Luke 1

ESV 1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, MSG 1 So many others have tried their hand at putting together a story of the wonderful harvest of Scripture and history that took place among us, ESV 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, MSG 2 using reports handed down by the original eyewitnesses who served this Word with their very lives. ESV 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, MSG 3 Since I have investigated all the reports in close detail, starting from the story's beginning, I decided to write it all out for you, most honorable Theophilus, ESV 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. MSG 4 so you can know beyond the shadow of a doubt the reliability of what you were taught. A Childless Couple Conceives ESV 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah,of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. MSG 5 During the rule of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest assigned service in the regiment of Abijah. His name was Zachariah. His wife was descended from the daughters of Aaron. Her name was Elizabeth. ESV 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. MSG 6 Together they lived honorably before God, careful in keeping to the ways of the commandments and enjoying a clear conscience before God. ESV 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. MSG 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth could never conceive, and now they were quite old. ESV 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, MSG 8 It so happened that as Zachariah was carrying out his priestly duties before God, working the shift assigned to his regiment, ESV 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. MSG 9 it came his one turn in life to enter the sanctuary of God and burn incense. ESV 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. MSG 10 The congregation was gathered and praying outside the Temple at the hour of the incense offering. ESV 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. MSG 11 Unannounced, an angel of God appeared just to the right of the altar of incense. ESV 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. MSG 12 Zachariah was paralyzed in fear. ESV 13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. MSG 13 But the angel reassured him, "Don't fear, Zachariah. Your prayer has been heard. Elizabeth, your wife, will bear a son by you. You are to name him John. ESV 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, MSG 14 You're going to leap like a gazelle for joy, and not only you - many will delight in his birth. ESV 15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. MSG 15 He'll achieve great stature with God. ESV 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, MSG 16 He will turn many sons and daughters of Israel back to their God. ESV 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." MSG 17 He will herald God's arrival in the style and strength of Elijah, soften the hearts of parents to children, and kindle devout understanding among hardened skeptics - he'll get the people ready for God." ESV 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." MSG 18 Zachariah said to the angel, "Do you expect me to believe this? I'm an old man and my wife is an old woman." ESV 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. MSG 19 But the angel said, "I am Gabriel, the sentinel of God, sent especially to bring you this glad news. ESV 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." MSG 20 But because you won't believe me, you'll be unable to say a word until the day of your son's birth. Every word I've spoken to you will come true on time - God's time." ESV 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. MSG 21 Meanwhile, the congregation waiting for Zachariah was getting restless, wondering what was keeping him so long in the sanctuary. ESV 22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. MSG 22 When he came out and couldn't speak, they knew he had seen a vision. He continued speechless and had to use sign language with the people. ESV 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. MSG 23 When the course of his priestly assignment was completed, he went back home.[ ESV 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, MSG 24 It wasn't long before his wife, Elizabeth, conceived. She went off by herself for five months, relishing her pregnancy. ESV 25 "Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people." MSG 25 "So, this is how God acts to remedy my unfortunate condition!" she said. ESV 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, MSG 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the Galilean village of Nazareth ESV 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. MSG 27 to a virgin engaged to be married to a man descended from David. His name was Joseph, and the virgin's name, Mary. ESV 28 And he came to her and said, "Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" MSG 28 Upon entering, Gabriel greeted her: Good morning! You're beautiful with God's beauty, Beautiful inside and out! God be with you. ESV 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. MSG 29 She was thoroughly shaken, wondering what was behind a greeting like that. ESV 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. MSG 30 But the angel assured her, "Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: ESV 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. MSG 31 You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus. ESV 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, MSG 32 He will be great, be called 'Son of the Highest.' The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David; ESV 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." MSG 33 He will rule Jacob's house forever - no end, ever, to his kingdom." ESV 34 And Mary said to the angel, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?" MSG 34 Mary said to the angel, "But how? I've never slept with a man." ESV 35 And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God. MSG 35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; Therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God. ESV 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. MSG 36 "And did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months' pregnant! ESV 37 For nothing will be impossible with God." MSG 37 Nothing, you see, is impossible with God." ESV 38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. MSG 38 