1 L’ANNO secondo di Gioas, figliuolo di Gioachaz, re d’Israele, Amasia, figliuolo di Gioas, re di Giuda, cominciò a regnare.

2 Egli era d’età di venticinque anni, quando cominciò a regnare, a regnò ventinove anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Gioaddan, da Gerusalemme.

3 Egli fece ciò che piace al Signore; non però come Davide, suo padre; egli fece interamente come avea fatto Gioas, suo padre.

4 Sol gli alti luoghi non furono tolti; il popolo sacrificava ancora, e faceva profumi in su gli alti luoghi.

5 Ora, come il regno fu stabilito nelle sue mani, egli percosse i suoi servitori, che aveano ucciso il re suo padre.

6 Ma non fece morire i figliuoli loro, secondo ch’è scritto nel libro della Legge di Mosè, nella quale il Signore ha comandato che non si facciano morire i padri per li figliuoli, nè i figliuoli per li padri; anzi, che ciascuno sia fatto morire per lo suo proprio peccato.

7 Egli percosse gl’Idumei nella valle del sale, in numero di dodicimila uomini; e prese Sela per forza d’arme, e le pose nome Iocteel, il qual le dura infino ad oggi.

8 Allora Amasia mandò messi a Gioas, figliuolo di Gioachaz, figliuolo di Iehu, re d’Israele, a dirgli: Vieni, veggiamoci in faccia l’un l’altro.

9 Ma Gioas, re d’Israele, mandò a dire ad Amasia, re di Giuda: Uno spino ch’era nel Libano, mandò già a dire al cedro del Libano: Da’ la tua figliuola per moglie al mio figliuolo; ma le fiere del Libano, passando, calpestarono quello spino.

10 Tu hai gravemente percossi gl’Idumei, e perciò il tuo cuore ti fa innalzare; godi della tua gloria, e stattene in casa tua; perchè ti rimescoleresti in un male, per lo quale tu, e Giuda teco, cadereste?

11 Ma Amasia non gli diè d’orecchio. Gioas adunque, re d’Israele, salì contro ad Amasia, re di Giuda; ed essi si videro l’un l’altro in faccia in Bet-semes, città di Giuda.

12 E Giuda fu sconfitto da Israele; e ciascuno se ne fuggì alle sue stanze.

13 E Gioas, re d’Israele, prese in Bet-semes Amasia, re di Giuda, figliuolo di Gioas, figliuolo di Achazia; poi venne in Gerusalemme, e fece una rottura nel muro di Gerusalemme, dalla porta di Efraim, infino alla porta del Cantone, lo spazio di quattrocento cubiti.

14 E prese tutto l’oro e l’argento, e tutti i vasellamenti che si trovarono nella Casa del Signore, e nei tesori della casa del re; prese eziandio stadichi; poi se ne ritornò in Samaria.

15 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Gioas, e la sua prodezza, e come egli combattè con Amasia, re di Giuda; queste cose non sono esse scritte nel libro delle Croniche dei re d’Israele?

16 E Gioas giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito in Samaria, coi re d’Israele, e Geroboamo, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

17 Ed Amasia, figliuolo di Gioas, re di Giuda, visse ancora quindici anni, dopo la morte di Gioas, figliuolo di Gioachaz, re d’Israele.

18 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Amasia; queste cose non sono esse scritte nel libro delle Croniche dei re di Giuda?

19 Or alcuni fecero una congiura contro a lui, in Gerusalemme; ed egli fuggì in Lachis; ma essi gli mandarono dietro in Lachis, e l’uccisero quivi.

20 E di là fu portato sopra cavalli, e fu seppellito in Gerusalemme, co’ suoi padri, nella Città di Davide.

21 E tutto il popolo di Giuda prese Azaria, il quale era d’età di sedici anni, e lo costituirono re, in luogo di Amasia, suo padre.

22 Egli edificò Elat, avendola racquistata a Giuda, dopo che il re fu giaciuto co’ suoi padri.

23 L’anno quintodecimo di Amasia, figliuolo di Gioas, re di Giuda, Geroboamo, figliuolo di Gioas, re d’Israele, cominciò a regnare in Samaria; e regnò quarantun anno.

24 E fece quello che dispiace al Signore; egli non si rivolse da alcuno de’ peccati di Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, coi quali egli avea fatto peccare Israele.

