1 OR Naaman, capo dell’esercito del re di Siria, era uomo grande appo il suo signore, e molto onorato; perciocchè per lui il Signore avea date delle vittorie a’ Siri; ma quest’uomo, possente e prode, era lebbroso.

2 Or alcune schiere de’ Siri uscirono per fare una correria, e menarono prigione dal paese d’Israele una piccola fanciulla; ed ella, essendo al servigio della moglie di Naaman,

3 disse alla sua signora: Piacesse a Dio che il mio signore fosse appresso del profeta, ch’è in Samaria; egli l’avrebbe tosto liberato dalla sua lebbra.

4 E Naaman venne al suo signore, e gli dichiarò la cosa, dicendo: Quella fanciulla, ch’è del paese d’Israele, ha parlato così e così.

5 E il re di Siria gli disse: Or su, vacci; ed io ne manderò lettere al re d’Israele. Egli adunque andò, e prese in mano dieci talenti d’argento, e seimila sicli d’oro, e dieci mute di vestimenti.

6 E portò le lettere al re d’Israele, il cui tenore era questo: Ora, come queste lettere saranno pervenute a te, sappi che io ti ho mandato Naaman, mio servitore, acciocchè tu lo liberi dalla sua lebbra.

7 E quando il re d’Israele ebbe lette le lettere, stracciò i suoi vestimenti, e disse: Sono io Dio, da far morire, e da tornare in vita, che costui mi manda che io liberi un uomo dalla sua lebbra? ma del certo sappiate ora, e vedete ch’egli cerca occasione contro a me.

8 Ma come Eliseo, uomo di Dio, ebbe inteso che il re d’Israele avea stracciati i suoi vestimenti, gli mandò a dire: Perchè hai stracciati i tuoi vestimenti? venga pur Naaman a me, e conoscerà che vi è un profeta in Israele.

9 Naaman adunque venne, co’ suoi cavalli, e col suo carro, e si fermò alla porta della casa di Eliseo.

10 Ed Eliseo mandò a dirgli per un messo: Va’, lavati sette volte nel Giordano, e la carne ti ritornerà sana e netta.

11 Ma Naaman si adirò, e se ne andò, e disse: Ecco, io diceva fra me stesso: Egli del tutto uscirà fuori, e si fermerà, ed invocherà il Nome del Signore Iddio suo, e menerà la mano sopra il luogo, e libererà il lebbroso.

12 Abana e Parpar, fiumi di Damasco, non vagliono essi meglio che tutte le acque d’Israele? non mi potrei io lavare in essi, ed esser nettato? Egli adunque si rivolse indietro, e se ne andava via tutto cruccioso.

13 Ma i suoi servitori si accostarono, e gli fecero motto, e dissero: Padre mio, se il profeta ti avesse detta qualche gran cosa, non l’avresti tu fatta; quanto più devi tu far ciò ch’egli ti ha detto: Lavati, e sarai netto?

14 Egli adunque scese, e si tuffò sette volte nel Giordano, secondo la parola dell’uomo di Dio; e la carne gli ritornò simile alla carne di un piccol fanciullo, e fu netto.

15 Allora egli ritornò all’uomo di Dio, con tutto il suo seguito, e venne, e si presentò davanti a lui, e disse: Ecco, ora io conosco che non vi è alcun Dio in tutta la terra, se non in Israele; ora dunque, ti prego, prendi un presente dal tuo servitore.

16 Ma Eliseo disse: Come il Signore, al quale io servo, vive, io nol prenderò. E benchè Naaman gli facesse forza di prenderlo, pure lo ricusò.

17 E Naaman disse: Or non potrebbesi egli dare al tuo servitore il carico di due muli di terra? conciossiachè il tuo servitore non sia più per fare olocausto, nè sacrificio, ad altri dii, ma solo al Signore.

18 Il Signore voglia perdonar questa cosa al tuo servitore, se io m’inchino nel tempio di Rimmon, quando il mio signore entrerà in esso per adorare, e si appoggerà sopra la mia mano; il Signore perdoni al tuo servitore questa cosa, se io m’inchino nel tempio di Rimmon.

19 Ed Eliseo gli disse: Vattene in pace. Ed egli si partì da lui. Ed era già camminato un miglio di paese.

20 E Ghehazi, servitore di Eliseo, uomo di Dio, disse: Ecco, il mio signore si è astenuto di prendere di mano di questo Naaman Siro ciò ch’egli avea portato; come vive il Signore, io gli correrò dietro, e prenderò da lui qualche cosa.

21 Ghehazi dunque corse dietro a Naaman; e come Naaman vide ch’egli gli correva dietro, si gittò giù dal carro incontro a lui, e disse: Va ogni cosa bene?

22 Ed egli disse: Bene. Il mio signore mi ha mandato a dirti: Ecco, pure ora son venuti a me dal monte di Efraim due giovani, de’ figliuoli de’ profeti; deh! da’ loro un talento d’argento, e due mute di vestimenti.

