1 Allora Eliseo disse: Ascoltate la parola del Signore: Così ha detto il Signore: Domani a quest’ora lo staio del fior di farina si avrà per un siclo, e le due staia dell’orzo altresì per un siclo, alla porta di Samaria.

2 Ma il capitano, sopra la cui mano il re si appoggiava, rispose all’uomo di Dio, e disse: Ecco, avvegnachè il Signore facesse delle cateratte nel cielo, questo però potrebbe egli avvenire? Ed Eliseo gli disse: Ecco, tu il vedrai con gli occhi, ma non ne mangerai.

3 Or all’entrata della porta vi erano quattro uomini lebbrosi; ed essi dissero l’uno all’altro: Perchè ce ne stiamo qui finchè siamo morti?

4 Se diciamo di entrare nella città, la fame vi è, e noi vi morremo; se stiamo qui, morremo altresì; ora dunque venite, e andiamoci ad arrendere al campo de’ Siri; se ci lasciano in vita, viveremo; e se pur ci fanno morire, morremo.

5 Così si levarono al vespro, per entrare nel campo de’ Siri; e venuti fino allo stremo del campo, ecco, non vi era alcuno.

6 Perciocchè il Signore avea fatto risonar nel campo de’ Siri un romore di carri, e di cavalli, e di un grande esercito; laonde aveano detto l’uno all’altro: Ecco, il re d’Israele ha soldati contro a noi i re degli Hittei, e i re degli Egizj, per venire incontro a noi.

7 E si erano levati, ed erano fuggiti in sul vespro, e aveano lasciati i lor padiglioni, e i lor cavalli, e i loro asini, e il campo, nello stato ch’egli era; ed erano fuggiti chi qua chi là, secondo il volere di ciascuno.

8 Que’ lebbrosi adunque, venuti fino allo stremo del campo, entrarono in una tenda, e mangiarono, e bevvero, e tolsero di là argento, ed oro, e vestimenti, e andarono, e nascosero quelle cose; poi tornarono, ed entrarono in un’altra tenda, e tolsero ancora di là di quelle stesse cose, e andarono, e le nascosero.

9 Ma poi dissero l’uno all’altro: Noi non facciamo bene; questo giorno è un giorno di buone novelle, e noi tacciamo! Se aspettiamo fino allo schiarir del dì, noi riceveremo la pena del nostro fallo; ora dunque venite, e andiamo a rapportar la cosa alla casa del re.

10 Così vennero, e gridarono alle guardie della porta della città, e fecero loro assapere la cosa, dicendo: Noi siamo entrati nel campo dei Siri, ed ecco, non vi è alcuno, nè voce alcuna d’uomo; ma sol vi sono i cavalli, e gli asini legati, e i padiglioni, come erano prima.

11 Allora le guardie della porta gridarono, e fecero assapere la cosa nella casa del re.

12 E il re si levò di notte, e disse a’ suoi servitori: Ora io vi dichiarerò quello che i Siri ci hanno fatto; hanno saputo che noi siamo affamati, e per ciò sono usciti del campo, per nascondersi per la campagna, dicendo: Quando saranno usciti della città, noi li prenderemo vivi, ed entreremo nella città.

13 Ma uno de’ servitori del re rispose, e disse: Deh! prendansi cinque di que’ cavalli che son rimasti nella città ecco, sono come tutta la moltitudine d’Israele ch’è rimasta in esso; come tutta la moltitudine d’Israele ch’è perita; e mandiamo a vedere che cosa è.

14 Presero adunque due coppie di cavalli; e il re mandò degli uomini sopra quelli, dietro al campo de’ Siri, dicendo: Andate, e vedete.

15 E coloro andarono dietro a’ Siri, fino al Giordano; ed ecco, tutta la via era piena di vestimenti e d’arnesi, che i Siri aveano gittati via, affrettandosi di fuggire. E que’ messi ritornarono, e rapportarono il fatto al re.

16 Allora il popolo uscì, e predò il campo de’ Siri; e lo staio del fior di farina si ebbe per un siclo, e le due staia dell’orzo altresì per un siclo, secondo la parola del Signore.

