1 Hear ye this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel.
1
Listen to this message that I am singing for you, a lament, house of Israel:
2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
2
She has fallen; Virgin Israel will never rise again. She lies abandoned on her land, with no one to raise her up.
3 For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, to the house of Israel.
3
For the Lord God says: The city that marches out a thousand [strong] will have [only] a hundred left, and the one that marches out a hundred [strong] will have [only] ten left in the house of Israel.
4 For thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live;
4
For the Lord says to the house of Israel: Seek Me and live!
5 but seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall come to nought.
5
Do not seek Bethel or go to Gilgal or journey to Beer-sheba, for Gilgal will certainly go into exile, and Bethel will come to nothing.
6 Seek Jehovah, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el.
6
Seek Yahweh and live, or He will spread like fire [throughout] the house of Joseph; it will consume [everything,] with no one at Bethel to extinguish it.
7 Ye who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,
7
Those who turn justice into wormwood throw righteousness to the ground.
8 [seek him] that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name);
8
The One who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns darkness into dawn and darkens day into night, who summons the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the earth- Yahweh is His name.
9 that bringeth sudden destruction upon the strong, so that destruction cometh upon the fortress.
9
He brings destruction on the strong, and it falls on the stronghold.
10 They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
10
They hate the one who convicts [the guilty] at the city gate and despise the one who speaks with integrity.
11 Forasmuch therefore as ye trample upon the poor, and take exactions from him of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink the wine thereof.
11
Therefore, because you trample on the poor and exact a grain tax from him, you will never live in the houses of cut stone you have built; you will never drink the wine from the lush vineyards you have planted.
12 For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins--ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate [from their right].
12
For I know your crimes are many and your sins innumerable. They oppress the righteous, take a bribe, and deprive the poor of justice at the gates.
13 Therefore he that is prudent shall keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.
13
Therefore, the wise person will keep silent at such a time, for the days are evil.
14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be with you, as ye say.
14
Seek good and not evil so that you may live, and the Lord, the God of Hosts, will be with you, as you have claimed.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish justice in the gate: it may be that Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.
15
Hate evil and love good; establish justice in the gate. Perhaps the Lord, the God of Hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
16 Therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the Lord: Wailing shall be in all the broad ways; and they shall say in all the streets, Alas! Alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful in lamentation to wailing.
16
Therefore Yahweh, the God of Hosts, the Lord, says: There will be wailing in all the public squares; they will cry out in anguish in all the streets. The farmer will be called on to mourn, and professional mournersto wail.
17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing; for I will pass through the midst of thee, saith Jehovah.
17
There will be wailing in all the vineyards, for I will pass among you. The Lord has spoken.
18 Woe unto you that desire the day of Jehovah! Wherefore would ye have the day of Jehovah? It is darkness, and not light.
18
Woe to you who long for the Day of the Lord! What will the Day of the Lord be for you? It will be darkness and not light.
19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
19
It will be like a man who flees from a lion only to have a bear confront him. He goes home and rests his hand against the wall only to have a snake bite him.
20 Shall not the day of Jehovah be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
20
Won't the Day of the Lord be darkness rather than light, even gloom without any brightness in it?
21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
21
I hate, I despise your feasts! I can't stand the stench of your solemn assemblies.
22 Yea, though ye offer me your burnt-offerings and meal-offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts.
22
Even if you offer Me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept [them]; I will have no regard for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle.
23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
23
Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
24
But let justice flow like water, and righteousness, like an unfailing stream.
25 Did ye bring unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
25
"House of Israel, was it sacrifices and grain offerings that you presented to Me during the 40 years in the wilderness?
26 Yea, ye have borne the tabernacle of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
26
But you have taken up Sakkuthyour king and Kaiwanyour star god, images you have made for yourselves.
27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith Jehovah, whose name is the God of hosts.
27
So I will send you into exile beyond Damascus." Yahweh, the God of Hosts, is His name. He has spoken.
