1 Y cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus vestidos, y se cubrió de cilicio, y entró en la Casa del SEÑOR

2 Y envió a Eliacim el mayordomo, y a Sebna escriba, y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, vestidos de cilicio a Isaías profeta hijo de Amós

3 que le dijeran: Así dijo Ezequías: Este día es día de angustia, y de reprensión, y de blasfemia; porque los hijos han venido hasta la rotura, y la que da a luz no tiene fuerzas

4 Por ventura oirá el SEÑOR tu Dios todas las palabras de Rabsaces, al cual el rey de los Asirios su señor ha enviado para injuriar al Dios vivo, y reprenderá las palabras, las cuales el SEÑOR tu Dios ha oído; por tanto, eleva oración por el remanente que aun se halla

5 Vinieron pues los siervos del rey Ezequías a Isaías

6 E Isaías les respondió: Así diréis a vuestro señor: Así dijo el SEÑOR: No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria

7 He aquí yo pongo en él <em>un</em> espíritu, y oirá rumor, y volverá a su tierra; y yo haré que en su tierra caiga a espada

8 Y regresando Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria combatiendo a Libna; porque había oído que se había ido de Laquis

9 Y oyó decir de Tirhaca rey de Etiopía: He aquí ha salido para hacerte guerra. Entonces volvió él, y envió embajadores a Ezequías, diciendo

10 Así diréis a Ezequías rey de Judá: No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, para decir: Jerusalén no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria

11 He aquí <em>tú</em> has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria a todas las tierras, destruyéndolas, ¿y has tú de escapar

12 ¿Por ventura los libraron los dioses de los gentiles, que mis padres destruyeron, <em>es a saber</em>, Gozán, Harán, Resef, y los hijos de Edén que <em>estaban</em> en Telasar

13 ¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arfad, el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena, y de Iva

14 Y tomó Ezequías las letras de mano de los embajadores; y después que las hubo leído, subió a la Casa del SEÑOR, y las extendió Ezequías delante del SEÑOR

15 Y oró Ezequías delante del SEÑOR, diciendo: SEÑOR Dios de Israel, que habitas <em>sobre</em> los querubines, tú solo eres Dios a todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra

16 Inclina, oh SEÑOR, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh SEÑOR, tus ojos, y mira; y oye las palabras de Senaquerib, que ha enviado a blasfemar al Dios viviente

17 Es verdad, oh SEÑOR, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido a los gentiles y sus tierras

18 y que pusieron en el fuego a sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no <em>eran</em> dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres, madera o piedra, y <em>así</em> los destruyeron

19 Ahora, pues, oh SEÑOR Dios nuestro, sálvanos ahora de su mano, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que tú solo eres el SEÑOR Dios

20 Entonces Isaías hijo de Amós envió a decir a Ezequías: Así dijo el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel: Lo que me rogaste acerca de Senaquerib rey de Asiria, he oído

21 Esta <em>es</em> la palabra que el SEÑOR ha hablado contra él: ¿Te ha menospreciado? ¿Te ha escarnecido, oh virgen hija de Sion? Ha movido su cabeza a tus espaldas, oh hija de Jerusalén

22 ¿A quién has injuriado y a quién has blasfemado? ¿Y contra quién has hablado alto, y has alzado en alto tus ojos? Contra el Santo de Israel

23 Por mano de tus mensajeros has proferido injuria contra el Señor, y has dicho: Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las cumbres de los montes; a las cuestas del Líbano, y cortaré sus altos cedros, sus hayas escogidas; y entraré a la morada de su término, al bosque de su Carmel

24 Yo he cavado y bebido las aguas ajenas, y he secado con la planta de mis pies todos los ríos de munición

25 ¿Nunca has oído que desde largo tiempo <em>atrás</em> la hice yo, y de días antiguos la he formado? Y ahora la he hecho venir, y será para destrucción de ciudades fuertes en montones de ruinas

26 Y sus moradores, cortos de manos, quebrantados y confusos, serán <em>cual</em> hierba del campo, <em>como</em> legumbre verde; heno de los tejados, que antes que venga a madurez es seco

27 <em>Yo</em> he sabido tu sentarte, tu salir y tu entrar, y tu furor contra mí

28 Por cuanto te has airado contra mí, y tu estruendo ha subido a mis oídos; por tanto <em>yo</em> pondré mi anzuelo en tus narices, y mi freno en tus labios, y <em>yo</em> te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste

29 Y esto te <em>será</em> por señal: Este año comerás lo que nacerá de suyo, y el segundo año lo que <em>volverá</em> a nacer de suyo; y el tercer año haréis sementera, y segaréis, y plantaréis viñas, y comeréis el fruto de ellas

30 Y lo que hubiere escapado, lo que habrá quedado de la casa de Judá, volverá a echar raíz abajo, y hará fruto arriba

31 Porque saldrán de Jerusalén remanente, y liberación desde el monte de Sion; el celo del SEÑOR de los ejércitos hará esto

32 Por tanto, el SEÑOR dice así del rey de Asiria: No entrará en esta ciudad, ni echará saeta en ella; ni vendrá delante de ella escudo, ni será echado contra ella baluarte

33 Por el camino que vino se volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad, dice el SEÑOR

34 Porque <em>yo</em> ampararé a esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor de mí, y por amor de David mi siervo

35 Y aconteció <em>que</em> la misma noche salió el ángel del SEÑOR, e hirió en el campamento de los Asirios ciento ochenta y cinco mil <em>hombres</em>; y cuando se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí los cuerpos de los muertos

36 Entonces Senaquerib, rey de Asiria partió, y se fue de allí y estuvo en Nínive

37 Y aconteció, que estando él adorando en la casa de Nisroc su dios, Adramelec y Sarezer sus hijos lo hirieron a espada; y huyeron a tierra de Ararat. Y reinó en su lugar Esar-hadón su hijo

New International Version NIV

1 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the LORD.

2 He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.

3 They told him, “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them.

4 It may be that the LORD your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the LORD your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives.”

5 When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah,

6 Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.’ ”

8 When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.

9 Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush, was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word:

10 “Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.’

11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered?

12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver them—the gods of Gozan, Harran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar?

13 Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?”

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.

15 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD: “LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.

16 Give ear, LORD, and hear; open your eyes, LORD, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.

17 “It is true, LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands.

18 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.

19 Now, LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, LORD, are God.”

20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria.

21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: “ ‘Virgin Daughter Zion despises you and mocks you. Daughter Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee.

22 Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!

23 By your messengers you have ridiculed the Lord. And you have said, “With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its junipers. I have reached its remotest parts, the finest of its forests.

24 I have dug wells in foreign lands and drunk the water there. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”

25 “ ‘Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone.

26 Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorched before it grows up.

27 “ ‘But I know where you are and when you come and go and how you rage against me.

28 Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.’

29 “This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah: “This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

30 Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above.

31 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. “The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

32 “Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: “ ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it.

33 By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city, declares the LORD.

34 I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.’ ”

35 That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!

36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.

37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.
