Matthew 16

ESV 1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. NIV 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. ESV 2 He answered them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' NIV 2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ ESV 3 And in the morning, 'It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.'You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. NIV 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. ESV 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." So he left them and departed. NIV 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away. ESV 5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. NIV 5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. ESV 6 Jesus said to them, "Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NIV 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ESV 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread." NIV 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.” ESV 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, "O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? NIV 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? ESV 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? NIV 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? ESV 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? NIV 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? ESV 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NIV 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ESV 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. NIV 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. ESV 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" NIV 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” ESV 14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." NIV 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” ESV 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" NIV 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” ESV 16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." NIV 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” ESV 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. NIV 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. ESV 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. NIV 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hadeswill not overcome it. ESV 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." NIV 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will bebound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will beloosed in heaven.” ESV 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. NIV 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. ESV 21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. NIV 21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. ESV 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you." NIV 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” ESV 23 But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man." NIV 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” ESV 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. NIV 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. ESV 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. NIV 25 For whoever wants to save their lifewill lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. ESV 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? NIV 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? ESV 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. NIV 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. ESV 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
