2 Cronache 32

1 DOPO queste cose, e questa fedeltà, Sennacherib, re degli Assiri, venne, ed entrò in Giuda, e pose campo sopra le città forti, e deliberò di sforzarle, per ridurle sotto la sua ubbidienza.

2 Ed Ezechia, veduto che Sennacherib era venuto, e ch’egli volgeva la faccia contro a Gerusalemme, per combatterla;

3 si consigliò co’ suoi principali ufficiali, e co’ suoi uomini di valore, di turar le acque delle fonti ch’erano fuor della città; ed essi gli prestarono aiuto.

4 Ed un gran popolo si adunò, e turarono tutte le fonti, e il torrente che si spande per mezzo la contrada, dicendo: Perchè i re degli Assiri, venendo, troverebbero essi copia d’acque?

5 Egli prese eziandio animo di ristorar tutte le mura rotte, e le alzò fino alle torri; e di fuori edificò un altro muro. Egli fortificò ancora Millo, nella Città di Davide; e fece far dardi e scudi in gran quantità.

6 Ed ordinò capitani di guerra sopra il popolo, e li adunò appresso di sè nella piazza della porta della città, e li confortò, dicendo:

7 Prendete animo, e fortificatevi; non temiate, e non vi spaventate per lo re degli Assiri, nè per tutta la moltitudine che è con lui; perciocchè con noi v’è uno maggiore che con lui.

8 Con lui è il braccio della carne; ma con noi è il Signore Iddio nostro, per aiutarci, e per combatter le nostre battaglie. E il popolo si rassicurò in su le parole di Ezechia, re di Giuda.

9 Dopo questo, Sennacherib, re degli Assiri, essendo sopra Lachis con tutte le forze del suo imperio, mandò i suoi servitori in Gerusalemme ad Ezechia, re di Giuda, ed a tutti i Giudei ch’erano in Gerusalemme per dir loro:

10 Così ha detto Sennacherib, re degli Assiri: In che vi confidate voi, per dimorare in Gerusalemme nell’assedio?

11 Ezechia non vi seduce egli, per ridurvi a morir di fame e di sete, dicendo: Il Signore Iddio nostro ci salverà dalla mano del re degli Assiri?

12 Non ha esso Ezechia tolti via gli alti luoghi, e gli altari di esso Signore, e detto a Giuda e a Gerusalemme: Adorate solo davanti ad un Altare, e fate sopra esso ardere i vostri sacrificii?

13 Non sapete voi quello che io ed i miei padri abbiam fatto a tutti i popoli de’ paesi? gl’iddii delle genti dei paesi hanno eglino giammai potuto salvare il lor paese dalla mia mano?

14 Quale, d’infra tutti gl’iddii di quelle genti che i miei padri hanno distrutte, ha potuto salvare il suo popolo dalla mia mano, che l’Iddio vostro ve ne possa salvare?

15 Ora dunque Ezechia non v’inganni, e non vi seduca in questa maniera; e voi non gli prestate fede; perciocchè poichè alcun dio d’alcuna gente, o regno, non ha potuto salvare il suo popolo dalla mia mano, nè dalla mano de’ miei padri, quanto meno vi salverà l’Iddio vostro dalla mia mano?

16 Ed i servitori di esso dissero ancora molte altre cose contro al Signore Iddio, e contro ad Ezechia, suo servitore.

17 Sennacherib scrisse oltre a ciò lettere, per ischernire il Signore Iddio di Israele, e per parlar contro a lui in questa maniera: Siccome gl’iddii delle genti de’ paesi non hanno salvati i lor popoli dalla mia mano, così anche l’Iddio di Ezechia non salverà il suo.

18 Quei servitori gridarono ancora ad alta voce, in lingua giudaica, al popolo di Gerusalemme, ch’era in su le mura, per ispaventarlo, e per conturbarlo; per prendere in questa maniera la città.

19 E parlarono dell’Iddio di Gerusalemme, come degl’iddii de’ popoli della terra, che sono opera di mani d’uomini.

20 Allora il re Ezechia, e il profeta Isaia, figliuolo d’Amos, fecero orazione per queste cose, e gridarono verso il cielo.

21 E il Signore mandò un Angelo, il quale distrusse ogni valente uomo, ed ogni capo e capitano ch’era nel campo del re degli Assiri; laonde egli se ne ritornò svergognato al suo paese. Ed essendo entrato nella casa de’ suoi dii, di quelli che erano usciti delle sue interiora, l’uccisero quivi con la spada.

22 Così il Signore salvò Ezechia, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, dalla mano di Sennacherib, re degli Assiri, e dalla mano d’ogni altro; e li sollevò d’ogn’intorno.

23 E molti portavano offerte al Signore in Gerusalemme, e cose preziose ad Ezechia, re di Giuda. E dopo queste cose, egli fu innalzato appresso tutte le nazioni.

24 IN que’ giorni, Ezechia infermò fino alla morte; ma egli fece orazione al Signore; ed esso gli parlò, e gli diede un segno.

25 Ma Ezechia non fu riconoscente del beneficio ricevuto; perciocchè il suo cuore s’innalzò; laonde vi fu indegnazione contro a lui, contro a Giuda, e contro a Gerusalemme.

26 Ma pure Ezechia, con gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, si umiliò di ciò che il suo cuore si era innalzato; e per ciò l’indegnazione del Signore non venne sopra loro al tempo d’Ezechia.

27 Ezechia dunque ebbe grandissime ricchezze e gloria; e si fece de’ tesori d’argento, e d’oro, e di pietre preziose, e d’aromati, e di scudi, e d’ogni sorta di cari arredi.

