Romans 2

RSVA 1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, whoever you are, when you judge another; for in passing judgment upon him you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things. NIV 1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. RSVA 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who do such things. NIV 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. RSVA 3 Do you suppose, O man, that when you judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself, you will escape the judgment of God? NIV 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? RSVA 4 Or do you presume upon the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not know that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? NIV 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? RSVA 5 But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. NIV 5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. RSVA 6 For he will render to every man according to his works: NIV 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” RSVA 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; NIV 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. RSVA 8 but for those who are factious and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury. NIV 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. RSVA 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, NIV 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; RSVA 10 but glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. NIV 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. RSVA 11 For God shows no partiality. NIV 11 For God does not show favoritism. RSVA 12 All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. NIV 12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. RSVA 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. NIV 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. RSVA 14 When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. NIV 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. RSVA 15 They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them NIV 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) RSVA 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. NIV 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares. RSVA 17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely upon the law and boast of your relation to God NIV 17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; RSVA 18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed in the law, NIV 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; RSVA 19 and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, NIV 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, RSVA 20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth-- NIV 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— RSVA 21 you then who teach others, will you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? NIV 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? RSVA 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? NIV 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? RSVA 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? NIV 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? RSVA 24 For, as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you." NIV 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” RSVA 25 Circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law; but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. NIV 25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. RSVA 26 So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? NIV 26 So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? RSVA 27 Then those who are physically uncircumcised but keep the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. NIV 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. RSVA 28 For he is not a real Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical. NIV 28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. RSVA 29 He is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart, spiritual and not literal. His praise is not from men but from God. NIV 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.
