1 Ahitofel dijo a Absalón: Te ruego que me dejes escoger doce mil hombres, y esta noche me levantaré y perseguiré a David;

2 caeré sobre él cuando esté cansado y fatigado, le infundiré terror y huirá todo el pueblo que está con él; entonces heriré al rey solamente,

3 y haré volver a ti a todo el pueblo. El regreso de todos depende del hombre a quien buscas; después todo el pueblo estará en paz.

4 Y el plan agradó a Absalón y a todos los ancianos de Israel.

5 Entonces Absalón dijo: Llama también ahora a Husai arquita y escuchemos lo que él tiene que decir.

6 Cuando Husai vino a Absalón, éste le dijo: Ahitofel ha hablado de esta manera, ¿Llevaremos a cabo su plan? Si no, habla.

7 Y Husai dijo a Absalón: Esta vez el consejo que Ahitofel ha dado no es bueno.

8 Dijo además Husai: Tú conoces a tu padre y a sus hombres, que son hombres valientes y que están enfurecidos como una osa privada de sus cachorros en el campo. Tu padre es un experto en la guerra, y no pasará la noche con el pueblo.

9 He aquí, él ahora se habrá escondido en una de las cuevas o en algún otro lugar; y sucederá que si en el primer asalto caen algunos de los tuyos, cualquiera que se entere, dirá: "Ha habido una matanza en el pueblo que sigue a Absalón."

10 Y aun el valiente, cuyo corazón es como el corazón de un león, se desanimará completamente, pues todo Israel sabe que tu padre es un hombre poderoso y que todos los que están con él son valientes.

11 Pero yo aconsejo que todo Israel se reúna contigo, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, abundantes como la arena que está a la orilla del mar, y que tú personalmente vayas al combate.

12 Iremos a él en cualquiera de los lugares donde se encuentre, y descenderemos sobre él como cae el rocío sobre la tierra; y de él y de todos los hombres que están con él no quedará ni uno.

13 Si se refugia en una ciudad, todo Israel traerá sogas a aquella ciudad y la arrastraremos al valle hasta que no se encuentre en ella ni una piedra pequeña.

14 Absalón y todos los hombres de Israel dijeron: El consejo de Husai arquita es mejor que el consejo de Ahitofel. Pues el SEÑOR había ordenado que se frustrara el buen consejo de Ahitofel para que el SEÑOR trajera calamidad sobre Absalón.

15 Dijo después Husai a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar: Esto es lo que Ahitofel aconsejó a Absalón y a los ancianos de Israel, y esto es lo que yo he aconsejado.

16 Ahora pues, enviad inmediatamente y avisad a David, diciendo: No pases la noche en los vados del desierto sino pasa al otro lado sin falta, no sea que el rey y el pueblo que está con él sean destruidos.

17 Y Jonatán y Ahimaas aguardaban en En-rogel ; una criada iría a avisarles y ellos irían a avisar al rey David, porque no debían verse entrando a la ciudad.

18 Pero un muchacho los vio y avisó a Absalón; así que los dos salieron rápidamente y fueron a la casa de un hombre en Bahurim que tenía un pozo en su patio, al cual descendieron.

19 Y tomando la mujer una manta, la extendió sobre la boca del pozo y esparció grano sobre ella, de modo que nada se notaba.

20 Entonces los siervos de Absalón fueron a la casa de la mujer y dijeron: ¿Dónde están Ahimaas y Jonatán? Y la mujer les dijo: Ellos han pasado el arroyo. Buscaron, y al no encontrarlos, regresaron a Jerusalén.

21 Sucedió que después que se habían ido, salieron del pozo, y fueron y dieron aviso al rey David, diciéndole: Levantaos y pasad aprisa las aguas, porque así Ahitofel ha aconsejado contra vosotros.

22 Entonces David y todo el pueblo que estaba con él se levantaron y pasaron el Jordán; ya al amanecer no quedaba ninguno que no hubiera pasado el Jordán.

23 Viendo Ahitofel que no habían seguido su consejo, aparejó su asno, se levantó y fue a su casa, a su ciudad, puso en orden su casa y se ahorcó. Así murió, y fue sepultado en la tumba de su padre.

24 Llegando David a Mahanaim, Absalón pasó el Jordán y con él todos los hombres de Israel.

25 Absalón nombró a Amasa jefe del ejército en lugar de Joab. Amasa era hijo de un hombre que se llamaba Itra, israelita, el cual se había llegado a Abigail, hija de Nahas, hermana de Sarvia, madre de Joab.

