GOD'S WORD Translation

New International Version

Psalm 42

GW 1 As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. NIV 1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. GW 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When may I come to see God's face? NIV 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? GW 3 My tears are my food day and night. People ask me all day long, "Where is your God?" NIV 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” GW 4 I will remember these things as I pour out my soul: how I used to walk with the crowd and lead it in a procession to God's house. [I sang] songs of joy and thanksgiving while crowds of people celebrated a festival. NIV 4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty Onewith shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng. GW 5 Why are you discouraged, my soul? Why are you so restless? Put your hope in God, because I will still praise him. He is my savior and my God. NIV 5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. GW 6 My soul is discouraged. That is why I will remember you in the land of Jordan, on the peaks of Hermon, on Mount Mizar. NIV 6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar. GW 7 One deep sea calls to another at the roar of your waterspouts. All the whitecaps on your waves have swept over me. NIV 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. GW 8 The LORD commands his mercy during the day, and at night his song is with me-- a prayer to the God of my life. NIV 8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life. GW 9 I will ask God, my rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I walk around in mourning while the enemy oppresses me?" NIV 9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?” GW 10 With a shattering blow to my bones, my enemies taunt me. They ask me all day long, "Where is your God?" NIV 10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?” GW 11 Why are you discouraged, my soul? Why are you so restless? Put your hope in God, because I will still praise him. He is my savior and my God. NIV 11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
