2 Reyes 23

1 Entonces el rey mandó reunir con él a todos los ancianos de Judá y Jerusalén.

2 Y subió el rey a la casa del SEÑOR, y con él todos los hombres de Judá, todos los habitantes de Jerusalén, los sacerdotes, los profetas y todo el pueblo, desde el menor hasta el mayor; y leyó en su presencia todas las palabras del libro del pacto que había sido hallado en la casa del SEÑOR.

3 Después el rey se puso en pie junto a la columna e hizo pacto delante del SEÑOR de andar en pos del SEÑOR y de guardar sus mandamientos, sus testimonios y sus estatutos con todo su corazón y con toda su alma, para cumplir las palabras de este pacto escritas en este libro. Y todo el pueblo confirmó el pacto.

4 Entonces el rey ordenó que el sumo sacerdote Hilcías y los sacerdotes de segundo orden y los guardianes del umbral, sacaran del templo del SEÑOR todas las vasijas que se habían hecho para Baal, para la Asera y para todo el ejército de los cielos, y los quemó fuera de Jerusalén en los campos del Cedrón y llevó sus cenizas a Betel

5 Quitó a los sacerdotes idólatras que los reyes de Judá habían nombrado para quemar incienso en los lugares altos en las ciudades de Judá y en los alrededores de Jerusalén, también a los que quemaban incienso a Baal, al sol y a la luna, a las constelaciones y a todo el ejército de los cielos.

6 Y sacó la Asera de la casa del SEÑOR fuera de Jerusalén, al torrente Cedrón, y la quemó junto al torrente Cedrón; la redujo a polvo y arrojó el polvo sobre los sepulcros de los hijos del pueblo.

7 También derribó las casas de los dedicados a la prostitución que estaban en la casa del SEÑOR, donde las mujeres tejían pabellones para la Asera.

8 Entonces trajo a todos los sacerdotes de las ciudades de Judá, y profanó los lugares altos donde los sacerdotes habían quemado incienso, desde Geba hasta Beerseba, y derribó los lugares altos de las puertas que estaban a la entrada de la puerta de Josué, gobernador de la ciudad, a la izquierda de la puerta de la ciudad.

9 Sin embargo, los sacerdotes de los lugares altos no podían subir al altar del SEÑOR en Jerusalén, sino que comían panes sin levadura entre sus hermanos.

10 También profanó al Tofet que está en el valle de Ben-hinom, para que nadie hiciera pasar por fuego a su hijo o a su hija para honrar a Moloc.

11 A la entrada de la casa del SEÑOR, junto a la cámara de Natán-melec, el oficial que estaba en las dependencias, quitó los caballos que los reyes de Judá habían dedicado al sol, y prendió fuego a los carros del sol.

12 Y los altares que estaban sobre el techo, el aposento alto de Acaz que habían hecho los reyes de Judá, y los altares que había hecho Manasés en los dos atrios de la casa del SEÑOR el rey los derribó, los destrozó allí y arrojó su polvo al torrente Cedrón.

13 El rey también profanó los lugares altos que estaban frente a Jerusalén, los que estaban a la derecha del monte de destrucción, que Salomón, rey de Israel, había edificado a Astoret, abominación de los sidonios, y a Quemos, abominación de Moab, y a Milcom, ídolo abominable de los hijos de Amón.

14 Asimismo hizo pedazos los pilares sagrados, derribó las Aseras y llenó sus lugares con huesos humanos

15 Además, derribó el altar que estaba en Betel y el lugar alto que había hecho Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel, o sea, derribó también aquel altar y el lugar alto, destruyó sus piedras, las redujo a polvo y quemó la Asera.

16 Al volverse Josías, vio los sepulcros que estaban allí en el monte, y envió a recoger los huesos de los sepulcros y los quemó sobre el altar, profanándolo, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR que había proclamado el hombre de Dios que había anunciado estas cosas.

17 Entonces dijo: ¿Qué monumento es éste que veo? Y los hombres de la ciudad le dijeron: Es el sepulcro del hombre de Dios que vino de Judá y proclamó estas cosas que has hecho contra el altar de Betel.

18 Y él dijo: Dejadlo en paz; que nadie moleste sus huesos. Así dejaron sus huesos intactos con los huesos del profeta que vino de Samaria.

19 Josías quitó también todas las casas de los lugares altos que estaban en las ciudades de Samaria, las cuales habían hecho los reyes de Israel provocando a ira al SEÑOR ; les hizo tal y como había hecho en Betel

20 Y mató sobre los altares a todos los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que estaban allí, y quemó huesos humanos sobre ellos. Y regresó a Jerusalén.

