1 ORA, dopo che ci fummo con gran pena separati da loro, navigammo, e per diritto corso arrivammo a Coo, e il giorno seguente a Rodi, e di là a Patara.

2 E trovata una nave che passava in Fenicia, vi montammo su, e facemmo vela.

3 E, scoperto Cipri, e lasciatolo a man sinistra, navigammo in Siria, ed arrivammo a Tiro; perciocchè quivi si dovea scaricar la nave.

4 E, trovati i discepoli, dimorammo quivi sette giorni; ed essi, per lo Spirito, dicevano a Paolo, che non salisse in Gerusalemme.

5 Ora, dopo che avemmo passati quivi que’ giorni, partimmo, e ci mettemmo in cammino, accompagnati da tutti loro, con le mogli, e figliuoli, fin fuor della città; e postici in ginocchioni in sul lito, facemmo orazione.

6 Poi, abbracciatici gli uni gli altri, montammo in su la nave; e quelli se ne tornarono alle case loro.

7 E noi, compiendo la navigazione, da Tiro arrivammo a Ptolemaida; e, salutati i fratelli, dimorammo un giorno appresso di loro.

8 E il giorno seguente, essendo partiti, arrivammo a Cesarea; ed entrati in casa di Filippo l’evangelista, ch’era l’uno de’ sette, dimorammo appresso di lui.

9 Or egli avea quattro figliuole vergini, le quali profetizzavano.

10 E, dimorando noi quivi molti giorni, un certo profeta, chiamato per nome Agabo, discese di Giudea.

11 Ed egli, essendo venuto a noi, e presa la cintura di Paolo, se ne legò le mani ed i piedi, e disse: Questo dice lo Spirito Santo: Così legheranno i Giudei in Gerusalemme l’uomo di cui è questa cintura, e lo metteranno nelle mani de’ Gentili.

12 Ora, quando udimmo queste cose, e noi, e que’ del luogo, lo pregavamo che non salisse in Gerusalemme.

13 Ma Paolo rispose: Che fate voi, piangendo, e macerandomi il cuore? poichè io sia tutto pronto, non solo ad esser legato, ma eziandio a morire in Gerusalemme, per lo nome del Signor Gesù.

14 E, non potendo egli esser persuaso, noi ci acquetammo, dicendo: La volontà del Signore sia fatta.

15 E, dopo que’ giorni, ci mettemmo in ordine, e salimmo in Gerusalemme.

16 E con noi vennero eziandio alcuni de’ discepoli di Cesarea, menando con loro un certo Mnason Cipriota, antico discepolo, presso il quale dovevamo albergare.

17 Ora, come fummo giunti in Gerusalemme, i fratelli ci accolsero lietamente.

18 E il giorno seguente, Paolo entrò con noi da Giacomo; e tutti gli anziani vi si trovarono.

19 E Paolo, salutatili, raccontò loro ad una ad una le cose che il Signore avea fatte fra i Gentili, per lo suo ministerio.

20 Ed essi, uditele, glorificavano Iddio; poi dissero a Paolo: Fratello, tu vedi quante migliaia vi sono de’ Giudei che hanno creduto; e tutti son zelanti della legge.

21 Or sono stati informati intorno a te, che tu insegni tutti i Giudei, che son fra i Gentili, di rivoltarsi da Mosè, dicendo che non circoncidano i figliuoli, e non camminino secondo i riti.

22 Che devesi adunque fare? del tutto conviene che la moltitudine si raduni, perciocchè udiranno che tu sei venuto.

23 Fa’ dunque questo che ti diciamo. Noi abbiamo quattro uomini, che hanno un voto sopra loro.

24 Prendili teco, e purificati con loro, e fa’ la spesa con loro; acciocchè si tondano il capo, e tutti conoscano che non è nulla di quelle cose delle quali sono stati informati intorno a te; ma che tu ancora procedi osservando la legge.

25 Ma, quant’è a’ Gentili che hanno creduto, noi ne abbiamo scritto, avendo statuito che non osservino alcuna cosa tale; ma solo che si guardino dalle cose sacrificate agl’idoli, e dal sangue, e dalle cose soffocate, e dalla fornicazione.

26 Allora Paolo, presi seco quegli uomini, il giorno seguente, dopo essersi con loro purificato, entrò con loro nel tempio, pubblicando i giorni della purificazione esser compiuti, infino a tanto che l’offerta fu presentata per ciascun di loro.

27 Ora, come i sette giorni erano presso che compiuti, i Giudei dell’Asia, vedutolo nel tempio, commossero tutta la moltitudine, e gli misero le mani addosso,

28 gridando: Uomini Israeliti, venite al soccorso; costui è quell’uomo, che insegna per tutto a tutti una dottrina che è contro al popolo, e contro alla legge, e contro a questo luogo; ed oltre a ciò, ha eziandio menati de’ Greci dentro al tempio, ed ha contaminato questo santo luogo.

29 Perciocchè dinanzi avean veduto Trofimo Efesio nella città con Paolo, e pensavano ch’egli l’avesse menato dentro al tempio.

30 E tutta la città fu commossa, e si fece un concorso di popolo; e, preso Paolo, lo trassero fuor del tempio; e subito le porte furon serrate.

31 Ora, com’essi cercavano d’ucciderlo, il grido salì al capitano della schiera, che tutta Gerusalemme era sottosopra.

32 Ed egli in quello stante prese de’ soldati, e de’ centurioni, e corse a’ Giudei. Ed essi, veduto il capitano, e i soldati, restarono di batter Paolo.

