1 OR v’era in Cesarea un certo uomo chiamato per nome Cornelio, centurione della schiera detta Italica.

2 Esso, essendo uomo pio e temente Iddio, con tutta la sua casa, e facendo molte limosine al popolo, e pregando Iddio del continuo,

3 vide chiaramente in visione, intorno l’ora nona del giorno, un angelo di Dio, che entrò a lui, e gli disse: Cornelio.

4 Ed egli, riguardatolo fiso, e tutto spaventato, disse: Che v’è, Signore? E l’angelo gli disse: Le tue orazioni, e le tue limosine, son salite davanti a Dio per una ricordanza.

5 Or dunque, manda uomini in Ioppe, e fa’ chiamare Simone, il quale è soprannominato Pietro.

6 Egli alberga appo un certo Simone coiaio, che ha la casa presso del mare; esso ti dirà ciò ch’ei ti convien fare.

7 Ora, come l’angelo che parlava a Cornelio se ne fu partito, egli, chiamati due de’ suoi famigli, ed un soldato di que’ che si ritenevano del continuo appresso di lui, uomo pio,

8 e raccontata loro ogni cosa, li mandò in Ioppe.

9 E il giorno seguente, procedendo essi al lor cammino, ed avvicinandosi alla città, Pietro salì in sul tetto della casa, intorno l’ora sesta, per fare orazione.

10 Or avvenne ch’egli ebbe gran fame, e desiderava prender cibo; e come que’ di casa gliene apparecchiavano, gli venne un ratto di mente.

11 E vide il cielo aperto, ed una vela simile ad un gran lenzuolo, che scendeva sopra lui, legato per li quattro capi, e calato in terra;

12 nella quale vi erano degli animali terrestri a quattro piedi, e delle fiere, e de’ rettili, e degli uccelli del cielo d’ogni maniera.

13 Ed una voce gli fu indirizzata, dicendo: Levati, Pietro, ammazza, e mangia.

14 Ma Pietro disse: In niun modo, Signore, poichè io non ho giammai mangiato nulla d’immondo, nè di contaminato.

15 E la voce gli disse la seconda volta: Le cose che Iddio ha purificate, non farle tu immonde.

16 Or questo avvenne fino a tre volte; e poi la vela fu ritratta in cielo.

17 E come Pietro era in dubbio in sè stesso che cosa potesse esser quella visione ch’egli avea veduta, ecco, gli uomini mandati da Cornelio, avendo domandato della casa di Simone, furono alla porta.

18 E chiamato alcuno, domandarono se Simone, soprannominato Pietro, albergava ivi entro.

19 E come Pietro era pensoso intorno alla visione, lo Spirito gli disse: Ecco, tre uomini ti cercano.

20 Levati adunque, e scendi, e va’ con loro, senza farne difficoltà, perciocchè io li ho mandati.

21 E Pietro, sceso agli uomini che gli erano stati mandati da Cornelio, disse loro: Ecco, io son quello che voi cercate; quale è la cagione per la qual siete qui?

22 Ed essi dissero: Cornelio, centurione, uomo giusto e temente Iddio, e del quale rende buona testimonianza tutta la nazion de’ Giudei, è stato divinamente avvisato da un santo angelo di farti chiamare in casa sua, e d’udir ragionamenti da te.

23 Pietro adunque, avendoli convitati d’entrare in casa, li albergò; poi, il giorno seguente, andò con loro; ed alcuni de’ fratelli di que’ di Ioppe l’accompagnarono.

24 E il giorno appresso entrarono in Cesarea. Or Cornelio li aspettava, avendo chiamati i suoi parenti ed i suoi intimi amici.

25 E come Pietro entrava, Cornelio, fattoglisi incontro, gli si gittò a’ piedi, e l’adorò.

26 Ma Pietro lo sollevò, dicendo: Levati, io ancora sono uomo.

27 E ragionando con lui, entrò, e trovò molti, che si erano quivi raunati.

28 Ed egli disse loro: Voi sapete come non è lecito ad un uomo Giudeo aggiungersi con uno strano, od entrare in casa sua; ma Iddio mi ha mostrato di non chiamare alcun uomo immondo, o contaminato.

29 Perciò ancora, essendo stato mandato a chiamare, io son venuto senza contradire. Io vi domando adunque: Per qual cagione mi avete mandato a chiamare?

30 E Cornelio disse: Quattro giorni sono, che io fino a quest’ora era digiuno, ed alle nove ore io faceva orazione in casa mia; ed ecco, un uomo si presentò davanti a me, in vestimento risplendente, e disse:

31 Cornelio, la tua orazione è stata esaudita, e le tue limosine sono state ricordate nel cospetto di Dio.

32 Manda adunque in Ioppe, e chiama di là Simone, soprannominato Pietro; egli alberga in casa di Simone coiaio, presso del mare; quando egli sarà venuto, egli ti parlerà.