25 Costui ristabilì i confini d’Israele dall’entrata di Hamat, fino al mare della campagna; secondo la parola del Signore Iddio d’Israele, ch’egli avea pronunziata per lo profeta Giona, suo servitore, figliuolo di Amittai, il quale era da Gat-hefer.

26 Perciocchè il Signore vide l’afflizione d’Israele ch’era molto aspra, e che non vi era più nè serrato nè abbandonato, nè chi soccorresse Israele.

27 E il Signore non avea ancora parlato di cancellare il nome d’Israele disotto al cielo; e però egli li salvò per man di Geroboamo, figliuolo di Gioas.

28 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Geroboamo, e tutto quello ch’egli fece, e la sua prodezza, con la quale guerreggiò, e con la quale racquistò ad Israele Damasco ed Hamat, ch’erano state di Giuda; queste cose non sono esse scritte nel libro delle Croniche dei re d’Israele?

29 E Geroboamo giacque co’ suoi padri, cioè coi re d’Israele; e Zaccaria, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

1 In the second year of the reign of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz as king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah

2 at the age of twenty-five, and he ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. His mother was Jehoaddin from Jerusalem.

3 He did what was pleasing to the Lord, but he was not like his ancestor King David; instead, he did what his father Joash had done.

4 He did not tear down the pagan places of worship, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

5 As soon as Amaziah was firmly in power, he executed the officials who had killed his father, the king.

6 However, he did not kill their children but followed what the Lord had commanded in the Law of Moses: "Parents are not to be put to death for crimes committed by their children, and children are not to be put to death for crimes committed by their parents; people are to be put to death only for a crime they themselves have committed."

7 Amaziah killed ten thousand Edomite soldiers in Salt Valley; he captured the city of Sela in battle and called it Joktheel, the name it still has.

8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to King Jehoash of Israel, challenging him to fight.

9 But King Jehoash sent back the following reply: "Once a thorn bush on the Lebanon Mountains sent a message to a cedar: "Give your daughter in marriage to my son.' A wild animal passed by and trampled the bush down.

10 Now Amaziah, you have defeated the Edomites, and you are filled with pride. Be satisfied with your fame and stay at home. Why stir up trouble that will only bring disaster on you and your people?"

11 But Amaziah refused to listen, so King Jehoash marched out with his men and fought against him at Beth Shemesh in Judah.

12 Amaziah's army was defeated, and all his soldiers fled to their homes.

13 Jehoash took Amaziah prisoner, advanced on Jerusalem, and tore down the city wall from Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of two hundred yards.

14 He took all the silver and gold he could find, all the Temple equipment and all the palace treasures, and carried them back to Samaria. He also took hostages with him.

15 Everything else that Jehoash did, including his bravery in the war against King Amaziah of Judah, is recorded in [The History of the Kings of Israel.]

16 Jehoash died and was buried in the royal tombs in Samaria, and his son Jeroboam II succeeded him as king.

17 King Amaziah of Judah lived fifteen years after the death of King Jehoash of Israel.

19 There was a plot in Jerusalem to assassinate Amaziah, so he fled to the city of Lachish, but his enemies followed him there and killed him.

20 His body was carried back to Jerusalem on a horse and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City.

21 The people of Judah then crowned his sixteen-year-old son Uzziah as king.

22 Uzziah reconquered and rebuilt Elath after his father's death.

23 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Amaziah son of Joash as king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Jehoash became king of Israel, and he ruled in Samaria for forty-one years.

24 He sinned against the Lord, following the wicked example of his predecessor King Jeroboam son of Nebat, who led Israel into sin.

25 He reconquered all the territory that had belonged to Israel, from Hamath Pass in the north to the Dead Sea in the south. This was what the Lord, the God of Israel, had promised through his servant the prophet Jonah son of Amittai from Gath Hepher.

26 The Lord saw the terrible suffering of the Israelites; there was no one at all to help them.

27 But it was not the Lord's purpose to destroy Israel completely and forever, so he rescued them through King Jeroboam II.

28 Everything else that Jeroboam II did, his brave battles, and how he restored Damascus and Hamath to Israel, are all recorded in [The History of the Kings of Israel.]

29 Jeroboam died and was buried in the royal tombs, and his son Zechariah succeeded him as king.