33 E il capitano, accostatosi, lo prese, e comandò che fosse legato di due catene; poi domandò chi egli era, e che cosa avea fatto.

34 E gli uni gridavano una cosa, e gli altri un’altra, nella moltitudine; laonde, non potendone egli saper la certezza, per lo tumulto, comandò ch’egli fosse menato nella rocca.

35 Ed avvenne, quando egli fu sopra i gradi, ch’egli fu portato da’ soldati, per lo sforzo della moltitudine.

36 Poichè la moltitudine del popolo lo seguitava, gridando: Toglilo.

37 OR Paolo, come egli era per esser menato dentro alla rocca, disse al capitano: Emmi egli lecito di dirti qualche cosa? Ed egli disse: Sai tu Greco?

38 Non sei tu quell’Egizio, il quale a’ dì passati suscitò, e menò nel deserto que’ quattromila ladroni?

39 E Paolo disse: Quant’è a me, io son uomo Giudeo, da Tarso, cittadino di quella non ignobile città di Cilicia; or io ti prego che tu mi permetta di parlare al popolo.

40 Ed avendoglielo egli permesso, Paolo, stando in piè sopra i gradi, fece cenno con la mano al popolo. E, fattosi gran silenzio, parlò loro in lingua ebrea, dicendo:

1 After saying farewell to the Ephesian elders, we sailed straight to the island of Cos. The next day we reached Rhodes and then went to Patara.

2 There we boarded a ship sailing for Phoenicia.

3 We sighted the island of Cyprus, passed it on our left, and landed at the harbor of Tyre, in Syria, where the ship was to unload its cargo.

4 We went ashore, found the local believers, and stayed with them a week. These believers prophesied through the Holy Spirit that Paul should not go on to Jerusalem.

5 When we returned to the ship at the end of the week, the entire congregation, including women and children, left the city and came down to the shore with us. There we knelt, prayed,

6 and said our farewells. Then we went aboard, and they returned home.

7 The next stop after leaving Tyre was Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed for one day.

8 The next day we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the Evangelist, one of the seven men who had been chosen to distribute food.

9 He had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy.

10 Several days later a man named Agabus, who also had the gift of prophecy, arrived from Judea.

11 He came over, took Paul’s belt, and bound his own feet and hands with it. Then he said, “The Holy Spirit declares, ‘So shall the owner of this belt be bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.’”

12 When we heard this, we and the local believers all begged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.

13 But he said, “Why all this weeping? You are breaking my heart! I am ready not only to be jailed at Jerusalem but even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus.”

14 When it was clear that we couldn’t persuade him, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”

15 After this we packed our things and left for Jerusalem.

16 Some believers from Caesarea accompanied us, and they took us to the home of Mnason, a man originally from Cyprus and one of the early believers.

17 When we arrived, the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem welcomed us warmly.

18 The next day Paul went with us to meet with James, and all the elders of the Jerusalem church were present.

19 After greeting them, Paul gave a detailed account of the things God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry.

20 After hearing this, they praised God. And then they said, “You know, dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also believed, and they all follow the law of Moses very seriously.

21 But the Jewish believers here in Jerusalem have been told that you are teaching all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn their backs on the laws of Moses. They’ve heard that you teach them not to circumcise their children or follow other Jewish customs.

22 What should we do? They will certainly hear that you have come.

23 “Here’s what we want you to do. We have four men here who have completed their vow.

24 Go with them to the Temple and join them in the purification ceremony, paying for them to have their heads ritually shaved. Then everyone will know that the rumors are all false and that you yourself observe the Jewish laws.

25 “As for the Gentile believers, they should do what we already told them in a letter: They should abstain from eating food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.”

26 So Paul went to the Temple the next day with the other men. They had already started the purification ritual, so he publicly announced the date when their vows would end and sacrifices would be offered for each of them.

27 The seven days were almost ended when some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul in the Temple and roused a mob against him. They grabbed him,

28 yelling, “Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who preaches against our people everywhere and tells everybody to disobey the Jewish laws. He speaks against the Temple—and even defiles this holy place by bringing in Gentiles. ”

29 (For earlier that day they had seen him in the city with Trophimus, a Gentile from Ephesus, and they assumed Paul had taken him into the Temple.)

30 The whole city was rocked by these accusations, and a great riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out of the Temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind him.

31 As they were trying to kill him, word reached the commander of the Roman regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.

32 He immediately called out his soldiers and officers and ran down among the crowd. When the mob saw the commander and the troops coming, they stopped beating Paul.

33 Then the commander arrested him and ordered him bound with two chains. He asked the crowd who he was and what he had done.

34 Some shouted one thing and some another. Since he couldn’t find out the truth in all the uproar and confusion, he ordered that Paul be taken to the fortress.

35 As Paul reached the stairs, the mob grew so violent the soldiers had to lift him to their shoulders to protect him.

36 And the crowd followed behind, shouting, “Kill him, kill him!”

37 As Paul was about to be taken inside, he said to the commander, “May I have a word with you?” “Do you know Greek?” the commander asked, surprised.

38 “Aren’t you the Egyptian who led a rebellion some time ago and took 4,000 members of the Assassins out into the desert?”

39 “No,” Paul replied, “I am a Jew and a citizen of Tarsus in Cilicia, which is an important city. Please, let me talk to these people.”

40 The commander agreed, so Paul stood on the stairs and motioned to the people to be quiet. Soon a deep silence enveloped the crowd, and he addressed them in their own language, Aramaic.
