Mark 3

CEB 1 Jesus returned to the synagogue. A man with a withered hand was there. NRS 1 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. CEB 2 Wanting to bring charges against Jesus, they were watching Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. NRS 2 They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. CEB 3 He said to the man with the withered hand, "Step up where people can see you." NRS 3 And he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come forward." CEB 4 Then he said to them, "Is it legal on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they said nothing. NRS 4 Then he said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?" But they were silent. CEB 5 Looking around at them with anger, deeply grieved at their unyielding hearts, he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he did, and his hand was made healthy. NRS 5 He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. CEB 6 At that, the Pharisees got together with the supporters of Herod to plan how to destroy Jesus. NRS 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. CEB 7 Jesus left with his disciples and went to the lake. A large crowd followed him because they had heard what he was doing. They were from Galilee, NRS 7 Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; CEB 8 Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the area surrounding Tyre and Sidon. NRS 8 hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. CEB 9 Jesus told his disciples to get a small boat ready for him so the crowd wouldn't crush him. NRS 9 He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; CEB 10 He had healed so many people that everyone who was sick pushed forward so that they could touch him. NRS 10 for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. CEB 11 Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down at his feet and shouted, "You are God's Son!" NRS 11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, "You are the Son of God!" CEB 12 But he strictly ordered them not to reveal who he was. NRS 12 But he sternly ordered them not to make him known. CEB 13 Jesus went up on a mountain and called those he wanted, and they came to him. NRS 13 He went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. CEB 14 He appointed twelve and called them apostles. He appointed them to be with him, to be sent out to preach, NRS 14 And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message, CEB 15 and to have authority to throw out demons. NRS 15 and to have authority to cast out demons. CEB 16 He appointed twelve: Peter, a name he gave Simon; NRS 16 So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); CEB 17 James and John, Zebedee's sons, whom he nicknamed Boanerges, which means "sons of Thunder"; NRS 17 James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); CEB 18 and Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James, Alphaeus' son; Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean; NRS 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, CEB 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus. NRS 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Then he went home; CEB 20 Jesus entered a house. A crowd gathered again so that it was impossible for him and his followers even to eat. NRS 20 and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. CEB 21 When his family heard what was happening, they came to take control of him. They were saying, "He's out of his mind!" NRS 21 When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, "He has gone out of his mind." CEB 22 The legal experts came down from Jerusalem. Over and over they charged, "He's possessed by Beelzebul. He throws out demons with the authority of the ruler of demons." NRS 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons." CEB 23 When Jesus called them together he spoke to them in a parable: "How can Satan throw Satan out? NRS 23 And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? CEB 24 A kingdom involved in civil war will collapse. NRS 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. CEB 25 And a house torn apart by divisions will collapse. NRS 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. CEB 26 If Satan rebels against himself and is divided, then he can't endure. He's done for. NRS 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. CEB 27 No one gets into the house of a strong person and steals anything without first tying up the strong person. Only then can the house be burglarized. NRS 27 But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. CEB 28 I assure you that human beings will be forgiven for everything, for all sins and insults of every kind. NRS 28 "Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; CEB 29 But whoever insults the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. That person is guilty of a sin with consequences that last forever." NRS 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"— CEB 30 He said this because the legal experts were saying, "He's possessed by an evil spirit." NRS 30 for they had said, "He has an unclean spirit." CEB 31 His mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside and sent word to him, calling for him. NRS 31 Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. CEB 32 A crowd was seated around him, and those sent to him said, "Look, your mother, brothers, and sisters are outside looking for you." NRS 32 A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you." CEB 33 He replied, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" NRS 33 And he replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" CEB 34 Looking around at those seated around him in a circle, he said, "Look, here are my mother and my brothers. NRS 34 And looking at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! CEB 35 Whoever does God's will is my brother, sister, and mother." NRS 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."
