CEB 1 It was two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and legal experts through cunning tricks were searching for a way to arrest Jesus and kill him. NRS 1 It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him; CEB 2 But they agreed that it shouldn't happen during the festival; otherwise, there would be an uproar among the people. NRS 2 for they said, "Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people." CEB 3 Jesus was at Bethany visiting the house of Simon, who had a skin disease. During dinner, a woman came in with a vase made of alabaster and containing very expensive perfume of pure nard. She broke open the vase and poured the perfume on his head. NRS 3 While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. CEB 4 Some grew angry. They said to each other, "Why waste the perfume? NRS 4 But some were there who said to one another in anger, "Why was the ointment wasted in this way? CEB 5 This perfume could have been sold for almost a year's pay and the money given to the poor." And they scolded her. NRS 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they scolded her. CEB 6 Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? She has done a good thing for me. NRS 6 But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me. CEB 7 You always have the poor with you; and whenever you want, you can do something good for them. But you won't always have me. NRS 7 For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. CEB 8 She has done what she could. She has anointed my body ahead of time for burial. NRS 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial. CEB 9 I tell you the truth that, wherever in the whole world the good news is announced, what she's done will also be told in memory of her." NRS 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her." CEB 10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to give Jesus up to them. NRS 10 Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. CEB 11 When they heard it, they were delighted and promised to give him money.