21 Entonces el rey ordenó a todo el pueblo, diciendo: Celebrad la Pascua al SEÑOR vuestro Dios como está escrito en este libro del pacto

22 En verdad que tal Pascua no se había celebrado desde los días de los jueces que gobernaban a Israel, ni en ninguno de los días de los reyes de Israel y de los reyes de Judá.

23 Sólo en el año dieciocho del rey Josías fue celebrada esta Pascua al SEÑOR en Jerusalén.

24 Josías también quitó los médium y los espiritistas, los ídolos domésticos y los otros ídolos, y todas las abominaciones que se veían en la tierra de Judá y en Jerusalén, con el fin de confirmar las palabras de la ley que estaban escritas en el libro que el sacerdote Hilcías había hallado en la casa del SEÑOR.

25 Y antes de él no hubo rey como él que se volviera al SEÑOR con todo su corazón, con toda su alma y con todas sus fuerzas, conforme a toda la ley de Moisés, ni otro como él se levantó después de él.

26 Sin embargo, el SEÑOR no desistió del furor de su gran ira, ya que ardía su ira contra Judá a causa de todas las provocaciones con que Manasés le había provocado.

27 Y el SEÑOR dijo: También quitaré a Judá de mi presencia, como he quitado a Israel. Y desecharé a esta ciudad que yo había escogido, a Jerusalén, y al templo del cual dije: "Mi nombre estará allí."

28 Los demás hechos de Josías y todo lo que hizo, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Judá?

29 En sus días subió Faraón Necao, rey de Egipto, contra el rey de Asiria junto al río Eufrates. Y el rey Josías fue a su encuentro, pero Faraón Necao lo mató en Meguido en cuanto lo vio.

30 Sus siervos llevaron su cuerpo en carro desde Meguido, lo trajeron a Jerusalén y lo sepultaron en su sepulcro. Entonces el pueblo de aquella tierra tomó a Joacaz, hijo de Josías, y lo ungieron y lo hicieron rey en lugar de su padre.

31 Joacaz tenía veintitrés años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó tres meses en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Hamutal, hija de Jeremías, de Libna.

32 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, conforme a todo lo que habían hecho sus padres.

33 Y Faraón Necao lo puso en prisión en Ribla, en la tierra de Hamat, para que no reinara en Jerusalén; e impuso una multa sobre la tierra de cien talentos de plata y un talento de oro.

34 Faraón Necao hizo rey a Eliaquim, hijo de Josías, en lugar de Josías su padre, y cambió su nombre por el de Joacim. Pero tomó a Joacaz y lo llevó a Egipto, y allí murió.

35 Y Joacim dio la plata y el oro a Faraón, e impuso contribuciones al país para entregar el dinero conforme al mandato de Faraón. Exigió la plata y el oro del pueblo de la tierra, a cada uno conforme a sus bienes, para dárselo a Faraón Necao.

36 Joacim tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó once años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Zebuda, hija de Pedaías, de Ruma

1 The king acted immediately, assembling all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

2 Then the king proceeded to The Temple of God, bringing everyone in his train - priests and prophets and people ranging from the famous to the unknown. Then he read out publicly everything written in the Book of the Covenant that was found in The Temple of God.

3 The king stood by the pillar and before God solemnly committed them all to the covenant: to follow God believingly and obediently; to follow his instructions, heart and soul, on what to believe and do; to put into practice the entire covenant, all that was written in the book. The people stood in affirmation; their commitment was unanimous.

4 Then the king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, his associate priest, and The Temple sentries to clean house - to get rid of everything in The Temple of God that had been made for worshiping Baal and Asherah and the cosmic powers. He had them burned outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and then disposed of the ashes in Bethel

5 He fired the pagan priests whom the kings of Judah had hired to supervise the local sex-and-religion shrines in the towns of Judah and neighborhoods of Jerusalem. In a stroke he swept the country clean of the polluting stench of the round-the-clock worship of Baal, sun and moon, stars - all the so-called cosmic powers.

6 He took the obscene phallic Asherah pole from The Temple of God to the Valley of Kidron outside Jerusalem, burned it up, then ground up the ashes and scattered them in the cemetery.

7 He tore out the rooms of the male sacred prostitutes that had been set up in The Temple of God; women also used these rooms for weavings for Asherah.

8 He swept the outlying towns of Judah clean of priests and smashed the sex-and-religion shrines where they worked their trade from one end of the country to the other - all the way from Geba to Beersheba. He smashed the sex-and-religion shrine that had been set up just to the left of the city gate for the private use of Joshua, the city mayor.

9 Even though these sex-and-religion priests did not defile the Altar in The Temple itself, they were part of the general priestly corruption and had to go.

10 Then Josiah demolished the Topheth, the iron furnace griddle set up in the Valley of Ben Hinnom for sacrificing children in the fire. No longer could anyone burn son or daughter to the god Molech.