28 Fece ancora de’ magazzini per l’entrata del grano, e del vino, e dell’olio; e delle stalle, per ogni sorta di grosso bestiame; e delle mandre presso di quelle.

29 Si fece eziandio delle città; ed acquistò molto bestiame, minuto e grosso; perciocchè Iddio gli avea date grandissime ricchezze.

30 Ezechia fu eziandio quello che turò la fonte alta delle acque di Ghihon, e condusse quell’acqua per diritto sotto terra, dall’Occidente alla città di Davide. Ed Ezechia prosperò in tutte le sue opere.

31 E in questo stato, essendo lui con gli ambasciatori de’ principi di Babilonia, i quali aveano mandato a lui per informarsi del miracolo ch’era avvenuto in terra, Iddio lo lasciò, per far prova di lui, per conoscer tutto ciò ch’egli avea nel cuor suo.

32 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Ezechia, e le sue pie opere; ecco, queste cose sono scritte nella visione del profeta Isaia, figliuolo di Amos, e nel libro dei re di Giuda, e d’Israele.

33 Poi Ezechia giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito nel più alto delle sepolture de’ figliuoli di Davide. E tutto Giuda, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, gli fecero onore alla sua morte. E Manasse, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

1 After these events, in which King Hezekiah served the Lord faithfully, Sennacherib, the emperor of Assyria, invaded Judah. He besieged the fortified cities and gave orders for his army to break their way through the walls.

2 When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib intended to attack Jerusalem also,

3 he and his officials decided to cut off the supply of water outside the city in order to keep the Assyrians from having any water when they got near Jerusalem. The officials led a large number of people out and stopped up all the springs, so that no more water flowed out of them.

5 The king strengthened the city's defenses by repairing the wall, building towers on it, and building an outer wall. In addition, he repaired the defenses built on the land that was filled in on the east side of the old part of Jerusalem. He also had a large number of spears and shields made.

6 He placed all the men in the city under the command of army officers and had them assemble in the open square at the city gate. He said to them,

7 "Be determined and confident, and don't be afraid of the Assyrian emperor or of the army he is leading. We have more power on our side than he has on his.

8 He has human power, but we have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles." The people were encouraged by these words of their king.

9 Some time later, while Sennacherib and his army were still at Lachish, he sent the following message to Hezekiah and the people of Judah who were with him in Jerusalem:

10 "I, Sennacherib, Emperor of Assyria, ask what gives you people the confidence to remain in Jerusalem under siege.

11 Hezekiah tells you that the Lord your God will save you from our power, but Hezekiah is deceiving you and will let you die of hunger and thirst.

12 He is the one who destroyed the Lord's shrines and altars and then told the people of Judah and Jerusalem to worship and burn incense at one altar only.

13 Don't you know what my ancestors and I have done to the people of other nations? Did the gods of any other nation save their people from the emperor of Assyria?

14 When did any of the gods of all those countries ever save their country from us? Then what makes you think that your god can save you?

15 Now don't let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like that. Don't believe him! No god of any nation has ever been able to save his people from any Assyrian emperor. So certainly this god of yours can't save you!"

16 The Assyrian officials said even worse things about the Lord God and Hezekiah, the Lord's servant.

17 The letter that the emperor wrote defied the Lord, the God of Israel. It said, "The gods of the nations have not saved their people from my power, and neither will Hezekiah's god save his people from me."

18 The officials shouted this in Hebrew in order to frighten and discourage the people of Jerusalem who were on the city wall, so that it would be easier to capture the city.

19 They talked about the God of Jerusalem in the same way that they talked about the gods of the other peoples, idols made by human hands.

20 Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed to God and cried out to him for help.

21 The Lord sent an angel that killed the soldiers and officers of the Assyrian army. So the emperor went back to Assyria disgraced. One day when he was in the temple of his god, some of his sons killed him with their swords.

22 In this way the Lord rescued King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the power of Sennacherib, the emperor of Assyria, and also from their other enemies. He let the people live in peace with all the neighboring countries.

23 Many people came to Jerusalem, bringing offerings to the Lord and gifts to Hezekiah, so that from then on all the nations held Hezekiah in honor.

24 About this time King Hezekiah became sick and almost died. He prayed, and the Lord gave him a sign that he would recover.

25 But Hezekiah was too proud to show gratitude for what the Lord had done for him, and Judah and Jerusalem suffered for it.

26 Finally, however, Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem humbled themselves, and so the Lord did not punish the people until after Hezekiah's death.

27 King Hezekiah became very wealthy, and everyone held him in honor. He had storerooms built for his gold, silver, precious stones, spices, shields, and other valuable objects.

28 In addition, he had storehouses built for his grain, wine, and olive oil; barns for his cattle; and pens for his sheep.

29 Besides all this, God gave him sheep and cattle and so much other wealth that he built many cities.

30 It was King Hezekiah who blocked the outlet for Gihon Spring and channeled the water to flow through a tunnel to a point inside the walls of Jerusalem. Hezekiah succeeded in everything he did,

31 and even when the Babylonian ambassadors came to inquire about the unusual event that had happened in the land, God let Hezekiah go his own way only in order to test his character.

32 Everything else that King Hezekiah did and his devotion to the Lord are recorded in [The Vision of the Prophet Isaiah Son of Amoz] and in [The History of the Kings of Judah and Israel.]

33 Hezekiah died and was buried in the upper section of the royal tombs. All the people of Judah and Jerusalem paid him great honor at his death. His son Manasseh succeeded him as king.