33 Perciò, in quello stante io mandai a te, e tu hai fatto bene di venire; ed ora noi siamo tutti qui presenti davanti a Dio, per udir tutte le cose che ti sono da Dio state ordinate.

34 Allora Pietro, aperta la bocca, disse: In verità io comprendo, che Iddio non ha riguardo alla qualità delle persone;

35 anzi che in qualunque nazione, chi lo teme, ed opera giustamente, gli è accettevole;

36 secondo la parola ch’egli ha mandata a’ figliuoli d’Israele, evangelizzando pace per Gesù Cristo, ch’è il Signor di tutti.

37 Voi sapete ciò che è avvenuto per tutta la Giudea, cominciando dalla Galilea, dopo il battesimo che Giovanni predicò:

38 come Iddio ha unto di Spirito Santo, e di potenza, Gesù di Nazaret, il quale andò attorno facendo beneficii, e sanando tutti coloro che erano posseduti dal diavolo, perciocchè Iddio era con lui.

39 E noi siamo testimoni, di tutte le cose ch’egli ha fatte nel paese de’ Giudei, e in Gerusalemme; il quale ancora essi hanno ucciso, appiccandolo al legno.

40 Esso ha Iddio risuscitato nel terzo giorno, ed ha fatto che egli è stato manifestato.

41 Non già a tutto il popolo, ma a’ testimoni prima da Dio ordinati, cioè a noi, che abbiamo mangiato e bevuto con lui, dopo ch’egli fu risuscitato da’ morti.

42 Ed egli ci ha comandato di predicare al popolo, e di testimoniare ch’egli è quello che da Dio è stato costituito Giudice de’ vivi e de’ morti.

43 A lui rendono testimonianza tutti i profeti: che chiunque crede in lui, riceve remission de’ peccati per lo nome suo.

44 Mentre Pietro teneva ancora questi ragionamenti, lo Spirito Santo cadde sopra tutti coloro che udivano la parola.

45 E tutti i fedeli della circoncisione, i quali eran venuti con Pietro, stupirono che il dono dello Spirito Santo fosse stato sparso eziandio sopra i Gentili.

46 Poichè li udivano parlar diverse lingue, e magnificare Iddio.

47 Allora Pietro prese a dire: Può alcuno vietar l’acqua, che non sieno battezzati costoro che hanno ricevuto lo Spirito Santo, come ancora noi?

48 Ed egli comandò che fossero battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù. Allora essi lo pregarono che dimorasse quivi alquanti giorni.

1 In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a captain of the Italian Regiment.

2 He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was everyone in his household. He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.

3 One afternoon about three o’clock, he had a vision in which he saw an angel of God coming toward him. “Cornelius!” the angel said.

4 Cornelius stared at him in terror. “What is it, sir?” he asked the angel. And the angel replied, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have been received by God as an offering!

5 Now send some men to Joppa, and summon a man named Simon Peter.

6 He is staying with Simon, a tanner who lives near the seashore.”

7 As soon as the angel was gone, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of his personal attendants.

8 He told them what had happened and sent them off to Joppa.

9 The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon,

10 and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.

11 He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners.

12 In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds.

13 Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”

14 “No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean. ”

15 But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.”

16 The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven.

17 Peter was very perplexed. What could the vision mean? Just then the men sent by Cornelius found Simon’s house. Standing outside the gate,

18 they asked if a man named Simon Peter was staying there.

19 Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, “Three men have come looking for you.

20 Get up, go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation. Don’t worry, for I have sent them.”

21 So Peter went down and said, “I’m the man you are looking for. Why have you come?”

22 They said, “We were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer. He is a devout and God-fearing man, well respected by all the Jews. A holy angel instructed him to summon you to his house so that he can hear your message.”

23 So Peter invited the men to stay for the night. The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of the brothers from Joppa.

24 They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends.

25 As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and worshiped him.

26 But Peter pulled him up and said, “Stand up! I’m a human being just like you!”

27 So they talked together and went inside, where many others were assembled.

28 Peter told them, “You know it is against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you. But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.

29 So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. Now tell me why you sent for me.”

30 Cornelius replied, “Four days ago I was praying in my house about this same time, three o’clock in the afternoon. Suddenly, a man in dazzling clothes was standing in front of me.

31 He told me, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts to the poor have been noticed by God!

32 Now send messengers to Joppa, and summon a man named Simon Peter. He is staying in the home of Simon, a tanner who lives near the seashore.’

33 So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you.”

34 Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.

35 In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.

36 This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel—that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

37 You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began preaching his message of baptism.

38 And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

39 “And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross,

40 but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear,

41 not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

42 And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead.

43 He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name.”

44 Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message.

45 The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too.

46 For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked,

47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?”

48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.
