1 Sucedió que cuando el rey ya moraba en su casa, y el SEÑOR le había dado descanso de sus enemigos por todos lados,

2 el rey dijo al profeta Natán: Mira, yo habito en una casa de cedro, pero el arca de Dios mora en medio de cortinas.

3 Entonces Natán dijo al rey: Ve, haz todo lo que está en tu corazón, porque el SEÑOR está contigo.

4 Y sucedió que esa misma noche la palabra del SEÑOR vino a Natán, diciendo:

5 Ve y di a mi siervo David: "Así dice el SEÑOR: "¿Eres tú el que me va a edificar una casa para morar en ella?

6 'Pues no he morado en una casa desde el día en que saqué de Egipto a los hijos de Israel hasta hoy, sino que he andado errante en una tienda, en un tabernáculo.

7 'Dondequiera que he ido con todos los hijos de Israel, ¿hablé palabra a alguna de las tribus de Israel, a la cual haya ordenado que pastoreara a mi pueblo Israel, diciendo: "¿Por qué no me habéis edificado una casa de cedro?'""

8 Ahora pues, así dirás a mi siervo David: "Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos: 'Yo te tomé del pastizal, de seguir las ovejas, para que fueras príncipe sobre mi pueblo Israel.

9 'Y he estado contigo por dondequiera que has ido y he exterminado a todos tus enemigos de delante de ti, y haré de ti un gran nombre como el nombre de los grandes que hay en la tierra.

10 'Asignaré también un lugar para mi pueblo Israel, y lo plantaré allí a fin de que habite en su propio lugar y no sea perturbado de nuevo, ni les aflijan más los malvados como antes,

11 y como desde el día en que ordené que hubiera jueces sobre mi pueblo Israel; te daré reposo de todos tus enemigos, y el SEÑOR también te hace saber que el SEÑOR te edificará una casa.

12 'Cuando tus días se cumplan y reposes con tus padres, levantaré a tu descendiente después de ti, el cual saldrá de tus entrañas, y estableceré su reino.

13 'El edificará casa a mi nombre, y yo estableceré el trono de su reino para siempre.

14 'Yo seré padre para él y él será hijo para mí. Cuando cometa iniquidad, lo corregiré con vara de hombres y con azotes de hijos de hombres,

15 pero mi misericordia no se apartará de él, como la aparté de Saúl a quien quité de delante de ti.

16 'Tu casa y tu reino permanecerán para siempre delante de mí; tu trono será establecido para siempre.'"

17 Conforme a todas estas palabras y conforme a toda esta visión, así habló Natán a David.

18 Entonces el rey David entró y se sentó delante del SEÑOR y dijo: ¿Quién soy yo, oh Señor DIOS, y qué es mi casa para que me hayas traído hasta aquí?

19 Y aun esto fue insignificante ante tus ojos, oh Señor DIOS, pues también has hablado de la casa de tu siervo concerniente a un futuro lejano. Y esta es la ley de los hombres, oh Señor DIOS.

20 ¿Y qué más podría decirte David? Pues tú conoces a tu siervo, oh Señor DIOS.

21 A causa de tu palabra, conforme a tu propio corazón, tú has hecho toda esta grandeza, para que lo sepa tu siervo.

22 Oh Señor DIOS, por eso tú eres grande; pues no hay nadie como tú, ni hay Dios fuera de ti, conforme a todo lo que hemos oído con nuestros oídos.

23 ¿Y qué otra nación en la tierra es como tu pueblo Israel, al cual viniste a redimir para ti como pueblo, a fin de darte un nombre, y hacer grandes cosas a su favor y cosas portentosas para tu tierra, ante tu pueblo que rescataste para ti de Egipto, de naciones y de sus dioses?

24 Pues tú has establecido para ti a tu pueblo Israel como pueblo tuyo para siempre, y tú, SEÑOR, has venido a ser su Dios.

25 Y ahora, oh Señor DIOS, confirma para siempre la palabra que has hablado acerca de tu siervo y acerca de su casa, y haz según has hablado.

26 Y sea engrandecido tu nombre para siempre, al decirse: "El SEÑOR de los ejércitos es Dios sobre Israel"; y que la casa de tu siervo David sea establecida delante de ti.

