1 ORA in capo de’ vent’anni, ne’ quali Salomone avea edificata la Casa del Signore e la sua,

2 Salomone riedificò le città che Huram gli avea date, e vi fece abitare de’ figliuoli d’Israele.

3 Poi Salomone andò in Hamat di Soba, e l’occupò.

4 Ed edificò Tadmor nel deserto, insieme con tutte le città da magazzini, le quali egli edificò in Hamat.

5 Riedificò anche Bet-horon disopra, e Bet-horon disotto, città forti di mura, di porte, e di sbarre.

6 Riedificò ancora Baalat, e tutte le città de’ suoi magazzini, e tutte le città dove erano i carri, e quelle dove stavano le genti a cavallo; ed in somma, tutto ciò ch’egli ebbe desiderio di edificare in Gerusalemme, e nel Libano, ed in tutto il paese della sua signoria.

7 E Salomone fece tributario tutto il popolo ch’era rimasto degli Hittei, e degli Amorrei, e de’ Ferizzei, e degli Hivvei, e de’ Gebusei, i quali non erano d’Israele;

8 cioè, de’ figliuoli di coloro che erano rimasti dopo loro nel paese, i quali i figliuoli d’Israele non aveano distrutti; e son rimasti tributari infino a questo giorno.

9 Ma d’infra i figliuoli d’Israele, i quali Salomone non fece servi, per lavorare a’ suoi lavori perciocchè essi erano uomini di guerra, e colonnelli de’ suoi capitani, e capi de’ suoi carri, e della sua cavalleria;

10 costoro furono capi de’ commissari del re Salomone, cioè: dugencinquanta, i quali aveano il reggimento di quella gente.

11 Or Salomone fece salire la figliuola di Faraone dalla città di Davide, nella casa ch’egli le avea edificata; perciocchè disse: La mia moglie non abiterà nella casa di Davide, re d’Israele; perciocchè i luoghi, ne’ quali l’Arca del Signore è entrata, son santi.

12 Allora Salomone offerse olocausti al Signore, sopra l’Altar del Signore, il quale egli avea edificato davanti al portico.

13 Egli offeriva eziandio di giorno in giorno ciò che si conveniva offerire secondo il comandamento di Mosè, nei sabati, e nelle calendi, e nelle feste solenni, tre volte l’anno; nella festa degli azzimi, e nella festa delle settimane, e nella festa de’ tabernacoli.

14 E costituì, secondo l’ordine di Davide, suo padre, i sacerdoti nel lor ministerio, secondo i loro spartimenti; ed i Leviti ne’ loro uffici, per lodare il Signore, e per ministrar davanti a’ sacerdoti, secondo che si conveniva fare per ciascun giorno; e i portinai, secondo i loro spartimenti per ciascuna porta; perciocchè tale era stato il comandamento di Davide, uomo di Dio.

15 Ei non si deviò punto dal comandamento del re, intorno a’ sacerdoti, ed a’ Leviti, nè intorno ad alcun’altra cosa, nè intorno a’ tesori.

16 Ora l’apparecchio di tutta l’opera di Salomone era già fatto, dal giorno che la Casa del Signore fu fondata, finchè fu compiuta. E quando la Casa del Signore fu finita,

17 allora Salomone andò in Esion-gheber, ed in Elot, in sul lito del mare, nel paese di Edom.

18 E Huram gli mandò, per i suoi servitori, materie da far navi, e marinari intendenti; i quali andarono, co’ servitori di Salomone, in Ofir, e tolsero di là trecencinquanta talenti d’oro, e li condussero al re Salomone.

1 It took Solomon twenty years to build the Temple and his palace.

2 He also rebuilt the cities that King Hiram had given him, and sent Israelites to settle in them.

3 He captured the territory of Hamath and Zobah

4 and fortified the city of Palmyra in the desert. He rebuilt all the cities in Hamath that were centers for storing supplies.

5 Solomon also rebuilt the following cities: Upper Beth Horon and Lower Beth Horon (fortified cities with gates that could be barred),

6 the city of Baalath, all the cities where he stored supplies, and the cities where his horses and chariots were stationed. He carried out all his plans for building in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and throughout the territory that he ruled over.

7 Solomon employed at forced labor all the descendants of the people of Canaan whom the Israelites had not killed when they took possession of the land. These included Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, whose descendants continue to be slaves down to the present time.

9 Israelites were not used at forced labor, but served as soldiers, officers, chariot commanders, and cavalry troops.

10 There were 250 officials in charge of the forced labor working on the various building projects.

11 Solomon moved his wife, the daughter of the king of Egypt, from David's City to a house he built for her. He said, "She must not live in the palace of King David of Israel, because any place where the Covenant Box has been is holy."

12 Solomon offered sacrifices to the Lord on the altar which he had built in front of the Temple.

13 He offered burnt offerings according to the requirements of the Law of Moses for each holy day: Sabbaths, New Moon Festivals, and the three annual festivals - the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Harvest Festival, and the Festival of Shelters.

14 Following the rules laid down by his father David, he organized the daily work of the priests and of the Levites who assisted the priests in singing hymns and in doing their work. He also organized the Temple guards in sections for performing their daily duties at each gate, in accordance with the commands of David, the man of God.

15 The instructions which David had given the priests and the Levites concerning the storehouses and other matters were carried out in detail.

16 By this time all of Solomon's projects had been completed. From the laying of the foundation of the Lord's Temple to its completion, all the work had been successful.

17 Then Solomon went to Eziongeber and Elath, ports on the shore of the Gulf of Aqaba, in the land of Edom.

18 King Hiram sent him ships under the command of his own officers and with experienced sailors. They sailed with Solomon's officers to the land of Ophir and brought back to Solomon about sixteen tons of gold.
