Good News Translation GNT
1 But be certain of this, that in the last days times of trouble will come.
1
Remember that there will be difficult times in the last days.
2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, uplifted in pride, given to bitter words, going against the authority of their fathers, never giving praise, having no religion,
2
People will be selfish, greedy, boastful, and conceited; they will be insulting, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, and irreligious;
3 Without natural love, bitter haters, saying evil of others, violent and uncontrolled, hating all good,
3
they will be unkind, merciless, slanderers, violent, and fierce; they will hate the good;
4 False to their friends, acting without thought, lifted up in mind, loving pleasure more than God;
4
they will be treacherous, reckless, and swollen with pride; they will love pleasure rather than God;
5 Having a form of religion, but turning their backs on the power of it: go not with these.
5
they will hold to the outward form of our religion, but reject its real power. Keep away from such people.
6 For these are they who go secretly into houses, making prisoners of foolish women, weighted down with sin, turned from the way by their evil desires,
6
Some of them go into people's houses and gain control over weak women who are burdened by the guilt of their sins and driven by all kinds of desires,
7 Ever learning, and never coming to the knowledge of what is true.
7
women who are always trying to learn but who can never come to know the truth.
8 And as James and Jambres went against Moses, so do these go against what is true: men of evil minds, who, tested by faith, are seen to be false.
8
As Jannes and Jambres were opposed to Moses, so also these people are opposed to the truth - people whose minds do not function and who are failures in the faith.
9 But they will go no farther: for their foolish behaviour will be clear to all men, as theirs was in the end.
9
But they will not get very far, because everyone will see how stupid they are. That is just what happened to Jannes and Jambres.
10 But you took as your example my teaching, behaviour, purpose, and faith; my long waiting, my love, my quiet undergoing of trouble;
10
But you have followed my teaching, my conduct, and my purpose in life; you have observed my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance,
11 My punishments and pain; the things which came to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; the cruel attacks made on me: and the Lord made me free from them all.
11
my persecutions, and my sufferings. You know all that happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, the terrible persecutions I endured! But the Lord rescued me from them all.
12 Yes, and all whose purpose is to be living in the knowledge of God in Christ Jesus, will be cruelly attacked.
12
Everyone who wants to live a godly life in union with Christ Jesus will be persecuted;
13 Evil and false men will become worse and worse, using deceit and themselves overcome by deceit.
13
and evil persons and impostors will keep on going from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves.
14 But see that you keep to the teaching you have been given and the things of which you are certain, conscious of who has been your teacher;
14
But as for you, continue in the truths that you were taught and firmly believe. You know who your teachers were,
15 And that from the time when you were a child, you have had knowledge of the holy Writings, which are able to make you wise to salvation, through faith in Christ Jesus.
15
and you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 Every holy Writing which comes from God is of profit for teaching, for training, for guiding, for education in righteousness:
16
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living,
17 So that the man of God may be complete, trained and made ready for every good work.
17
so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.