17 E il re costituì alla guardia della porta il capitano, sopra la cui mano egli si appoggiava; e il popolo lo calpestò nella porta, onde egli morì, secondo che l’uomo di Dio avea detto, quando parlò al re, allora ch’egli scese a lui.

18 Perciocchè, quando l’uomo di Dio parlò al re, dicendo: Domani, a quest’ora, lo staio del fior di farina si avrà alla porta di Samaria per un siclo, e le due staia dell’orzo altresì per un siclo,

19 quel capitano avea risposto all’uomo di Dio, ed avea detto: Ecco, avvegnachè il Signore facesse delle cateratte nel cielo, questo potrebbe egli però avvenire? Ed egli gli avea detto: Ecco, tu il vedrai con gli occhi tuoi, ma tu non ne mangerai.

20 E così gli avvenne; perciocchè il popolo lo calpestò nella porta, ed egli morì.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Elisha answered, "Listen to what the Lord says! By this time tomorrow you will be able to buy in Samaria ten pounds of the best wheat or twenty pounds of barley for one piece of silver."

2 The personal attendant of the king said to Elisha, "That can't happen - not even if the Lord himself were to send grain at once!" "You will see it happen, but you won't get to eat any of the food," Elisha replied.

3 Four men who were suffering from a dreaded skin disease were outside the gates of Samaria, and they said to each other, "Why should we wait here until we die?

4 It's no use going into the city, because we would starve to death in there; but if we stay here, we'll die also. So let's go to the Syrian camp; the worst they can do is kill us, but maybe they will spare our lives."

5 So, as it began to get dark, they went to the Syrian camp, but when they reached it, no one was there.

6 The Lord had made the Syrians hear what sounded like the advance of a large army with horses and chariots, and the Syrians thought that the king of Israel had hired Hittite and Egyptian kings and their armies to attack them.

7 So that evening the Syrians had fled for their lives, abandoning their tents, horses, and donkeys, and leaving the camp just as it was.

8 When the four men reached the edge of the camp, they went into a tent, ate and drank what was there, grabbed the silver, gold, and clothing they found, and went off and hid them; then they returned, entered another tent, and did the same thing.

9 But then they said to each other, "We shouldn't be doing this! We have good news, and we shouldn't keep it to ourselves. If we wait until morning to tell it, we are sure to be punished. Let's go right now and tell the king's officers!"

10 So they left the Syrian camp, went back to Samaria, and called out to the guards at the gates: "We went to the Syrian camp and didn't see or hear anybody; the horses and donkeys have not been untied, and the tents are just as the Syrians left them."

11 The guards announced the news, and it was reported in the palace.

12 It was still night, but the king got out of bed and said to his officials, "I'll tell you what the Syrians are planning! They know about the famine here, so they have left their camp to go and hide in the countryside. They think that we will leave the city to find food, and then they will take us alive and capture the city."

13 One of his officials said, "The people here in the city are doomed anyway, like those that have already died. So let's send some men with five of the horses that are left, so that we can find out what has happened."

14 They chose some men, and the king sent them in two chariots with instructions to go and find out what had happened to the Syrian army.

15 The men went as far as the Jordan, and all along the road they saw the clothes and equipment that the Syrians had abandoned as they fled. Then they returned and reported to the king.

16 The people of Samaria rushed out and looted the Syrian camp. And as the Lord had said, ten pounds of the best wheat or twenty pounds of barley were sold for one piece of silver.

17 It so happened that the king of Israel had put the city gate under the command of the officer who was his personal attendant. The officer was trampled to death there by the people and died, as Elisha had predicted when the king went to see him.

18 Elisha had told the king that by that time the following day ten pounds of the best wheat or twenty pounds of barley would be sold in Samaria for one piece of silver,

19 to which the officer had answered, "That can't happen - not even if the Lord himself were to send grain at once!" And Elisha had replied, "You will see it happen, but you won't get to eat any of the food."

20 And that is just what happened to him - he died, trampled to death by the people at the city gate.
