2 Cronache 25

1 AMASIA, essendo d’età di venticinque anni, cominciò a regnare, e regnò ventinove anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Ioaddan, da Gerusalemme.

2 Ed egli fece ciò che piace al Signore, non però di cuore intiero.

3 Ora, come egli fu ben fermo nel regno, egli uccise i suoi servitori che aveano percosso il re, suo padre.

4 Ma non fece morire i lor figliuoli; anzi fece come è scritto nella Legge, nel libro di Mosè, nel quale il Signore ha comandato che i padri non muoiano per li figliuoli, nè i figliuoli per li padri; anzi, che ciascuno muoia per lo suo proprio peccato.

5 Poi Amasia adunò que’ di Giuda; e di quelli costituì, secondo le lor famiglie paterne, capi di migliaia, e capi di centinaia, per tutto Giuda e Beniamino; e li annoverò dall’età di vent’anni in su: e trovò ch’erano trecentomila uomini di guerra scelti, che portavano lancia e scudo.

6 Soldò, oltre a ciò, d’Israele centomila uomini di valore, con cento talenti d’argento.

7 Ma un uomo di Dio venne a lui, dicendo: O re, l’esercito d’Israele non vada teco; perciocchè il Signore non è con Israele, nè con tutti i figliuoli di Efraim.

8 Altrimenti, va’ pure, e portati valorosamente nella battaglia; Iddio ti farà cadere davanti al nemico; perciocchè Iddio ha il potere di soccorrere, e di far cadere.

9 Ed Amasia disse all’uomo di Dio: E che deve farsi de’ cento talenti che io ho dati alle schiere d’Israele? E l’uomo di Dio disse: Egli è nel potere del Signore di darti molto più di questo.

10 Amasia dunque separò le schiere ch’erano venute a lui di Efraim, acciocchè se ne andassero al luogo loro; laonde si adirarono gravemente contro a Giuda, e se ne ritornarono alle loro stanze, accesi nell’ira.

11 Ed Amasia si fortificò, e condusse la sua gente; e andò alla valle del sale, e percosse i figliuoli di Seir, in numero di diecimila.

12 I figliuoli di Giuda presero eziandio prigioni diecimila uomini vivi, e li menarono in cima di Sela, e li gittarono a basso dalla rupe; e tutti creparono.

13 Ma le schiere che Amasia avea rimandate, acciocchè non andassero con lui alla guerra, scorsero sopra le città di Giuda, da Samaria, fino in Bet-horon; e percossero tremila uomini di quella, e fecero una gran preda.

14 Ed Amasia, ritornando dalla sconfitta degl’Idumei, portò gl’iddii de’ figliuoli di Seir, e se li rizzò per dii, e li adorò, e fece loro profumi.

15 Laonde l’ira del Signore si accese contro ad Amasia; ed egli gli mandò un profeta a dirgli: Perchè hai tu ricercati gl’iddii di un popolo, i quali non hanno salvato il lor proprio popolo dalla tua mano?

16 Ma mentre colui parlava al re, egli gli disse: Sei tu stato dato al re per consigliere? resta; perchè saresti ucciso? Il profeta dunque restò; ma pur disse: Io so che il consiglio di Dio è di perderti, perchè tu hai fatto questo, e non hai ubbidito al mio consiglio.

17 Or Amasia, re di Giuda, prese consiglio, e mandò a dire a Gioas, figliuolo di Gioachaz, figliuolo di Iehu re d’Israele: Vieni, veggiamoci l’un l’altro in faccia.

18 E Gioas, re d’Israele, mandò a dire ad Amasia, re di Giuda: Uno spino del Libano mandò già a dire al cedro del Libano: Da’ la tua figliuola per moglie al mio figliuolo; ma le fiere del Libano, passando, calpestarono lo spino.

19 Tu hai detto: Ecco, io ho percossi gl’Idumei; e però il tuo cuore ti ha innalzato per glorificarti; rimantene ora in casa tua; perchè ti rimescoleresti in un male, per lo quale caderesti tu e Giuda teco?

20 Ma Amasia non gli diè d’orecchio; perciocchè quella cosa procedeva da Dio, per dar que’ di Giuda in mano de’ lor nemici; perciocchè aveano ricercati gl’iddii di Edom.

21 Gioas adunque, re d’Israele, salì; ed egli, ed Amasia, re di Giuda, si videro l’un l’altro in faccia, in Bet-semes, città di Giuda.

22 E Giuda fu sconfitto da Israele; e ciascuno fuggì alle sue stanze.

23 E Gioas, re d’Israele, prese prigione Amasia, re di Giuda, figliuolo di Gioas, figliuolo di Gioachaz, in Bet-semes, e lo menò in Gerusalemme; e fece una rottura nel muro di Gerusalemme, dalla porta di Efraim fino alla porta del cantone lo spazio di quattrocento cubiti.