23 E Naaman disse: Prendi pur due talenti; e gliene fece forza; e fece legare due talenti di argento in due sacchetti, e piegar due mute di vestimenti; e diede queste cose a due suoi servitori, che le portassero davanti a lui.

24 E quando egli fu giunto alla rocca, tolse quelle cose di man di coloro, e le ripose in una casa; poi rimandò quegli uomini, ed essi se ne andarono.

25 Ed egli venne, e si presentò al suo signore. Ed Eliseo gli disse: Onde vieni, Ghehazi? Ed egli rispose: Il tuo servitore non è andato nè qua nè là.

26 Ma egli gli disse: Il cuor mio non era egli andato là, quando quell’uomo ti si voltò incontro d’in sul suo carro? È egli tempo di prender danari, e vestimenti, e ulivi, e vigne, e pecore, e buoi, e servi, e serve?

27 Perciò, la lebbra di Naaman si attaccherà a te, e alla tua progenie, in perpetuo. Ed egli se ne uscì dalla presenza di esso, tutto lebbroso, bianco come neve.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army, was highly respected and esteemed by the king of Syria, because through Naaman the Lord had given victory to the Syrian forces. He was a great soldier, but he suffered from a dreaded skin disease.

2 In one of their raids against Israel, the Syrians had carried off a little Israelite girl, who became a servant of Naaman's wife.

3 One day she said to her mistress, "I wish that my master could go to the prophet who lives in Samaria! He would cure him of his disease."

4 When Naaman heard of this, he went to the king and told him what the girl had said.

5 The king said, "Go to the king of Israel and take this letter to him." So Naaman set out, taking thirty thousand pieces of silver, six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of fine clothes.

6 The letter that he took read: "This letter will introduce my officer Naaman. I want you to cure him of his disease."

7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in dismay and exclaimed, "How can the king of Syria expect me to cure this man? Does he think that I am God, with the power of life and death? It's plain that he is trying to start a quarrel with me!"

8 When the prophet Elisha heard what had happened, he sent word to the king: "Why are you so upset? Send the man to me, and I'll show him that there is a prophet in Israel!"

9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariot and stopped at the entrance to Elisha's house.

10 Elisha sent a servant out to tell him to go and wash himself seven times in the Jordan River, and he would be completely cured of his disease.

11 But Naaman left in a rage, saying, "I thought that he would at least come out to me, pray to the Lord his God, wave his hand over the diseased spot, and cure me!

12 Besides, aren't the rivers Abana and Pharpar, back in Damascus, better than any river in Israel? I could have washed in them and been cured!"

13 His servants went up to him and said, "Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something difficult, you would have done it. Now why can't you just wash yourself, as he said, and be cured?"

14 So Naaman went down to the Jordan, dipped himself in it seven times, as Elisha had instructed, and he was completely cured. His flesh became firm and healthy like that of a child.

15 He returned to Elisha with all his men and said, "Now I know that there is no god but the God of Israel; so please, sir, accept a gift from me."

16 Elisha answered, "By the living Lord, whom I serve, I swear that I will not accept a gift." Naaman insisted that he accept it, but he would not.

17 So Naaman said, "If you won't accept my gift, then let me have two mule-loads of earth to take home with me, because from now on I will not offer sacrifices or burnt offerings to any god except the Lord.

18 So I hope that the Lord will forgive me when I accompany my king to the temple of Rimmon, the god of Syria, and worship him. Surely the Lord will forgive me!"

19 "Go in peace," Elisha said. And Naaman left. He had gone only a short distance,

20 when Elisha's servant Gehazi said to himself, "My master has let Naaman get away without paying a thing! He should have accepted what that Syrian offered him. By the living Lord I will run after him and get something from him."

21 So he set off after Naaman. When Naaman saw a man running after him, he got down from his chariot to meet him, and asked, "Is something wrong?"

22 "No," Gehazi answered. "But my master sent me to tell you that just now two members of the group of prophets in the hill country of Ephraim arrived, and he would like you to give them three thousand pieces of silver and two changes of fine clothes."

23 "Please take six thousand pieces of silver," Naaman replied. He insisted on it, tied up the silver in two bags, gave them and two changes of fine clothes to two of his servants, and sent them on ahead of Gehazi.

24 When they reached the hill where Elisha lived, Gehazi took the two bags and carried them into the house. Then he sent Naaman's servants back.

25 He went back into the house, and Elisha asked him, "Where have you been?" "Oh, nowhere, sir," he answered.

26 But Elisha said, "Wasn't I there in spirit when the man got out of his chariot to meet you? This is no time to accept money and clothes, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and cattle, or servants!

27 And now Naaman's disease will come upon you, and you and your descendants will have it forever!" When Gehazi left, he had the disease - his skin was as white as snow.