And Mary said, Yes, I see it all now: I'm the Lord's maid, ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say. Then the angel left her. Blessed Among Women ESV 39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, MSG 39 Mary didn't waste a minute. She got up and traveled to a town in Judah in the hill country, ESV 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. MSG 40 straight to Zachariah's house, and greeted Elizabeth. ESV 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, MSG 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in her womb leaped. She was filled with the Holy Spirit, ESV 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! MSG 42 and sang out exuberantly, You're so blessed among women, and the babe in your womb, also blessed! ESV 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? MSG 43 And why am I so blessed that the mother of my Lord visits me? ESV 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. MSG 44 The moment the sound of your greeting entered my ears, The babe in my womb skipped like a lamb for sheer joy. ESV 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." MSG 45 Blessed woman, who believed what God said, believed every word would come true! ESV 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, MSG 46 And Mary said, I'm bursting with God-news; ESV 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, MSG 47 I'm dancing the song of my Savior God. ESV 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; MSG 48 God took one good look at me, and look what happened - I'm the most fortunate woman on earth! What God has done for me will never be forgotten, ESV 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. MSG 49 the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others. ESV 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. MSG 50 His mercy flows in wave after wave on those who are in awe before him. ESV 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; MSG 51 He bared his arm and showed his strength, scattered the bluffing braggarts. ESV 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; MSG 52 He knocked tyrants off their high horses, pulled victims out of the mud. ESV 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. MSG 53 The starving poor sat down to a banquet; the callous rich were left out in the cold. ESV 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, MSG 54 He embraced his chosen child, Israel; he remembered and piled on the mercies, piled them high. ESV 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever." MSG 55 It's exactly what he promised, beginning with Abraham and right up to now. ESV 56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. MSG 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months and then went back to her own home. ESV 57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. MSG 57 When Elizabeth was full-term in her pregnancy, she bore a son. ESV 58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. MSG 58 Her neighbors and relatives, seeing that God had overwhelmed her with mercy, celebrated with her. ESV 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, MSG 59 On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child and were calling him Zachariah after his father. ESV 60 but his mother answered, "No; he shall be called John." MSG 60 But his mother intervened: "No. He is to be called John." ESV 61 And they said to her, "None of your relatives is called by this name." MSG 61 "But," they said, "no one in your family is named that." ESV 62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. MSG 62 They used sign language to ask Zachariah what he wanted him named. ESV 63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And they all wondered. MSG 63 Asking for a tablet, Zachariah wrote, "His name is to be John." That took everyone by surprise. ESV 64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. MSG 64 Surprise followed surprise - Zachariah's mouth was now open, his tongue loose, and he was talking, praising God! ESV 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, MSG 65 A deep, reverential fear settled over the neighborhood, and in all that Judean hill country people talked about nothing else. ESV 66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him. MSG 66 Everyone who heard about it took it to heart, wondering, "What will become of this child? Clearly, God has his hand in this." ESV 67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, MSG 67 Then Zachariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, ESV 68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people MSG 68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he came and set his people free. ESV 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, MSG 69 He set the power of salvation in the center of our lives, and in the very house of David his servant, ESV 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, MSG 70 Just as he promised long ago through the preaching of his holy prophets: ESV 71 that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; MSG 71 Deliverance from our enemies and every hateful hand; ESV 72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, MSG 72 Mercy to our fathers, as he remembers to do what he said he'd do, ESV 73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us MSG 73 What he swore to our father Abraham - ESV 74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, MSG 74 a clean rescue from the enemy camp, So we can worship him without a care in the world, ESV 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. MSG 75 made holy before him as long as we live. ESV 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, MSG 76 And you, my child, "Prophet of the Highest," will go ahead of the Master to prepare his ways, ESV 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, MSG 77 Present the offer of salvation to his people, the forgiveness of their sins. ESV 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit usfrom on high MSG 78 Through the heartfelt mercies of our God, God's Sunrise will break in upon us, ESV 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." MSG 79 Shining on those in the darkness, those sitting in the shadow of death, Then showing us the way, one foot at a time, down the path of peace. ESV 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel. MSG 80 The child grew up, healthy and spirited. He lived out in the desert until the day he made his prophetic debut in Israel.