24 E prese tutto l’oro e l’argento, e tutti i vasellamenti che si trovarono nelle Casa di Dio, appo Obed-Edom, e ne’ tesori della Casa del re; prese eziandio stadichi; poi se ne ritornò in Samaria.

25 Ed Amasia, figliuolo di Gioas, re di Giuda, visse quindici anni dopo la morte di Gioas, figliuolo di Gioachaz, re d’Israele.

26 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Amasia, primi ed ultimi; ecco, non sono essi scritti nel libro dei re di Giuda e d’Israele?

27 Ora, dal tempo che Amasia si fu rivolto dal Signore, alcuni fecero una congiura contro a lui in Gerusalemme, ed egli se ne fuggì in Lachis; ma essi mandarono dietro a lui in Lachis, e quivi lo fecero morire.

28 E di là fu portato sopra cavalli, e fu seppellito nella città di Giuda co’ suoi padri.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Amaziah became king at the age of twenty-five, and he ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. His mother was Jehoaddin from Jerusalem.

2 He did what was pleasing to the Lord, but did it reluctantly.

3 As soon as he was firmly in power, he executed the officials who had murdered his father.

4 He did not, however, execute their children, but followed what the Lord had commanded in the Law of Moses: "Parents are not to be put to death for crimes committed by their children, and children are not to be put to death for crimes committed by their parents; people are to be put to death only for crimes they themselves have committed."

5 King Amaziah organized all the men of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin into army units, according to the clans they belonged to, and placed officers in command of units of a thousand and units of a hundred. This included all men twenty years of age or older, 300,000 in all. They were picked troops, ready for battle, skilled in using spears and shields.

6 In addition, he hired 100,000 soldiers from Israel at a cost of about four tons of silver.

7 But a prophet went to the king and said to him, "Don't take these Israelite soldiers with you. The Lord is not with these people from the Northern Kingdom.

8 You may think that they will make you stronger in battle, but it is God who has the power to give victory or defeat, and he will let your enemies defeat you."

9 Amaziah asked the prophet, "But what about all that silver I have already paid for them?" The prophet replied, "The Lord can give you back more than that!"

10 So Amaziah sent the hired troops away and told them to go home. At this they went home, bitterly angry with the people of Judah.

11 Amaziah summoned up his courage and led his army to Salt Valley. There they fought and killed ten thousand Edomite soldiers

12 and captured another ten thousand. They took the prisoners to the top of the cliff at the city of Sela and threw them off, so that they were killed on the rocks below.

13 Meanwhile the Israelite soldiers that Amaziah had not allowed to go into battle with him attacked the Judean cities between Samaria and Beth Horon, killed three thousand men, and captured quantities of loot.

14 When Amaziah returned from defeating the Edomites, he brought their idols back with him, set them up, worshiped them, and burned incense to them.

15 This made the Lord angry, so he sent a prophet to Amaziah. The prophet demanded, "Why have you worshiped foreign gods that could not even save their own people from your power?"

16 "Since when," Amaziah interrupted, "have we made you adviser to the king? Stop talking, or I'll have you killed!" The prophet stopped, but not before saying, "Now I know that God has decided to destroy you because you have done all this and have ignored my advice."

17 King Amaziah of Judah and his advisers plotted against Israel. He then sent a message to King Jehoash of Israel, who was the son of Jehoahaz and grandson of Jehu, challenging him to fight.

18 Jehoash sent this answer to Amaziah: "Once a thorn bush in the Lebanon Mountains sent a message to a cedar: "Give your daughter in marriage to my son.' A wild animal passed by and trampled the bush down.

19 Now Amaziah, you boast that you have defeated the Edomites, but I advise you to stay at home. Why stir up trouble that will only bring disaster on you and your people?"

20 But Amaziah refused to listen. It was God's will for Amaziah to be defeated, because he had worshiped the Edomite idols.

21 So King Jehoash of Israel went into battle against King Amaziah of Judah. They met at Beth Shemesh in Judah,

22 the Judean army was defeated, and the soldiers fled to their homes.

23 Jehoash captured Amaziah and took him to Jerusalem. There he tore down the city wall from Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of two hundred yards.

24 He took back to Samaria as loot all the gold and silver in the Temple, the Temple equipment guarded by the descendants of Obed Edom, and the palace treasures. He also took hostages with him.

25 King Amaziah of Judah outlived King Jehoash of Israel by fifteen years.

26 All the other things that Amaziah did from the beginning to the end of his reign are recorded in [The History of the Kings of Judah and Israel.]

27 Ever since the time when he rebelled against the Lord, there had been a plot against him in Jerusalem. Finally he fled to the city of Lachish, but his enemies followed him there and killed him.

28 His body was carried to Jerusalem on a horse, and he was buried in the royal tombs in David's City.