26 Y acampó Israel con Absalón en la tierra de Galaad.

27 Cuando David llegó a Mahanaim, Sobi, hijo de Nahas de Rabá, de los hijos de Amnón, Maquir, hijo de Amiel de Lodebar, y Barzilai galaadita de Rogelim,

28 trajeron camas, copas, vasijas de barro, trigo, cebada, harina, grano tostado, habas, lentejas, semillas tostadas,

29 miel, cuajada, ovejas, y queso de vaca, para que comieran David y el pueblo que estaba con él, pues decían: El pueblo está hambriento, cansado y sediento en el desierto.

1 Next Ahithophel advised Absalom, "Let me handpick twelve thousand men and go after David tonight.

2 I'll come on him when he's bone tired and take him by complete surprise. The whole army will run off and I'll kill only David.

3 Then I'll bring the army back to you - a bride brought back to her husband! You're only after one man, after all. Then everyone will be together in peace!"

4 Absalom thought it was an excellent strategy, and all the elders of Israel agreed.

5 But then Absalom said, "Call in Hushai the Arkite - let's hear what he has to say."

6 So Hushai came and Absalom put it to him, "This is what Ahithophel advised. Should we do it? What do you say?"

7 Hushai said, "The counsel that Ahithophel has given in this instance is not good.

8 You know your father and his men, brave and bitterly angry - like a bear robbed of her cubs. And your father is an experienced fighter; you can be sure he won't be caught napping at a time like this.

9 Even while we're talking, he's probably holed up in some cave or other. If he jumps your men from ambush, word will soon get back, 'A slaughter of Absalom's army!'

10 Even if your men are valiant with hearts of lions, they'll fall apart at such news, for everyone in Israel knows the kind of fighting stuff your father's made of, and also the men with him.

11 "Here's what I'd advise: Muster the whole country, from Dan to Beersheba, an army like the sand of the sea, and you personally lead them.

12 We'll smoke him out wherever he is, fall on him like dew falls on the earth, and, believe me, there won't be a single survivor.

13 If he hides out in a city, then the whole army will bring ropes to that city and pull it down and into a gully - not so much as a pebble left of it!"

14 Absalom and all his company agreed that the counsel of Hushai the Arkite was better than the counsel of Ahithophel. (God had determined to discredit the counsel of Ahithophel so as to bring ruin on Absalom.)

15 Then Hushai told the priests Zadok and Abiathar, "Ahithophel advised Absalom and the elders of Israel thus and thus, and I advised them thus and thus.

16 Now send this message as quickly as possible to David: 'Don't spend the night on this side of the river; cross immediately or the king and everyone with him will be swallowed up alive.'"

17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting around at En Rogel. A servant girl would come and give them messages and then they would go and tell King David, for it wasn't safe to be seen coming into the city.

18 But a soldier spotted them and told Absalom, so the two of them got out of there fast and went to a man's house in Bahurim. He had a well in his yard and they climbed into it.

19 The wife took a rug and covered the well, then spread grain on it so no one would notice anything out of the ordinary.

20 Shortly, Absalom's servants came to the woman's house and asked her, "Have you seen Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman said, "They were headed toward the river." They looked but didn't find them, and then went back to Jerusalem.

21 When the coast was clear, Ahimaaz and Jonathan climbed out of the well and went on to make their report to King David, "Get up and cross the river quickly; Ahithophel has given counsel against you!"

22 David and his whole army were soon up and moving and crossed the Jordan. As morning broke there was not a single person who had not made it across the Jordan.

23 When Ahithophel realized that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and left for his hometown. After making out his will and putting his house in order, he hanged himself and died. He was buried in the family tomb.

24 About the time David arrived at Mahanaim, Absalom crossed the Jordan, and the whole army of Israel with him.

25 Absalom had made Amasa head of the army, replacing Joab. (Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra, an Ishmaelite who had married Abigail, daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah, the mother of Joab.)

26 Israel and Absalom set camp in Gilead.

27 When David arrived at Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Ammonite Rabbah, and Makir son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim

28 brought beds and blankets, bowls and jugs filled with wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans and lentils,

29 honey, and curds and cheese from the flocks and herds. They presented all this to David and his army to eat, "because," they said, "the army must be starved and exhausted and thirsty out in this wilderness."
