2 Samuel 13

1 Después de esto aconteció que teniendo Absalón, hijo de David, una hermana muy hermosa que se llamaba Tamar, se enamoró de ella Amnón, hijo de David.

2 Y Amnón estaba tan atormentado a causa de su hermana Tamar que se enfermó, porque ella era virgen, y le parecía difícil a Amnón hacerle cosa alguna.

3 Pero Amnón tenía un amigo que se llamaba Jonadab, hijo de Simea, hermano de David; y Jonadab era un hombre muy astuto.

4 Y éste le dijo: Hijo del rey, ¿por qué estás tan deprimido día tras día? ¿No me lo contarás? Y Amnón le dijo: Estoy enamorado de Tamar, hermana de mi hermano Absalón.

5 Entonces Jonadab le dijo: Acuéstate en tu cama, y finge que estás enfermo; y cuando tu padre venga a verte, dile: "Te ruego que dejes que mi hermana Tamar venga y me dé algún alimento para comer, y que prepare la comida delante de mí para que yo la vea y la coma de su mano."

6 Amnón se acostó y se fingió enfermo. Cuando el rey vino a verlo, Amnón dijo al rey: Te ruego que venga mi hermana Tamar y haga dos tortas delante de mí para que yo coma de su mano.

7 Y David envió mensaje a Tamar, a su casa, diciendo: Ve ahora a la casa de tu hermano Amnón, y prepárale la comida.

8 Fue, pues, Tamar a la casa de su hermano Amnón, y él estaba acostado. Y ella tomó masa, la amasó, hizo tortas delante de él y las coció.

9 Y tomando la sartén, las sirvió delante de él, pero él rehusó comer. Y Amnón dijo: Que salgan todos de aquí. Y todos salieron de allí.

10 Entonces Amnón dijo a Tamar: Trae la comida a la alcoba para que yo coma de tu mano. Y Tamar tomó las tortas que había hecho y las llevó a su hermano Amnón a la alcoba.

11 Cuando ella se las llevó para que comiera, él le echó mano, y le dijo: Ven, acuéstate conmigo, hermana mía.

12 Pero ella le respondió: No, hermano mío, no abuses de mí, porque tal cosa no se hace en Israel; no cometas esta infamia.

13 Pues, ¿adónde iría yo con mi deshonra? Y tú serías como uno de los insensatos de Israel. Ahora pues, te ruego que hables al rey, que él no me negará a ti.

14 Pero él no quiso escucharla; como era más fuerte que ella, la forzó, y se acostó con ella.

15 Entonces Amnón la aborreció con un odio muy grande; porque el odio con que la aborreció fue mayor que el amor con que la había amado. Y Amnón le dijo: Levántate, vete.

16 Pero ella le respondió: No, porque esta injusticia que me haces, echándome fuera, es mayor que la otra que me has hecho. Mas él no quiso oírla.

17 Llamó, pues, a su criado que le servía y le dijo: Echa a esta mujer fuera de aquí, y cierra la puerta tras ella.

18 (Llevaba ella un vestido de manga larga, porque así se vestían con túnicas las hijas vírgenes del rey.) Su criado la echó fuera, y cerró la puerta tras ella.

19 Entonces Tamar se puso ceniza sobre la cabeza, rasgó el vestido de manga larga que llevaba puesto, y se fue gritando con las manos sobre la cabeza.

20 Su hermano Absalón le dijo: ¿Ha estado contigo tu hermano Amnón? Guarda silencio ahora, hermana mía; tu hermano es; no se angustie tu corazón por este asunto. Tamar, pues, se quedó desconsolada en casa de su hermano Absalón.

21 Cuando el rey David se enteró de todas estas cosas, se enojó mucho.

22 Pero Absalón no le habló a Amnón ni bien ni mal; pues Absalón odiaba a Amnón, porque había violado a su hermana Tamar.

