Psalm 81

CEB 1 Rejoice out loud to God, our strength! Shout for joy to Jacob's God! NRS 1 Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob. CEB 2 Take up a song and strike the drum! Sweet lyre along with harp! NRS 2 Raise a song, sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp. CEB 3 Blow the horn on the new moon, at the full moon, for our day of celebration! NRS 3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our festal day. CEB 4 Because this is the law for Israel; this is a rule of Jacob's God. NRS 4 For it is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob. CEB 5 He made it a decree for Joseph when he went out against the land of Egypt, when I heard a language I did not yet know: NRS 5 He made it a decree in Joseph, when he went out over the land of Egypt. I hear a voice I had not known: CEB 6 “I lifted the burden off your shoulders; your hands are free of the brick basket! NRS 6 "I relieved your shoulder of the burden; your hands were freed from the basket. CEB 7 In distress you cried out, so I rescued you. I answered you in the secret of thunder. I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah NRS 7 In distress you called, and I rescued you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. (Selah) CEB 8 Listen, my people, I'm warning you! If only you would listen to me, Israel. NRS 8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you; O Israel, if you would but listen to me! CEB 9 There must be no foreign god among you. You must not bow down to any strange deity. NRS 9 There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god. CEB 10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up from Egypt's land. Open your mouth wide—I will fill it up! NRS 10 I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it. CEB 11 But my people wouldn't listen to my voice. Israel simply wasn't agreeable toward me. NRS 11 "But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. CEB 12 So I sent them off to follow their willful hearts; they followed their own advice. NRS 12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. CEB 13 How I wish my people would listen to me! How I wish Israel would walk in my ways! NRS 13 O that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! CEB 14 Then I would subdue their enemies in a second; I would turn my hand against their foes. NRS 14 Then I would quickly subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their foes. CEB 15 Those who hate the LORD would grovel before me, and their doom would last forever! NRS 15 Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him, and their doom would last forever. CEB 16 But I would feed you with the finest wheat. I would satisfy you with honey from the rock.” NRS 16 I would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."
