1 POI Giosafat giacque co’ suoi padri, e con essi fu seppellito nella Città di Davide; e Gioram, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

2 Or esso avea de’ fratelli, figliuoli di Giosafat, cioè: Azaria, e Iehiel, e Zaccaria, ed Azaria, e Micael, e Sefatia. Tutti costoro erano figliuoli di Giosafat, re di Israele.

3 E il padre loro avea loro fatti gran doni d’argento, e d’oro, e di robe preziose, con alcune città forti nel paese di Giuda; ma avea dato il regno a Gioram; perciocchè egli era il primogenito.

4 E Gioram, essendo salito al regno di suo padre, si fortificò, ed uccise con la spada tutti i suoi fratelli, ed anche alcuni de’ capi d’Israele.

5 Gioram era d’età di trentadue anni, quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò otto anni in Gerusalemme.

6 E camminò per la via dei re d’Israele, come faceva la casa di Achab; perciocchè egli avea per moglie la figliuola di Achab. Così fece quello che dispiace al Signore.

7 Nondimeno il Signore non volle distruggere la casa di Davide, per amor del patto ch’egli avea fatto con Davide; e secondo ch’egli avea detto, che darebbe a lui ed a’ suoi figliuoli, in perpetuo, una lampana accesa.

8 Al tempo di esso, gl’Idumei si ribellarono dall’ubbidienza di Giuda, e costituirono sopra loro un re.

9 Perciò Gioram passò in Idumea, co’ suoi capitani, e con tutti i suoi carri; ed avvenne che, essendosi egli mosso di notte, percosse gl’Idumei che l’aveano intorniato, ed i capitani de’ carri.

10 Nondimeno gl’Idumei sono perseverati nella lor ribellione dall’ubbidienza di Giuda infino a questo giorno. In quell’istesso tempo Libna si ribellò dall’ubbidienza di Gioram; perciocchè egli avea abbandonato il Signore Iddio de’ suoi padri.

11 Egli fece ancora degli alti luoghi nei monti di Giuda, e fece fornicar gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, e diede lo spianto a Giuda.

12 Allora gli venne uno scritto da parte del profeta Elia, di questo tenore: Così ha detto il Signore Iddio di Davide, tuo padre: Perciocchè tu non sei camminato per le vie di Giosafat, tuo padre, nè per le vie di Asa, re di Giuda;

13 anzi sei camminato per la via dei re di Israele, ed hai fatto fornicar Giuda, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, come la casa di Achab ha fatto fornicare Israele; ed oltre a ciò, hai uccisi i tuoi fratelli, la famiglia di tuo padre, i quali erano migliori di te;

14 ecco, il Signore percoterà di una gran piaga il tuo popolo, e i tuoi figliuoli, e le tue mogli, e tutti i tuoi beni.

15 E percoterà la tua persona di grandi infermità, d’infermità d’interiora, talchè le tue interiora usciranno fuori per l’infermità che durerà un anno dopo l’altro.

16 Il Signore adunque eccitò contro a Gioram lo spirito de’ Filistei, e degli Arabi, che son presso agli Etiopi.

17 Ed essi salirono contro a Guida, ed essendo entrati dentro a forza, predarono tutte le ricchezze che furono ritrovate nella casa del re; ed anche ne menarono prigioni i suoi figliuoli, e le sue mogli, talchè non gli restò alcun figliuolo, se non Gioachaz, il più piccolo de’ suoi figliuoli.

18 E dopo tutte queste cose, il Signore lo percosse d’una infermità incurabile nelle interiora.

19 Ed avvenne che, passato un anno dopo l’altro, al tempo che il termine de’ due anni spirava, le interiora gli uscirono fuori, insieme con l’infermità; ed egli morì in gravi dolori; e il suo popolo non arse per lui alcuni aromati, come avea fatto per li suoi padri.

20 Egli era d’età di trentadue anni, quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò otto anni in Gerusalemme, e se ne andò senza esser desiderato; e fu seppellito nella Città di Davide, ma non già nelle sepolture dei re.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Jehoshaphat died and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City and his son Jehoram succeeded him as king.

2 Jehoram son of King Jehoshaphat of Judah had six brothers: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah.

3 Their father gave them large amounts of gold, silver, and other valuable possessions, and placed each one in charge of one of the fortified cities of Judah. But because Jehoram was the oldest, Jehoshaphat made him his successor.

4 When Jehoram was in firm control of the kingdom, he had all his brothers killed, and also some Israelite officials.

5 Jehoram became king at the age of thirty-two, and he ruled in Jerusalem for eight years.

6 He followed the wicked example of King Ahab and the other kings of Israel, because he had married one of Ahab's daughters. He sinned against the Lord,

7 but the Lord was not willing to destroy the dynasty of David, because he had made a covenant with David and promised that his descendants would always continue to rule.

8 During Jehoram's reign Edom revolted against Judah and became an independent kingdom.

9 So Jehoram and his officers set out with chariots and invaded Edom. There the Edomite army surrounded them, but during the night they managed to break out and escape.

10 Edom has been independent of Judah ever since. During this same period the city of Libnah also revolted, because Jehoram had abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors.

11 He even built pagan places of worship in the Judean highlands and led the people of Judah and Jerusalem to sin against the Lord.

12 The prophet Elijah sent Jehoram a letter, which read as follows: "The Lord, the God of your ancestor David, condemns you, because you did not follow the example of your father, King Jehoshaphat, or that of your grandfather, King Asa.

13 Instead, you have followed the example of the kings of Israel and have led the people of Judah and Jerusalem into being unfaithful to God, just as Ahab and his successors led Israel into unfaithfulness. You even murdered your brothers, who were better men than you are.

14 As a result, the Lord will severely punish your people, your children, and your wives, and will destroy your possessions.

15 You yourself will suffer a painful intestinal disease that will grow worse day by day."

16 Some Philistines and Arabs lived near where some Ethiopians had settled along the coast. The Lord caused them to go to war against Jehoram.

17 They invaded Judah, looted the royal palace, and carried off as prisoners all the king's wives and sons except Ahaziah, his youngest son.

18 Then after all this, the Lord brought on the king a painful disease of the intestines.

19 For almost two years it grew steadily worse until finally the king died in agony. His subjects did not light a bonfire in mourning for him as had been done for his ancestors.

20 Jehoram had become king at the age of thirty-two and had ruled in Jerusalem for eight years. Nobody was sorry when he died. They buried him in David's City, but not in the royal tombs.
