1 ALLORA tutto il popolo di Giuda prese Uzzia, il quale era d’età di sedici anni, e lo costituì re, in luogo di Amasia, suo padre.

All the people of Judah chose Amaziah's sixteen-year-old son Uzziah to succeed his father as king
2 Egli edificò Elot, e la racquistò a Giuda dopo che il re fu giaciuto co’ suoi padri.

(It was after the death of Amaziah that Uzziah recaptured Elath and rebuilt the city.)
3 Uzzia era d’età di sedici anni quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò cinquantadue anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Iecolia, da Gerusalemme.

Uzziah became king at the age of sixteen, and he ruled in Jerusalem for fifty-two years. His mother was Jecoliah from Jerusalem.
4 Ed egli fece ciò che piace al Signore; interamente come avea fatto Amasia, suo padre.

Following the example of his father, he did what was pleasing to the Lord.
5 E si diede a ricercare Iddio, mentre visse Zaccaria, uomo intendente nelle visioni di Dio; e mentre egli ricercò il Signore, Iddio lo fece prosperare.

As long as Zechariah, his religious adviser, was living, he served the Lord faithfully, and God blessed him.
6 Ed egli uscì, e fece guerra co’ Filistei, e fece delle rotture nelle mura di Gat, e nelle mura di Iabne, e nelle mura di Asdod; ed edificò delle città nel paese di Asdod, e degli altri Filistei.

Uzziah went to war against the Philistines. He tore down the walls of the cities of Gath, Jamnia, and Ashdod, and built fortified cities near Ashdod and in the rest of Philistia.
7 E Iddio gli diede aiuto contro a’ Filistei, e contro agli Arabi che abitavano in Gurbaal, e contro a’ Maoniti.

God helped him defeat the Philistines, the Arabs living at Gurbaal, and the Meunites.
8 Gli Ammoniti eziandio davano presenti ad Uzzia; e il suo nome andò fino in Egitto; perciocchè egli si fece sommamente potente.

The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and he became so powerful that his fame spread even to Egypt.
9 Uzzia edificò ancora delle torri in Gerusaelemme, alla porta del cantone, e alla porta della valle, ed al cantone; e le fortificò.

Uzziah strengthened the fortifications of Jerusalem by building towers at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate, and where the wall turned.
10 Edificò ancora delle torri nel deserto e vi cavò molti pozzi; perciocchè egli avea gran quantitià di bestiame, come anche nella campagna, e nella pianura; avea eziandio de’ lavoratori, e dei vignaiuoli ne’ monti, ed in Carmel; perciocchè egli amava l’agricoltura.

He also built fortified towers in the open country and dug many cisterns, because he had large herds of livestock in the western foothills and plains. Because he loved farming, he encouraged the people to plant vineyards in the hill country and to farm the fertile land.
11 Ed Uzzia avea un esercito di gente di guerra, che andava alla guerra per ischiere, secondo il numero della lor rassegna, fatta per mano di Ieiel segretario, e di Maaseia commessario, sotto la condotta di Hanania, l’uno de’ capitani del re.

He had a large army ready for battle. Its records were kept by his secretaries Jeiel and Maaseiah under the supervision of Hananiah, a member of the king's staff.
12 Tutto il numero de’ capi della gente di valore, distinta per famiglie paterne, era di duemila seicento.

The army was commanded by 2,600 officers.
13 Ed essi aveano sotto la lor condotta un esercito di trecensettemila cinquecento prodi e valorosi guerrieri, per soccorrere il re contro al nemico.

Under them were 307,500 soldiers able to fight effectively for the king against his enemies.
14 Ed Uzzia preparò a tutto quell’esercito scudi, e lance, ed elmi, e corazze, ed archi, e frombole a trar pietre.

Uzziah supplied the army with shields, spears, helmets, coats of armor, bows and arrows, and stones for slinging.
15 Fece, oltre a ciò, in Gerusalemme degl’ingegni d’arte d’ingegnere, per metterli sopra le torri, e sopra i canti, per trar saette e pietre grosse. E la sua fama andò lungi perciocchè egli fu maravigliosamente soccorso, finchè fu fortificato.

In Jerusalem his inventors made equipment for shooting arrows and for throwing large stones from the towers and corners of the city wall. His fame spread everywhere, and he became very powerful because of the help he received from God.
16 Ma quando egli fu fortificato, il cuor suo s’innalzò, fino a corrompersi; e commise misfatto contro al Signore Iddio suo, ed entrò nel Tempio del Signore, per far profumo sopra l’altar de’ profumi.

But when King Uzziah became strong, he grew arrogant, and that led to his downfall. He defied the Lord his God by going into the Temple to burn incense on the altar of incense.
17 Ma il sacerdote Azaria entrò dietro a lui, avendo seco ottanta sacerdoti del Signore, uomini valenti;

Azariah the priest, accompanied by eighty strong and courageous priests, followed the king
18 ed essi si opposero al re Uzzia, e gli dissero: Non istà a te, o Uzzia, il far profumo al Signore; anzi a’ sacerdoti, figliuoli di Aaronne, che son consacrati per far profumi; esci fuori del Santuario; perciocchè tu hai misfatto, e ciò non ti tornerà in gloria da parte del Signore Iddio.

to resist him. They said, "Uzziah! You have no right to burn incense to the Lord. Only the priests who are descended from Aaron have been consecrated to do this. Leave this holy place. You have offended the Lord God, and you no longer have his blessing."
19 Allora Uzzia si adirò, avendo in mano il profumo da incensare; ma mentre si adirava contro a’ sacerdoti, la lebbra gli nacque in su la fronte in presenza dei sacerdoti nella Casa del Signore, d’in su l’altar de’ profumi.

Uzziah was standing there in the Temple beside the incense altar and was holding an incense burner. He became angry with the priests, and immediately a dreaded skin disease broke out on his forehead.
20 E il sommo sacerdote Azaria, e tutti i sacerdoti lo riguardarono, ed ecco, egli era lebbroso nella fronte; ed essi lo fecero prestamente uscir di là; ed egli ancora si gittò fuori per uscire; perciocchè il Signore l’avea percosso.

Azariah and the other priests stared at the king's forehead in horror and then forced him to leave the Temple. He hurried to get out, because the Lord had punished him.
21 E il re Uzzia fu lebbroso fino al giorno della sua morte, ed abitò così lebbroso in una casa in disparte; perciocchè fu separato della Casa del Signore; e Iotam, suo figliuolo, era mastro del palazzo reale, e rendeva ragione al popolo del paese.

For the rest of his life King Uzziah was ritually unclean because of his disease. Unable to enter the Temple again, he lived in his own house, relieved of all duties, while his son Jotham governed the country.
22 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Uzzia, primi ed ultimi, il profeta Isaia, figliuolo di Amos, li ha descritti.

The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz recorded all the other things that King Uzziah did during his reign.
23 Ed Uzzia giacque co’ suoi padri e fu seppellito co’ suoi padri nel campo delle sepolture dei re; perciocchè fu detto: Egli è lebbroso. E Iotam, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

Uzziah died and was buried in the royal burial ground, but because of his disease he was not buried in the royal tombs. His son Jotham succeeded him as king.
