at the end of the valley that leads to the wild country near Jeruel.

17 You will not have to fight this battle. Just take up your positions and wait; you will see the Lord give you victory. People of Judah and Jerusalem, do not hesitate or be afraid. Go out to battle, and the Lord will be with you!"

18 Then King Jehoshaphat bowed low, with his face touching the ground, and all the people bowed with him and worshiped the Lord.

19 The members of the Levite clans of Kohath and Korah stood up and with a loud shout praised the Lord, the God of Israel.

20 Early the next morning the people went out to the wild country near Tekoa. As they were starting out, Jehoshaphat addressed them with these words: "People of Judah and Jerusalem! Put your trust in the Lord your God, and you will stand your ground. Believe what his prophets tell you, and you will succeed."

21 After consulting with the people, the king ordered some musicians to put on the robes they wore on sacred occasions and to march ahead of the army, singing: "Praise the Lord! His love is eternal!"

22 When they began to sing, the Lord threw the invading armies into a panic.

23 The Ammonites and the Moabites attacked the Edomite army and completely destroyed it, and then they turned on each other in savage fighting.

24 When the Judean army reached a tower that was in the desert, they looked toward the enemy and saw that they were all lying on the ground dead. Not one had escaped.

25 Jehoshaphat and his troops moved in to take the loot, and they found many cattle, supplies, clothing, and other valuable objects. They spent three days gathering the loot, but there was so much that they could not take everything.

26 On the fourth day they assembled in Beracah Valley and praised the Lord for all he had done. That is why the valley is called "Beracah."

27 Jehoshaphat led his troops back to Jerusalem in triumph, because the Lord had defeated their enemies.

28 When they reached the city, they marched to the Temple to the music of harps and trumpets.

29 Every nation that heard how the Lord had defeated Israel's enemies was terrified,

30 so Jehoshaphat ruled in peace, and God gave him security on every side.

31 Jehoshaphat had become king of Judah at the age of thirty-five and had ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-five years. His mother was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi.

32 Like his father Asa before him, he did what was right in the sight of the Lord;

33 but the pagan places of worship were not destroyed. The people still did not turn wholeheartedly to the worship of the God of their ancestors.

34 Everything else that Jehoshaphat did, from the beginning of his reign to its end, is recorded in [The History of Jehu Son of Hanani,] which is a part of [The History of the Kings of Israel.]

35 At one time King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, who did many wicked things.

36 At the port of Eziongeber they built ocean-going ships.

37 But Eliezer son of Dodavahu, from the town of Mareshah, warned Jehoshaphat, "Because you have made an alliance with Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy what you have built." And the ships were wrecked and never sailed.