27 Porque tú, oh SEÑOR de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, has revelado a tu siervo, diciendo: "Yo te edificaré casa"; por tanto, tu siervo ha hallado ánimo para elevar esta oración a ti.

28 Ahora pues, oh Señor DIOS, tú eres Dios, tus palabras son verdad y tú has prometido este bien a tu siervo.

29 Y ahora, ten a bien bendecir la casa de tu siervo, a fin de que permanezca para siempre delante de ti; porque tú, oh Señor DIOS, has hablado y con tu bendición será bendita para siempre la casa de tu siervo.

The Message Bible MSG

1 Before long, the king made himself at home and God gave him peace from all his enemies.

2 Then one day King David said to Nathan the prophet, "Look at this: Here I am, comfortable in a luxurious house of cedar, and the Chest of God sits in a plain tent."

3 Nathan told the king, "Whatever is on your heart, go and do it. God is with you."

4 But that night, the word of God came to Nathan saying,

5 "Go and tell my servant David: This is God's word on the matter: You're going to build a 'house' for me to live in?

6 Why, I haven't lived in a 'house' from the time I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt till now. All that time I've moved about with nothing but a tent.

7 And in all my travels with Israel, did I ever say to any of the leaders I commanded to shepherd Israel, 'Why haven't you built me a house of cedar?'

8 "So here is what you are to tell my servant David: The God-of-the-Angel-Armies has this word for you: I took you from the pasture, tagging along after sheep, and made you prince over my people Israel.

9 I was with you everywhere you went and mowed your enemies down before you. Now I'm making you famous, to be ranked with the great names on earth.

10 And I'm going to set aside a place for my people Israel and plant them there so they'll have their own home and not be knocked around any more. Nor will evil men afflict you as they always have,

11 even during the days I set judges over my people Israel. Finally, I'm going to give you peace from all your enemies.

12 When your life is complete and you're buried with your ancestors, then I'll raise up your child, your own flesh and blood, to succeed you, and I'll firmly establish his rule.

13 He will build a house to honor me, and I will guarantee his kingdom's rule permanently.

14 I'll be a father to him, and he'll be a son to me. When he does wrong, I'll discipline him in the usual ways, the pitfalls and obstacles of this mortal life.

15 But I'll never remove my gracious love from him, as I removed it from Saul, who preceded you and whom I most certainly did remove.

16 Your family and your kingdom are permanently secured. I'm keeping my eye on them! And your royal throne will always be there, rock solid."

17 Nathan gave David a complete and accurate account of everything he heard and saw in the vision.

18 King David went in, took his place before God, and prayed: "Who am I, my Master God, and what is my family, that you have brought me to this place in life?

19 But that's nothing compared to what's coming, for you've also spoken of my family far into the future, given me a glimpse into tomorrow, my Master God!

20 What can I possibly say in the face of all this? You know me, Master God, just as I am.

21 You've done all this not because of who I am but because of who you are - out of your very heart! - but you've let me in on it.

22 "This is what makes you so great, Master God! There is none like you, no God but you, nothing to compare with what we've heard with our own ears.

23 And who is like your people, like Israel, a nation unique in the earth, whom God set out to redeem for himself (and became most famous for it), performing great and fearsome acts, throwing out nations and their gods left and right as you saved your people from Egypt?

24 You established for yourself a people - your very own Israel! - your people permanently. And you, God, became their God.

25 "So now, great God, this word that you have spoken to me and my family, guarantee it permanently! Do exactly what you've promised!

26 Then your reputation will flourish always as people exclaim, 'The God-of-the-Angel-Armies is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will remain sure and solid in your watchful presence.

27 For you, God-of-the-Angel-Armies, Israel's God, told me plainly, 'I will build you a house.' That's how I was able to find the courage to pray this prayer to you.

28 "And now, Master God, being the God you are, speaking sure words as you do, and having just said this wonderful thing to me,

29 please, just one more thing: Bless my family; keep your eye on them always. You've already as much as said that you would, Master God! Oh, may your blessing be on my family permanently!"