11 He hauled off the horse statues honoring the sun god that the kings of Judah had set up near the entrance to The Temple. They were in the courtyard next to the office of Nathan-Melech, the warden. He burned up the sun-chariots as so much rubbish.

12 The king smashed all the altars to smithereens - the altar on the roof shrine of Ahaz, the various altars the kings of Judah had made, the altars of Manasseh that littered the courtyard of The Temple - he smashed them all, pulverized the fragments, and scattered their dust in the Valley of Kidron.

13 The king proceeded to make a clean sweep of all the sex-and-religion shrines that had proliferated east of Jerusalem on the south slope of Abomination Hill, the ones Solomon king of Israel had built to the obscene Sidonian sex goddess Ashtoreth, to Chemosh the dirty-old-god of the Moabites, and to Milcom the depraved god of the Ammonites.

14 He tore apart the altars, chopped down the phallic Asherah-poles, and scattered old bones over the sites

15 Next, he took care of the altar at the shrine in Bethel that Jeroboam son of Nebat had built - the same Jeroboam who had led Israel into a life of sin. He tore apart the altar, burned down the shrine leaving it in ashes, and then lit fire to the phallic Asherah-pole.

16 As Josiah looked over the scene, he noticed the tombs on the hillside. He ordered the bones removed from the tombs and had them cremated on the ruined altars, desacralizing the evil altars. This was a fulfillment of the word of God spoken by the Holy Man years before when Jeroboam had stood by the altar at the sacred convocation.

17 Then the king said, "And that memorial stone - whose is that?" The men from the city said, "That's the grave of the Holy Man who spoke the message against the altar at Bethel that you have just fulfilled."

18 Josiah said, "Don't trouble his bones." So they left his bones undisturbed, along with the bones of the prophet from Samaria.

19 But Josiah hadn't finished. He now moved through all the towns of Samaria where the kings of Israel had built neighborhood sex-and-religion shrines, shrines that had so angered God. He tore the shrines down and left them in ruins - just as at Bethel

20 He killed all the priests who had conducted the sacrifices and cremated them on their own altars, thus desacralizing the altars. Only then did Josiah return to Jerusalem.

21 The king now commanded the people, "Celebrate the Passover to God, your God, exactly as directed in this Book of the Covenant.

22 This commanded Passover had not been celebrated since the days that the judges judged Israel - none of the kings of Israel and Judah had celebrated it.

23 But in the eighteenth year of the rule of King Josiah this very Passover was celebrated to God in Jerusalem.

24 Josiah scrubbed the place clean and trashed spirit-mediums, sorcerers, domestic gods, and carved figures - all the vast accumulation of foul and obscene relics and images on display everywhere you looked in Judah and Jerusalem. Josiah did this in obedience to the words of God's Revelation written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in The Temple of God.

25 There was no king to compare with Josiah - neither before nor after - a king who turned in total and repentant obedience to God, heart and mind and strength, following the instructions revealed to and written by Moses. The world would never again see a king like Josiah.

26 But despite Josiah, God's hot anger did not cool; the raging anger ignited by Manasseh burned unchecked.

27 And God, not swerving in his judgment, gave sentence: "I'll remove Judah from my presence in the same way I removed Israel. I'll turn my back on this city, Jerusalem, that I chose, and even from this Temple of which I said, 'My Name lives here.'"

28 The rest of the life and times of Josiah is written in The Chronicles of the Kings of Judah.

29 Josiah's death came about when Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt marched out to join forces with the king of Assyria at the Euphrates River. When King Josiah intercepted him at the Plain of Megiddo, Neco killed him.

30 Josiah's servants took his body in a chariot, returned him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. By popular choice Jehoahaz son of Josiah was anointed and succeeded his father as king.

31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to rule. He was king in Jerusalem for a mere three months. His mother's name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah. She came from Libnah.

32 In God's opinion, he was an evil king, reverting to the evil ways of his ancestors.

33 Pharaoh Neco captured Jehoahaz at Riblah in the country of Hamath and put him in chains, preventing him from ruling in Jerusalem. He demanded that Judah pay tribute of nearly four tons of silver and seventy-five pounds of gold.

34 Then Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of Josiah the successor to Josiah, but changed his name to Jehoiakim. Jehoahaz was carted off to Egypt and eventually died there.

35 Meanwhile Jehoiakim, like a good puppet, dutifully paid out the silver and gold demanded by Pharaoh. He scraped up the money by gouging the people, making everyone pay an assessed tax.

36 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to rule; he was king for eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah. She had come from Rumah

37 In God's opinion he was an evil king, picking up on the evil ways of his ancestors.
