David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, ESV 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, NIV 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, ESV 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, NIV 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, ESV 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, NIV 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, ESV 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, NIV 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, ESV 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. NIV 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. ESV 12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, NIV 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, ESV 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, NIV 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, ESV 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, NIV 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Elihud, ESV 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, NIV 15 Elihud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, ESV 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. NIV 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. ESV 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. NIV 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. ESV 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. NIV 18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about : His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. ESV 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. NIV 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. ESV 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. NIV 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. ESV 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." NIV 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” ESV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: NIV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ESV 23 "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel"(which means, God with us). NIV 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). ESV 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, NIV 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. ESV 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. NIV 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
