1 ORA Eliseo parlò a quella donna, il cui figliuolo egli avea tornato in vita, dicendo: Levati, vattene con la tua famiglia, e dimora ove tu potrai; perciocchè il Signore ha chiamata la fame, ed ella è già venuta nel paese per sette anni.

2 Quella donna dunque si levò, e fece come l’uomo di Dio le avea detto, e se ne andò con la sua famiglia, e dimorò nel paese de’ Filistei sette anni.

3 Ed in capo di sette anni, quella donna ritornò dal paese de’ Filistei; poi uscì, per richiamarsi al re della sua casa, e delle sue possessioni.

4 Or il re parlava con Ghehazi, servitor dell’uomo di Dio, dicendo: Deh! raccontami tutte le gran cose ch’Eliseo ha fatte.

5 E mentre egli raccontava al re come egli avea tornato in vita un morto, ecco, la donna, il cui figliuolo Eliseo avea tornato in vita, venne a richiamarsi al re della sua casa, e delle sue possessioni. E Ghehazi disse: O re, mio signore, costei è quella donna, e costui è il suo figliuolo, il quale Eliseo ha tornato in vita.

6 E il re ne domandò la donna, ed ella gli raccontò il fatto. E il re le diede un eunuco, al quale disse: Fa’ restituire a costei tutto quello che le appartiene, e tutti i frutti delle sue possessioni, dal dì ch’ella lasciò il paese, infino ad ora.

7 ORA Eliseo venne in Damasco. E Ben-hadad, re di Siria, era infermo, e gli fu rapportato che l’uomo di Dio era venuto là.

8 E il re disse ad Hazael: Prendi in mano un presente, e vattene a trovar l’uomo di Dio, e domanda per lui il Signore, se io guarirò di questa infermità.

9 Hazael adunque andò a trovarlo; e prese un presente in mano, e il carico di quaranta cammelli di tutte le cose le più squisite di Damasco; e venne, e si presentò davanti a lui, e disse: Ben-hadad, re di Siria, tuo figliuolo, mi ha mandato a te, per dirti: Guarirò io di quest’infermità?

10 Ed Eliseo gli disse: Va’, digli: Veramente tu guarirai; ma pure il Signore mi ha fatto vedere che per certo egli morrà.

11 Poi l’uomo di Dio fermò il viso, e l’affissò sopra Hazael, tanto ch’egli n’ebbe vergogna; poi pianse.

12 Ed Hazael disse: Perchè piange il mio signore? Ed egli disse: Perciocchè io so il male che tu farai a’ figliuoli d’Israele; tu metterai a fuoco e fiamma le lor fortezze, ed ucciderai con la spada i lor giovani, e sbatterai i lor fanciulli, e fenderai le lor donne gravide.

13 Ed Hazael disse: Ma che cosa è pure il tuo servitore, che non è altro che un cane, per fare queste gran cose? Ed Eliseo disse: Il Signore mi ha fatto vedere che tu sarai re sopra la Siria.

14 Ed Hazael si partì d’appresso Eliseo, e venne al suo signore. Ed esso gli disse: Che ti ha detto Eliseo? Ed egli disse: Egli mi ha detto che per certo tu guarirai.

15 E il giorno appresso, Hazael prese una coverta da letto, e tuffatala nell’acqua, la distese sopra la faccia di Ben-hadad, onde egli morì; ed Hazael regnò in luogo suo.

16 ORA, l’anno quinto di Gioram, figliuolo di Achab, re d’Israele, essendo Giosafat ancora re di Giuda, Gioram, figliuolo di Giosafat, re di Giuda, cominciò a regnare sopra Giuda.

17 Egli era d’età di trentadue anni, quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò ott’anni in Gerusalemme.

18 E camminò per la via dei re d’Israele, come la casa di Achab avea fatto; perciocchè egli avea la figliuola di Achab per moglie; e fece ciò che dispiace al Signore.

19 Ma pure, per amor di Davide, suo servitore, il Signore non volle distruggere Giuda, secondo ch’egli avea detto a Davide, che sempre gli darebbe una lampana accesa d’infra i suoi figliuoli.

20 A’ dì di esso, gl’Idumei si ribellarono dall’ubbidienza di Giuda, e costituirono un re sopra loro.

21 Perciò Gioram passò in Seir, con tutti i carri; e avvenne una notte, ch’egli si levò, e percosse gl’Idumei che l’aveano intorniato, e i capitani de’ carri. E il popolo fuggì alle sue stanze.

22 E nondimeno gl’Idumei son perseverati nella lor ribellione dall’ubbidienza di Giuda, fino a questo giorno. In quello stesso tempo Libna ancora si ribellò.

23 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Gioram, e tutto quello ch’egli fece; queste cose non sono esse scritte nel libro delle Croniche dei re di Giuda?