23 Después de dos años, aconteció que teniendo Absalón esquiladores de ovejas en Baal-hazor, que está junto a Efraín, Absalón invitó a todos los hijos del rey.

24 Y vino Absalón al rey y dijo: He aquí, ahora tu siervo tiene esquiladores de ovejas; ruego que venga el rey y sus siervos con tu siervo.

25 Mas el rey respondió a Absalón: No, hijo mío, no debemos ir todos, para no ser carga para ti. Y aunque le insistió, no quiso ir, mas lo bendijo.

26 Entonces Absalón dijo: Pues si no, te ruego que dejes ir a mi hermano Amnón con nosotros. Y el rey le respondió: ¿Por qué ha de ir contigo?

27 Mas cuando Absalón le insistió, dejó ir con él a Amnón y a todos los hijos del rey.

28 Absalón ordenó a sus siervos, diciendo: Mirad, cuando el corazón de Amnón esté alegre por el vino, y cuando yo os diga: "Herid a Amnón", entonces matadle. No temáis; ¿no os lo he mandado yo? Tened ánimo y sed valientes.

29 Y los siervos de Absalón hicieron a Amnón tal como Absalón les había mandado. Entonces todos los hijos del rey se levantaron, y montándose cada uno en su mulo, huyeron.

30 Estando aún ellos en el camino, llegó a David el rumor que decía: Absalón ha dado muerte a todos los hijos del rey, y no ha quedado ni uno de ellos.

31 Entonces el rey se levantó, rasgó sus vestidos y se echó en tierra; y todos sus siervos estaban a su lado con los vestidos rasgados.

32 Y Jonadab, hijo de Simea, hermano de David, dijo: No crea mi señor que han dado muerte a todos los jóvenes, hijos del rey, pues sólo ha muerto Amnón; porque esto había sido determinado por decisión de Absalón desde el día en que Amnón violó a su hermana Tamar.

33 Ahora pues, no tome en serio mi señor el rey el rumor que dice: "todos los hijos del rey murieron", porque sólo Amnón ha muerto.

34 Entre tanto Absalón había huido. Y el joven que estaba de atalaya alzó los ojos y miró, y he aquí, mucha gente que venía por el camino que estaba a sus espaldas del lado del monte.

35 Y Jonadab dijo al rey: He aquí, son los hijos del rey que vienen; conforme a la palabra de tu siervo, así ha sucedido.

36 Y aconteció que apenas había acabado de hablar, he aquí, los hijos del rey llegaron, alzaron su voz y lloraron; y también el rey y todos sus siervos lloraron muy amargamente.

37 Huyó Absalón y fue a Talmai, hijo de Amiud, rey de Gesur. Y David lloraba por su hijo todos los días.

38 Así fue que Absalón huyó a Gesur, y estuvo allí tres años.

39 Y el rey David ansiaba ir adonde estaba Absalón, pues con respecto a Amnón que había muerto, ya se había consolado.

1 Some time later, this happened: Absalom, David's son, had a sister who was very attractive. Her name was Tamar. Amnon, also David's son, was in love with her.

2 Amnon was obsessed with his sister Tamar to the point of making himself sick over her. She was a virgin, so he couldn't see how he could get his hands on her.

3 Amnon had a good friend, Jonadab, the son of David's brother Shimeah. Jonadab was exceptionally streetwise.

4 He said to Amnon, "Why are you moping around like this, day after day - you, the son of the king! Tell me what's eating at you." "In a word, Tamar," said Amnon. "My brother Absalom's sister. I'm in love with her."

5 "Here's what you do," said Jonadab. "Go to bed and pretend you're sick. When your father comes to visit you, say, 'Have my sister Tamar come and prepare some supper for me here where I can watch her and she can feed me.'"

6 So Amnon took to his bed and acted sick. When the king came to visit, Amnon said, "Would you do me a favor? Have my sister Tamar come and make some nourishing dumplings here where I can watch her and be fed by her."

