CEB 1 Before the Festival of Passover, Jesus knew that his time had come to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them fully. NRS 1 Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. CEB 2 Jesus and his disciples were sharing the evening meal. The devil had already provoked Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, to betray Jesus. NRS 2 The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper CEB 3 Jesus knew the Father had given everything into his hands and that he had come from God and was returning to God. NRS 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, CEB 4 So he got up from the table and took off his robes. Picking up a linen towel, he tied it around his waist. NRS 4 got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. CEB 5 Then he poured water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he was wearing. NRS 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. CEB 6 When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" NRS 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" CEB 7 Jesus replied, "You don't understand what I'm doing now, but you will understand later." NRS 7 Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." CEB 8 "No!" Peter said. "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus replied, "Unless I wash you, you won't have a place with me." NRS 8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." CEB 9 Simon Peter said, "Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and my head!" NRS 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" CEB 10 Jesus responded, "Those who have bathed need only to have their feet washed, because they are completely clean. You disciples are clean, but not every one of you." NRS 10 Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." CEB 11 He knew who would betray him. That's why he said, "Not every one of you is clean." NRS 11 For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." CEB 12 After he washed the disciples' feet, he put on his robes and returned to his place at the table. He said to them, “Do you know what I've done for you? NRS 12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? CEB 13 You call me ‘Teacher' and ‘Lord,' and you speak correctly, because I am. NRS 13 You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. CEB 14 If I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you too must wash each other's feet. NRS 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. CEB 15 I have given you an example: Just as I have done, you also must do. NRS 15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. CEB 16 I assure you, servants aren't greater than their master, nor are those who are sent greater than the one who sent them. NRS 16 Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. CEB 17 Since you know these things, you will be happy if you do them. NRS 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. CEB 18 I'm not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I've chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture, The one who eats my bread has turned against me. NRS 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But it is to fulfill the scripture, "The one who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.' CEB 19 "I'm telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I Am. NRS 19 I tell you this now, before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am he. CEB 20 I assure you that whoever receives someone I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me." NRS 20 Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me." CEB 21 After he said these things, Jesus was deeply disturbed and testified, "I assure you, one of you will betray me." NRS 21 After saying this Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, "Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me." CEB 22 His disciples looked at each other, confused about which of them he was talking about. NRS 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking. CEB 23 One of the disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was at Jesus' side. NRS 23 One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining next to him; CEB 24 Simon Peter nodded at him to get him to ask Jesus who he was talking about. NRS 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. CEB 25 Leaning back toward Jesus, this disciple asked, "Lord, who is it?" NRS 25 So while reclining next to Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" CEB 26 Jesus answered, "It's the one to whom I will give this piece of bread once I have dipped into the bowl."Then he dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son. NRS 26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. CEB 27 After Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly." NRS 27 After he received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "Do quickly what you are going to do." CEB 28 No one sitting at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. NRS 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. CEB 29 Some thought that, since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus told him, "Go, buy what we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor. NRS 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the common purse, Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival"; or, that he should give something to the poor. CEB 30 So when Judas took the bread, he left immediately. And it was night. NRS 30 So, after receiving the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. CEB 31 When Judas was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Human One has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. NRS 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. CEB 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify the Human One in himself and will glorify him immediately. NRS 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. CEB 33 Little children, I'm with you for a little while longer. You will look for me—but, just as I told the Jewish leaders, I also tell you now—‘Where I'm going, you can't come.' NRS 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, "Where I am going, you cannot come.' CEB 34 "I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, so you also must love each other. NRS 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. CEB 35 This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, when you love each other." NRS 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." CEB 36 Simon Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you can't follow me now, but you will follow later." NRS 36 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow afterward." CEB 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I'll give up my life for you." NRS 37 Peter said to him, "Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." CEB 38 Jesus replied, “Will you give up your life for me? I assure you that you will deny me three times before the rooster crows. NRS 38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly, I tell you, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times.
