The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 David sang this song to the Lord when the Lord saved him from Saul and all his other enemies.
1
David said the words of this song to ADONAI on the day ADONAI delivered him from the power of all his enemies and from the power of Sha'ul.
2 He said: "The Lord is my rock, my protection, my Savior.
2
He said: "ADONAI is my Rock, my fortress and deliverer,
3 My God is my rock. I can run to him for safety. He is my shield and my saving strength, my defender and my place of safety. The Lord saves me from those who want to harm me.
3
the God who is my Rock, in whom I find shelter, my shield, the power that saves me, my stronghold and my refuge. My savior, you have saved me from violence.
4 I will call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I will be saved from my enemies.
4
I call on ADONAI, who is worthy of praise; and I am saved from my enemies.
5 "The waves of death came around me; the deadly rivers overwhelmed me.
5
"For death's breakers were closing over me, the floods of B'liya'al terrified me,
6 The ropes of death wrapped around me. The traps of death were before me.
6
the ropes of Sh'ol were wrapped around me, the snares of death lay there before me.
7 In my trouble I called to the Lord; I cried out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my call for help reached his ears.
7
In my distress I called to ADONAI; yes, I called to my God. Out of his temple he heard my voice, and my cry entered his ears.
8 "The earth trembled and shook. The foundations of heaven began to shake. They trembled because the Lord was angry.
8
"Then the earth quaked and shook, the foundations of heaven trembled. They were shaken because he was angry.
9 Smoke came out of his nose, and burning fire came out of his mouth. Burning coals went before him.
9
Smoke arose in his nostrils; and from his mouth, devouring fire, with coals blazing from it.
10 He tore open the sky and came down with dark clouds under his feet.
10
He lowered heaven and came down with thick darkness under his feet.
11 He rode a creature with wings and flew. He raced on the wings of the wind.
11
He rode on a keruv and flew, he was seen on the wings of the wind.
12 He made darkness his shelter, surrounded by fog and clouds.
12
He made darkness his canopy around him, thick clouds in the skies dense with water.
13 Out of the brightness of his presence came flashes of lightning.
13
From the brightness before him, fiery coals flamed out.
14 The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High raised his voice.
14
"ADONAI thundered from heaven, Ha'Elyon sounded his voice.
15 He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies. His bolts of lightning confused them with fear.
15
He sent out arrows and scattered them; with lightning he routed them.
16 The Lord spoke strongly. The wind blew from his nose. Then the valleys of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the earth were seen.
16
The channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were exposed at ADONAI's rebuke, at the blast of breath from his nostrils.
17 "The Lord reached down from above and took me; he pulled me from the deep water.
17
"He sent from on high, he took me and pulled me out of deep water;
18 He saved me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me, because they were too strong for me.
18
he rescued me from my powerful enemy, from those who hated me, for they were stronger than I.
19 They attacked me at my time of trouble, but the Lord supported me.
19
They came against me on my day of calamity, but ADONAI was my support.
20 He took me to a safe place. Because he delights in me, he saved me.
20
"He brought me out to an open place; he rescued me, because he took pleasure in me.
21 "The Lord spared me because I did what was right. Because I have not done evil, he has rewarded me.
21
ADONAI rewarded me for my uprightness, he repaid me because my hands were clean.
22 I have followed the ways of the Lord; I have not done evil by turning from my God.
22
"For I have kept the ways of ADONAI, I have not done evil by leaving my God;
23 I remember all his laws and have not broken his rules.
23
for all his rulings were before me, I did not depart from his regulations.
24 I am innocent before him; I have kept myself from doing evil.
24
I was pure-hearted toward him and kept myself from my sin.
25 The Lord rewarded me because I did what was right, because I did what the Lord said was right.
25
"Hence ADONAI repaid me for my uprightness, according to my purity in his view.
26 "Lord, you are loyal to those who are loyal, and you are good to those who are good.
26
With the merciful, you are merciful; with the champion of purity, you are pure;
27 You are pure to those who are pure, but you are against those who are evil.
27
with the honest, you are honest; but with the crooked you are cunning.
28 You save the humble, but you bring down those who are proud.
28
People afflicted, you save; but when your eyes are on the haughty, you humble them.
29 Lord, you give light to my lamp. The Lord brightens the darkness around me.
29
"For you, ADONAI, are my lamp; ADONAI lights up my darkness.
30 With your help I can attack an army. With God's help I can jump over a wall.
30
With you I can run through a whole troop of men, with my God I can leap a wall.
31 "The ways of God are without fault; the Lord's words are pure. He is a shield to those who trust him.
31
"As for God, his way is perfect, the word of ADONAI has been tested by fire; he shields all who take refuge in him.
32 Who is God? Only the Lord. Who is the Rock? Only our God.
32
For who is God but ADONAI, and who is a Rock but our God?
33 God is my protection. He makes my way free from fault.
33
"God is my strength and protection; he makes my way go straight.
34 He makes me like a deer that does not stumble; he helps me stand on the steep mountains.
34
He makes me swift and sure-footed as a deer and enables me to stand on my high places.
35 He trains my hands for battle so my arms can bend a bronze bow.
35
He trains my hands for war until my arms can bend a bow of bronze;
36 You protect me with your saving shield. You have stooped to make me great.
36
You give me your shield, which is salvation; your answers make me great.
37 You give me a better way to live, so I live as you want me to.
37
You lengthen the steps I can take, yet my ankles do not turn.
38 I chased my enemies and destroyed them. I did not quit till they were destroyed.
38
"I pursued my enemies and wiped them out, without turning back until they were destroyed.
39 I destroyed and crushed them so they couldn't rise up again. They fell beneath my feet.
39
I destroyed them, crushed them; they can't get up; they have fallen under my feet.
40 You gave me strength in battle. You made my enemies bow before me.
40
"For you braced me with strength for the battle and bent down my adversaries beneath me.
41 You made my enemies turn back, and I destroyed those who hated me.
41
You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, so that I could destroy those who hate me.
42 They called for help, but no one came to save them. They called to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
42
"They looked, but there was no one to help, even to ADONAI, but he didn't answer.
43 I beat my enemies into pieces, like dust on the ground. I poured them out and walked on them like mud in the streets.
43
I pulverized them like dust on the ground, pounded and stamped on them like mud in the streets.
44 "You saved me when my people attacked me. You kept me as the leader of nations. People I never knew serve me.
44
"You also freed me from the quarrels of my people. You kept me to be the head of the nations; a people I did not know now serve me.
45 Foreigners obey me. As soon as they hear me, they obey me.
45
Foreigners come cringing to me; the moment they hear of me, they obey me.
46 They all become afraid and tremble in their hiding places.
46
Foreigners lose heart as they stagger from their fortresses.
47 "The Lord lives! Praise God, the Rock, who saves me!
47
"ADONAI is alive! Blessed is my Rock! Exalted be God, the Rock of my salvation,
48 God gives me victory over my enemies and brings people under my rule.
48
the God who gives me vengeance and makes peoples submit to me.
49 He frees me from my enemies. "You set me over those who hate me. You saved me from cruel men.
49
He brings me out from my enemies. You raise me over those who rebel against me, you rescue me from violent men.
50 So I will praise you, Lord, among the nations. I will sing praises to your name.
50
"So I give thanks to you, ADONAI, among the nations; I sing praises to your name.
51 The Lord gives great victories to his king. He is loyal to his appointed king, to David and his descendants forever."
51
He is a tower of salvation for his king; he displays grace to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever."
