New Living Translation NLT
The Message Bible MSG
1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times.
1
Don't be naive. There are difficult times ahead.
2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.
2
As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse,
3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
3
dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical,
4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.
4
treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God.
5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!
5
They'll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they're animals. Stay clear of these people.
6 They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires.
6
These are the kind of people who smooth-talk themselves into the homes of unstable and needy women and take advantage of them; women who, depressed by their sinfulness, take up with every new religious fad that calls itself "truth."
7 (Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.)
7
They get exploited every time and never really learn.
8 These teachers oppose the truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith.
8
These men are like those old Egyptian frauds Jannes and Jambres, who challenged Moses. They were rejects from the faith, twisted in their thinking, defying truth itself.
9 But they won’t get away with this for long. Someday everyone will recognize what fools they are, just as with Jannes and Jambres.
9
But nothing will come of these latest impostors. Everyone will see through them, just as people saw through that Egyptian hoax.
10 But you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance.
10
You've been a good apprentice to me, a part of my teaching, my manner of life, direction, faith, steadiness, love, patience,
11 You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—but the Lord rescued me from all of it.
11
troubles, sufferings - suffering along with me in all the grief I had to put up with in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. And you also well know that God rescued me!
12 Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
12
Anyone who wants to live all out for Christ is in for a lot of trouble; there's no getting around it.
13 But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived.
13
Unscrupulous con men will continue to exploit the faith. They're as deceived as the people they lead astray. As long as they are out there, things can only get worse.
14 But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you.
14
But don't let it faze you. Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your teachers -
15 You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.
15
why, you took in the sacred Scriptures with your mother's milk! There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
16
Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another - showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way.
17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
17
Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.
