1 OR Atalia, madre di Achazia, veggendo che il suo figliuolo era morto, si levò, e distrusse tutta la progenie reale.

2 Ma Ioseba, figliuola del re Gioram, sorella di Achazia, prese Gioas, figliuolo di Achazia, e lo tolse furtivamente d’infra i figliuoli del re che si uccidevano, e lo mise, con la sua balia, in una delle camere de’ letti; e così fu nascosto d’innanzi ad Atalia, e non fu ucciso.

3 E stette così nascosto con quella, lo spazio di sei anni, nella Casa del Signore; ed in quel mezzo tempo Atalia regnava sopra il paese.

4 Ma l’anno settimo, Gioiada mandò a chiamare de’ capi di centinaia per esser capitani e sergenti; e li fece venire a sè nella Casa del Signore, e fece lega con loro, e fece lor giurare nella Casa del Signore; poi mostrò loro il figliuolo del re.

5 E diede loro ordine, dicendo: Quest’è quello che voi farete: La terza parte di voi, cioè quelli ch’entrano in settimana, faccia ancora la guardia alla casa del re;

6 e faccia un’altra terza parte la guardia alla porta di Sur; ed un’altra terza parte alla porta di dietro ai sergenti. Così, voi i primi farete la guardia al corpo del Tempio;

7 e le altre due parti di voi, cioè tutti quelli che escono di settimana, faranno eziandio la guardia alla Casa del Signore per il re.

8 E voi circonderete il re d’ogn’intorno, avendo ciascuno le sue armi in mano; e chiunque entrerà dentro agli ordini, sia fatto morire. Siate eziandio col re, quando egli uscirà, e quando egli entrerà.

9 E que’ capi delle centinaia fecero interamente come il sacerdote Gioiada avea comandato; e ciascun di essi prese i suoi uomini, cioè, quelli ch’entravano in settimana, e quelli che ne uscivano, e vennero al sacerdote Gioiada.

10 E il sacerdote diede a que’ capi delle centinaia le lance e gli scudi ch’erano stati del re Davide, ed erano nella Casa del Signore.

11 Ed i sergenti stettero in piè, ciascuno con le sue armi in mano, dal lato destro della Casa fino al sinistro, presso dell’Altare, e della Casa, d’intorno al re.

12 Allora Gioiada menò fuori il figliuolo del re, e pose sopra lui la benda reale, e gli ornamenti; ed essi lo fecero re, e l’unsero; e tutti, battendo palma a palma, dicevano: Viva il re.

13 Or Atalia udì il romore de’ sergenti e del popolo, e se ne venne al popolo, nella Casa del Signore.

14 E riguardò; ed ecco il re, che stava in piè sopra la pila, secondo il costume, e i capitani e i trombettieri erano presso del re, e tutto il popolo del paese era allegro, e sonava con le trombe. Allora Atalia si stracciò le vesti, e gridò: Congiura, congiura.

15 E il sacerdote Gioiada comandò a que’ capi delle centinaia, che aveano la condotta di quell’esercito, e disse loro: Menatela fuor degli ordini; e chiunque la seguiterà sia ucciso con la spada. Perciocchè il sacerdote avea detto: Non facciasi morire nella Casa del Signore.

16 Essi adunque le fecero largo; e come ella se ne ritornava per la via dell’entrata dei cavalli verso la casa del re, fu quivi uccisa.

17 E Gioiada trattò patto fra il Signore e il re, e il popolo, ch’essi sarebbero popolo del Signore; parimente fra il re e il popolo.

18 E tutto il popolo del paese entrò nel tempio di Baal, e lo disfece, insieme con gli altari di esso, e spezzò interamente le sue immagini, ed uccise Mattan, sacerdote di Baal, davanti a quegli altari. Poi il sacerdote dispose gli uffici nella Casa del Signore.

19 E prese i capi delle centinaia, e i capitani, e i sergenti, e tutto il popolo del paese, e condussero il re a basso, fuor della Casa del Signore; e vennero nella casa del re, per la via della porta de’ sergenti. E il re sedette sopra il trono reale.

20 E tutto il popolo del paese si rallegrò, e la città fu in quiete, dopo che Atalia fu stata uccisa con la spada, nella casa del re.

21 Gioas era d’età di sett’anni, quando cominciò a regnare.

1 As soon as King Ahaziah's mother Athaliah learned of her son's murder, she gave orders for all the members of the royal family to be killed.

2 Only Ahaziah's son Joash escaped. He was about to be killed with the others, but was rescued by his aunt Jehosheba, who was King Jehoram's daughter and Ahaziah's half sister. She took him and his nurse into a bedroom in the Temple and hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not killed.

3 For six years Jehosheba took care of the boy and kept him hidden in the Temple, while Athaliah ruled as queen.

4 But in the seventh year Jehoiada the priest sent for the officers in charge of the royal bodyguard and of the palace guards, and told them to come to the Temple, where he made them agree under oath to what he planned to do. He showed them King Ahaziah's son Joash

5 and gave them the following orders: "When you come on duty on the Sabbath, one third of you are to guard the palace;

6 another third are to stand guard at the Sur Gate, and the other third are to stand guard at the gate behind the other guards.

7 The two groups that go off duty on the Sabbath are to stand guard at the Temple to protect the king.

8 You are to guard King Joash with drawn swords and stay with him wherever he goes. Anyone who comes near you is to be killed."

9 The officers obeyed Jehoiada's instructions and brought their men to him - those going off duty on the Sabbath and those going on duty.

10 He gave the officers the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and had been kept in the Temple,

11 and he stationed the men with drawn swords all around the front of the Temple, to protect the king.

12 Then Jehoiada led Joash out, placed the crown on his head, and gave him a copy of the laws governing kingship. Then Joash was anointed and proclaimed king. The people clapped their hands and shouted, "Long live the king!"

13 Queen Athaliah heard the noise being made by the guards and the people, so she hurried to the Temple, where the crowd had gathered.

14 There she saw the new king standing by the column at the entrance of the Temple, as was the custom. He was surrounded by the officers and the trumpeters, and the people were all shouting joyfully and blowing trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes in distress and shouted, "Treason! Treason!"

15 Jehoiada did not want Athaliah killed in the Temple area, so he ordered the army officers: "Take her out between the rows of guards, and kill anyone who tries to rescue her."

16 They seized her, took her to the palace, and there at the Horse Gate they killed her.

17 The priest Jehoiada had King Joash and the people make a covenant with the Lord that they would be the Lord's people; he also made a covenant between the king and the people.

18 Then the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down; they smashed the altars and the idols, and killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars. Jehoiada put guards on duty at the Temple,

19 and then he, the officers, the royal bodyguard, and the palace guards escorted the king from the Temple to the palace, followed by all the people. Joash entered by the Guard Gate and took his place on the throne.

20 All the people were filled with happiness, and the city was quiet, now that Athaliah had been killed in the palace.

21 Joash became king of Judah at the age of seven.
