Wycliffe WYC
1 I, the elder, am writing this letter. I am sending it to the chosen lady and her children. I love all of you because of the truth. I'm not the only one who loves you. So does everyone who knows the truth.
1
The elder man, to the chosen lady [The elder man to the lady Electa], and to her children, which I love in truth; and not I alone, but also all men that know truth [but and all men that knew truth];
2 I love you because of the truth that is alive in us. That truth will be with us forever.
2
for the truth that dwelleth in you, and with you shall be without end. [for the truth that dwelleth in you, and with you shall be into without end].
3 God the Father and Jesus Christ his Son will give you grace, mercy and peace. Those blessings will be with us because we love the truth.
3
Grace be with you, mercy, and peace of God the Father, and of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and charity.
4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children living by the truth. That's just what the Father commanded us to do.
4
I joyed full much, for I found of thy sons going in truth, as we received commandment of the Father.
5 Dear lady, I'm not writing you a new command. I'm writing a command we've had from the beginning. I'm asking that we love one another.
5
And now I pray thee, lady, not as writing a new commandment to thee, but that that we had from the beginning, that we love each other.
6 The way we show our love is to obey God's commands. He commands you to lead a life of love. That's what you have heard from the beginning.
6
And this is charity, that we walk after his commandments. For this is the commandment, that as ye heard at the beginning, walk ye in him.
7 Many people who try to fool others have gone out into the world. They don't agree that Jesus Christ came in a human body. People like that try to trick others. They are enemies of Christ.
7
For many deceivers went out into the world, which acknowledge not that Jesus Christ hath come in flesh; this is a deceiver and antichrist.
8 Watch out that you don't lose what you have worked for. Make sure that you get your complete reward.
8
See ye yourselves, lest ye lose the things that ye have wrought, [but] that ye receive full meed;
9 Some people run ahead of others. They don't follow the teaching of Christ. People like that don't belong to God. But those who follow the teaching of Christ belong to the Father and the Son.
9
witting that each man that goeth before [witting that each man that goeth away], and dwelleth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God. He that dwelleth in the teaching [of Christ], hath both the Son and the Father.
10 Suppose someone comes to you and doesn't teach these truths. Then don't take him into your house. Don't welcome him.
10
If any man cometh to you, and bringeth not this teaching, do not ye receive him into your house, neither say to him, Hail.
11 Anyone who welcomes him shares in his evil work.
11
For he that saith to him, Hail, communeth with his evil works. Lo! I before-said to you, that ye be not confounded in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
12 I have a lot to write to you. But I don't want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope I can visit you. Then I can talk with you face to face. That will make our joy complete.
12
I have more things to write to you, and I would not by parchment and ink [I having more things to write to you, would not by parchment and ink]; for I hope that I shall come to you, and speak mouth to mouth, that our joy be full.
13 The children of your chosen sister send their greetings.
13
The sons of thy chosen sister greet thee well [The sons of thy sister Electa greet thee well]. The grace of God be with thee. Amen.
