New International Version NIV
Lexham English Bible LEB
1 Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!
1
Alas [for] those being at ease in Zion, and those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notables of the best of the nations! The house of Israel resorts to them.
2 Go to Kalneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?
2
Cross over [to] Calneh and see, and go from there [to] Hamath Rabbah and go down [to] Gath of the Philistines. [Are] you better than these kingdoms, or is their territory greater than your territory?
3 You put off the day of disaster and bring near a reign of terror.
3
You that put off the day of disaster and bring near a reign of violence!
4 You lie on beds adorned with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.
4
[Alas for] those who lie on beds of ivory and lounge on their couches, and those eating young rams from [the] sheep and goats, and bull-calves from the middle of [the] animal stall.
5 You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.
5
[Alas for those] who sing to the tune of the harp; like David they improvise on instruments of music.
6 You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
6
[Alas for those] who drink from sprinkling bowls of wine and anoint themselves with the best of olive oils and are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.
7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end.
7
Therefore, they shall now go into exile at the head of the exiles and the feast of lounging shall pass away.
8 The Sovereign LORD has sworn by himself—the LORD God Almighty declares: “I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”
8
My Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself, {declares} Yahweh, the God of hosts: "I abhor the pride of Jacob and I hate his citadel fortresses and I will deliver [the] city and its fullness!"
9 If ten people are left in one house, they too will die.
9
And then if ten people remain in one house, they too will die.
10 And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush! We must not mention the name of the LORD.”
10
And [if] one's relative, who burns [the body], lifts it up and brings the body out of the house and he will say to someone in the innermost part of the house, "[Are there] any more with you?" and he will say, "None," then he will say, "Silence," because [we] must not invoke the name of Yahweh.
11 For the LORD has given the command, and he will smash the great house into pieces and the small house into bits.
11
Look, Yahweh [is] going to command and the great house will be destroyed [to] bits and the little house [to] pieces.
12 Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness—
12
Do horses run on rocks, or does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and [the] fruit of righteousness into wormwood!
13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debarand say, “Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?”
13
[You] who rejoice over Lo-Debar, who say, "Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves by our strength?"
14 For the LORD God Almighty declares, “I will stir up a nation against you, Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah.”
14
Indeed, I [am] going to raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, {declares} Yahweh, the God of hosts. And they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath up to the wadi of the Arabah.
