1 Y envió el SEÑOR a Natán ante David, el cual viniendo a él, le dijo: Había dos hombres en una ciudad, el uno rico, y el otro pobre

2 El rico tenía numerosas ovejas y vacas

3 mas el pobre no tenía más que una sola cordera, que él había comprado y criado, y que había crecido con él y con sus hijos juntamente, comiendo de su bocado, y bebiendo de su vaso, y durmiendo en su seno; y la tenía como a una hija

4 Y vino uno de camino al hombre rico; y él no quiso tomar de sus ovejas y de sus vacas, para guisar al caminante que había venido, sino <em>que</em> tomó la oveja de aquel hombre pobre, y la aderezó para el varón que había venido

5 Entonces se encendió el furor de David en gran manera contra aquel hombre, y dijo a Natán: Vive el SEÑOR, que el que tal hizo es digno de muerte

6 y que él pagará la cordera con cuatro tantos, porque hizo tal cosa, y no tuvo pesar

7 Entonces dijo Natán a David: Tú <em>eres</em> aquel varón. Así dijo el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel: Yo te ungí por rey sobre Israel, y te libré de la mano de Saúl

8 yo te di la casa de tu señor, y las mujeres de tu señor en tu seno; además de esto te di la casa de Israel y de Judá. Y si <em>esto es</em> poco, yo te añadiré tales y tales cosas

9 ¿Por qué pues tuviste en poco la palabra del SEÑOR, haciendo lo malo delante de sus ojos? A Urías <em>el</em> heteo heriste a espada, y tomaste por tu mujer a su mujer, y a él mataste con la espada de los hijos de Amón

10 Por lo cual ahora no se apartará la espada de tu casa perpetuamente; por cuanto me menospreciaste, y tomaste la mujer de Urías <em>el</em> heteo para que fuera tu mujer

11 Así dijo el SEÑOR: He aquí yo despertaré sobre ti mal de tu <em>misma</em> casa, y tomaré tus mujeres delante de tus ojos, y las daré a tu prójimo, el cual yacerá con tus mujeres a la vista de este sol

12 Porque tú lo hiciste en secreto; mas yo haré esto delante de todo Israel, y delante del sol

13 Entonces dijo David a Natán: Pequé contra el SEÑOR. Y Natán dijo a David: También el SEÑOR ha remitido tu pecado; no morirás

14 Mas por cuanto con este negocio hiciste blasfemar a los enemigos del SEÑOR, el hijo que te ha nacido morirá ciertamente

15 Y Natán se volvió a su casa. Y el SEÑOR hirió al niño que la mujer de Urías había dado a luz a David, y enfermó gravemente

16 <em>Entonces</em> rogó David a Dios por el niño; y ayunó David, y vino, y pasó la noche acostado en tierra

17 Y levantándose los ancianos de su casa fueron a él para hacerlo levantar de <em>la</em> tierra; mas él no quiso, ni comió con ellos pan

18 Y al séptimo día murió el niño; pero sus siervos no osaban hacerle saber que el niño había muerto, diciendo <em>entre sí</em>: Cuando el niño aun vivía, le hablábamos, y no quería oír nuestra voz; ¿pues cuánto más mal le hará, si le dijéremos <em>que</em> el niño ha muerto

19 Mas David viendo a sus siervos hablar entre sí, entendió que el niño había muerto; <em>por lo que</em> dijo David a sus siervos: ¿Ha muerto el niño? Y ellos respondieron: Ha muerto

20 Entonces David se levantó de tierra, y se lavó y se ungió, y mudó sus ropas, y entró a la Casa del SEÑOR, y adoró. Y después vino a su casa, y demandó, y le pusieron pan, y comió

21 Y le dijeron sus siervos: ¿Qué <em>es</em> esto que has hecho? Por el niño, viviendo aún, ayunabas y llorabas; y él muerto, <em>te</em> levantaste y comiste pan

22 Y él respondió: Viviendo aún el niño, yo ayunaba y lloraba, diciendo: ¿Quién sabe si Dios tendrá misericordia de mí, <em>de manera</em> que viva el niño

23 Mas ahora que ya ha muerto, ¿para qué he de ayunar? ¿Podré yo hacerle volver? Yo voy a él, mas él no volverá a mí

24 Y consoló David a Betsabé su mujer, y se llegó a ella, durmió con ella; y dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Salomón <em>(pacífico)</em>, al cual amó el SEÑOR

25 y envió por mano de Natán profeta, y llamó su nombre Jedidías, {Heb. Amado del SEÑOR} por el SEÑOR

26 Y Joab peleaba contra Rabá de los hijos de Amón, y tomó la ciudad real

27 <em>Entonces</em> envió Joab mensajeros a David, diciendo: Yo he peleado contra Rabá, y he tomado la ciudad de las aguas

28 Junta pues ahora el pueblo que queda, y asienta campamento contra la ciudad, y tómala; para que tomando yo la ciudad, no se llame de mi nombre

29 Y juntando David todo el pueblo fue contra Rabá, y la combatió, y la tomó

30 Y tomó la corona de su rey de su cabeza, la cual pesaba un talento de oro, y <em>tenía</em> piedras preciosas; y fue <em>puesta</em> sobre la cabeza de David. Y trajo muy grande despojo de la ciudad

31 Y sacó el pueblo que <em>estaba</em> en ella, y lo puso debajo de sierras, y de trillos de hierro, y de hachas de hierro; y los hizo pasar por hornos de ladrillos; y lo mismo hizo a todas las ciudades de los hijos de Amón. Se volvió luego David con todo el pueblo a Jerusalén

1 The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.

2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle,

3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.

4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”

5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this must die!

6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.”

7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

8 I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.

9 Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

11 “This is what the LORD says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.

12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’ ”

13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.

14 But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the LORD, the son born to you will die.”

15 After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill.

16 David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth on the ground.

17 The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them.

18 On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.”

19 David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized the child was dead. “Is the child dead?” he asked. “Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”

20 Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.

21 His attendants asked him, “Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!”

22 He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.’

23 But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The LORD loved him;

25 and because the LORD loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.

26 Meanwhile Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal citadel.

27 Joab then sent messengers to David, saying, “I have fought against Rabbah and taken its water supply.

28 Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will take the city, and it will be named after me.”

29 So David mustered the entire army and went to Rabbah, and attacked and captured it.

30 David took the crown from their king’s head, and it was placed on his own head. It weighed a talent of gold, and it was set with precious stones. David took a great quantity of plunder from the city

31 and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes, and he made them work at brickmaking. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then he and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