24 E Gioram giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito co’ suoi padri nella Città di Davide. E Achazia, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

25 L’anno duodecimo di Gioram, figliuolo di Achab, re d’Israele, Achazia, figliuolo di Gioram, re di Giuda, cominciò a regnare.

26 Achazia era d’età di ventidue anni, quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò un anno in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Atalia, figliuola di Omri, re d’Israele.

27 Ed egli camminò per la via della casa di Achab, e fece quello che dispiace al Signore, come la casa di Achab; perciocchè egli era genero della casa di Achab.

28 Ed egli andò con Gioram, figliuolo di Achab, alla guerra contro ad Hazael, re di Siria, in Ramot di Galaad; ed i Siri ferirono Gioram.

29 E il re Gioram se ne ritornò, per farsi medicare in Izreel delle ferite che i Siri gli aveano date in Rama, quando egli combattè contro ad Hazael, re di Siria. Ed Achazia, figliuolo di Gioram, re di Giuda, scese per visitar Gioram, figliuolo di Achab, in Izreel; perciocchè egli era infermo.

1 Now Elisha had told the woman who lived in Shunem, whose son he had brought back to life, that the Lord was sending a famine on the land, which would last for seven years, and that she should leave with her family and go and live somewhere else.

2 She had followed his instructions and had gone with her family to live in Philistia for the seven years.

3 At the end of the seven years she returned to Israel and went to the king to ask that her house and her land be restored to her.

4 She found the king talking with Gehazi, Elisha's servant; the king wanted to know about Elisha's miracles.

5 While Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had brought a dead person back to life, the woman made her appeal to the king. Gehazi said to him, "Your Majesty, here is the woman and here is her son whom Elisha brought back to life!"

6 In answer to the king's question, she confirmed Gehazi's story, and so the king called an official and told him to give back to her everything that was hers, including the value of all the crops that her fields had produced during the seven years she had been away.

7 Elisha went to Damascus at a time when King Benhadad of Syria was sick. When the king was told that Elisha was there,

8 he said to Hazael, one of his officials, "Take a gift to the prophet and ask him to consult the Lord to find out whether or not I am going to get well."

9 So Hazael loaded forty camels with all kinds of the finest products of Damascus and went to Elisha. When Hazael met him, he said, "Your servant King Benhadad has sent me to ask you whether or not he will recover from his sickness."

10 Elisha answered, "The Lord has revealed to me that he will die; but go to him and tell him that he will recover."

11 Then Elisha stared at him with a horrified look on his face until Hazael became ill at ease. Suddenly Elisha burst into tears.

12 "Why are you crying, sir?" Hazael asked. "Because I know the horrible things you will do against the people of Israel," Elisha answered. "You will set their fortresses on fire, slaughter their finest young men, batter their children to death, and rip open their pregnant women."

13 "How could I ever be that powerful?" Hazael asked. "I'm a nobody!" "The Lord has shown me that you will be king of Syria," Elisha replied.

14 Hazael went back to Benhadad, who asked him, "What did Elisha say?" "He told me that you would certainly get well," Hazael answered.

15 But on the following day Hazael took a blanket, soaked it in water, and smothered the king. And Hazael succeeded Benhadad as king of Syria.

16 In the fifth year of the reign of Joram son of Ahab as king of Israel, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat became king of Judah

17 at the age of thirty-two, and he ruled in Jerusalem for eight years.

18 His wife was Ahab's daughter, and like the family of Ahab he followed the evil ways of the kings of Israel. He sinned against the Lord,

19 but the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah, because he had promised his servant David that his descendants would always continue to rule.

20 During Jehoram's reign Edom revolted against Judah and became an independent kingdom.

21 So Jehoram set out with all his chariots to Zair, where the Edomite army surrounded them. During the night he and his chariot commanders managed to break out and escape, and his soldiers scattered to their homes.

22 Edom has been independent of Judah ever since. During this same period the city of Libnah also revolted.

23 Everything else that Jehoram did is recorded in [The History of the Kings of Judah.]

24 Jehoram died and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City, and his son Ahaziah succeeded him as king.

25 In the twelfth year of the reign of Joram son of Ahab as king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah

26 at the age of twenty-two, and he ruled in Jerusalem for one year. His mother was Athaliah, the daughter of King Ahab and granddaughter of King Omri of Israel.

27 Since Ahaziah was related to King Ahab by marriage, he sinned against the Lord, just as Ahab's family did.

28 King Ahaziah joined King Joram of Israel in a war against King Hazael of Syria. The armies clashed at Ramoth in Gilead, and Joram was wounded in battle.

29 He returned to the city of Jezreel to recover from his wounds, and Ahaziah went there to visit him.
