Psalm 88

CEB 1 LORD, God of my salvation, by day I cry out, even at night, before you— NRS 1 O Lord, God of my salvation, when, at night, I cry out in your presence, CEB 2 let my prayer reach you! Turn your ear to my outcry NRS 2 let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry. CEB 3 because my whole being is filled with distress; my life is at the very brink of hell. NRS 3 For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. CEB 4 I am considered as one of those plummeting into the pit. I am like those who are beyond help, NRS 4 I am counted among those who go down to the Pit; I am like those who have no help, CEB 5 drifting among the dead, lying in the grave, like dead bodies— those you don't remember anymore, those who are cut off from your power. NRS 5 like those forsaken among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. CEB 6 You placed me down in the deepest pit, in places dark and deep. NRS 6 You have put me in the depths of the Pit, in the regions dark and deep. CEB 7 Your anger smothers me; you subdue me with it, wave after wave. Selah NRS 7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. (Selah) CEB 8 You've made my friends distant. You've made me disgusting to them. I can't escape. I'm trapped! NRS 8 You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a thing of horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape; CEB 9 My eyes are tired of looking at my suffering. I've been calling out to you every day, LORD— I've had my hands outstretched to you! NRS 9 my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call on you, O Lord; I spread out my hands to you. CEB 10 Do you work wonders for the dead? Do ghosts rise up and give you thanks? Selah NRS 10 Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the shades rise up to praise you? (Selah) CEB 11 Is your faithful love proclaimed in the grave, your faithfulness in the underworld? NRS 11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon? CEB 12 Are your wonders known in the land of darkness, your righteousness in the land of oblivion? NRS 12 Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your saving help in the land of forgetfulness? CEB 13 But I cry out to you, LORD! My prayer meets youfirst thing in the morning! NRS 13 But I, O Lord, cry out to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. CEB 14 Why do you reject my very being, LORD? Why do you hide your face from me? NRS 14 O Lord, why do you cast me off? Why do you hide your face from me? CEB 15 Since I was young I've been afflicted, I've been dying. I've endured your terrors. I'm lifeless. NRS 15 Wretched and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am desperate. CEB 16 Your fiery anger has overwhelmed me; your terrors have destroyed me. NRS 16 Your wrath has swept over me; your dread assaults destroy me. CEB 17 They surround me all day long like water; they engulf me completely. NRS 17 They surround me like a flood all day long; from all sides they close in on me. CEB 18 You've made my loved ones and companions distant. My only friend is darkness. NRS 18 You have caused friend and neighbor to shun me; my companions are in darkness.
