CEB 5 Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple treat the Sabbath as any other day and are still innocent? NRS 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests in the temple break the sabbath and yet are guiltless? CEB 6 But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. NRS 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. CEB 7 If you had known what this means, I want mercy and not sacrifice, you wouldn't have condemned the innocent. NRS 7 But if you had known what this means, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. CEB 8 The Human One is Lord of the Sabbath." NRS 8 For the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath." CEB 9 Jesus left that place and went into their synagogue. NRS 9 He left that place and entered their synagogue; CEB 10 A man with a withered hand was there. Wanting to bring charges against Jesus, they asked, "Does the Law allow a person to heal on the Sabbath?" NRS 10 a man was there with a withered hand, and they asked him, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath?" so that they might accuse him. CEB 11 Jesus replied, "Who among you has a sheep that falls into a pit on the Sabbath and will not take hold of it and pull it out? NRS 11 He said to them, "Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and lift it out? CEB 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! So the Law allows a person to do what is good on the Sabbath." NRS 12 How much more valuable is a human being than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath." CEB 13 Then Jesus said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he did and it was made healthy, just like the other one. NRS 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and it was restored, as sound as the other. CEB 14 The Pharisees went out and met in order to find a way to destroy Jesus. NRS 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him. CEB 15 Jesus knew what they intended to do, so he went away from there. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them all. NRS 15 When Jesus became aware of this, he departed. Many crowds followed him, and he cured all of them, CEB 16 But he ordered them not to spread the word about him, NRS 16 and he ordered them not to make him known. CEB 17 so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: NRS 17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah: CEB 18 Look, my Servant whom I chose, the one I love, in whom I find great pleasure. I'll put my Spirit upon him, and he'll announce judgment to the Gentiles. NRS 18 "Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. CEB 19 He won't argue or shout, and nobody will hear his voice in the streets. NRS 19 He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. CEB 20 He won't break a bent stalk, and he won't snuff out a smoldering wick, until he makes justice win. NRS 20 He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick until he brings justice to victory. CEB 21 And the Gentiles will put their hope in his name. NRS 21 And in his name the Gentiles will hope." CEB 22 They brought to Jesus a demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to speak. Jesus healed him so that he could both speak and see. NRS 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons." CEB 25 Because Jesus knew what they were thinking, he replied, “Every kingdom involved in civil war becomes a wasteland. Every city or house torn apart by divisions will collapse. NRS 25 He knew what they were thinking and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. CEB 26 If Satan throws out Satan, he is at war with himself. How then can his kingdom endure? NRS 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? CEB 27 And if I throw out demons by the authority of Beelzebul, then by whose authority do your followers throw them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. NRS 27 If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. CEB 28 But if I throw out demons by the power of God's Spirit, then God's kingdom has already overtaken you. NRS 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. How can you speak good things while you are evil? What fills the heart comes out of the mouth. NRS 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. CEB 35 Good people bring out good things from their good treasure. But evil people bring out evil things from their evil treasure. CEB 39 But he replied, “An evil and unfaithful generation searches for a sign, but it won't receive any sign except Jonah's sign. NRS 39 But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. CEB 40 Just as Jonah was in the whale's belly for three days and three nights, so the Human One will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. NRS 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth. CEB 41 The citizens of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it as guilty, because they changed their hearts and lives in response to Jonah's preaching. When it arrives, it finds the place vacant, cleaned up, and decorated. NRS 44 Then it says, "I will return to my house from which I came.' When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. CEB 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself. They go in and make their home there. That person is worse off at the end than at the beginning. This is the way it will be also for this evil generation." NRS 45 Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also with this evil generation." CEB 46 While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and brothers stood outside trying to speak with him.