7 David sent word to Tamar who was home at the time: "Go to the house of your brother Amnon and prepare a meal for him."

8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house. She took dough, kneaded it, formed it into dumplings, and cooked them while he watched from his bed.

9 But when she took the cooking pot and served him, he wouldn't eat.

10 Then he said to Tamar, "Bring the food into my bedroom, where we can eat in privacy." She took the nourishing dumplings she had prepared and brought them to her brother Amnon in his bedroom.

11 But when she got ready to feed him, he grabbed her and said, "Come to bed with me, sister!"

12 "No, brother!" she said, "Don't hurt me! This kind of thing isn't done in Israel! Don't do this terrible thing!

13 Where could I ever show my face? And you - you'll be out on the street in disgrace. Oh, please! Speak to the king - he'll let you marry me."

14 But he wouldn't listen. Being much stronger than she, he raped her.

15 No sooner had Amnon raped her than he hated her - an immense hatred. The hatred that he felt for her was greater than the love he'd had for her. "Get up," he said, "and get out!"

16 "Oh no, brother," she said. "Please! This is an even worse evil than what you just did to me!"

17 He called for his valet. "Get rid of this woman. Get her out of my sight! And lock the door after her."

18 The valet threw her out and locked the door behind her.

19 Tamar poured ashes on her head, then she ripped the long-sleeved gown, held her head in her hands, and walked away, sobbing as she went.

20 Her brother Absalom said to her, "Has your brother Amnon had his way with you? Now, my dear sister, let's keep it quiet - a family matter. He is, after all, your brother. Don't take this so hard." Tamar lived in her brother Absalom's home, bitter and desolate.

21 King David heard the whole story and was enraged,

22 but he didn't discipline Amnon. David doted on him because he was his firstborn. Absalom quit speaking to Amnon - not a word, whether good or bad - because he hated him for violating his sister Tamar.

23 Two years went by. One day Absalom threw a sheep-shearing party in Baal Hazor in the vicinity of Ephraim and invited all the king's sons.

24 He also went to the king and invited him. "Look, I'm throwing a sheep-shearing party. Come, and bring your servants."

25 But the king said, "No, son - not this time, and not the whole household. We'd just be a burden to you." Absalom pushed, but David wouldn't budge. But he did give him his blessing.

26 Then Absalom said, "Well, if you won't come, at least let my brother Amnon come."

27 But Absalom was so insistent that he gave in and let Amnon and all the rest of the king's sons go.

28 Absalom prepared a banquet fit for a king. Then he instructed his servants, "Look sharp, now. When Amnon is well into the sauce and feeling no pain, and I give the order 'Strike Amnon,' kill him. And don't be afraid - I'm the one giving the command. Courage! You can do it!"

29 Absalom's servants did to Amnon exactly what their master ordered. All the king's sons got out as fast as they could, jumped on their mules, and rode off.

30 While they were still on the road, a rumor came to the king: "Absalom just killed all the king's sons - not one is left!"

31 The king stood up, ripped his clothes to shreds, and threw himself on the floor. All his servants who were standing around at the time did the same.

32 Just then, Jonadab, his brother Shimeah's son, stepped up. "My master must not think that all the young men, the king's sons, are dead. Only Amnon is dead. This happened because of Absalom's outrage since the day that Amnon violated his sister Tamar.

33 So my master, the king, mustn't make things worse than they are, thinking that all your sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead."

34 Absalom fled. Just then the sentry on duty looked up and saw a cloud of dust on the road from Horonaim alongside the mountain. He came and told the king, "I've just seen a bunch of men on the Horonaim road, coming around the mountain."

35 Then Jonadab exclaimed to the king, "See! It's the king's sons coming, just as I said!"

36 He had no sooner said the words than the king's sons burst in - loud laments and weeping! The king joined in, along with all the servants - loud weeping, many tears.

37 David mourned the death of his son a long time.

38 He was there three years.

39 The king finally gave up trying to get back at Absalom. He had come to terms with Amnon's death.
