1 Festo adunque, essendo entrato nella provincia, tre giorni appresso salì di Cesarea in Gerusalemme.

2 E il sommo sacerdote, ed i principali de’ Giudei, comparvero dinanzi a lui, contro a Paolo.

3 E lo pregavano, chiedendo una grazia contro a lui, che egli lo facesse venire in Gerusalemme, ponendo insidie, per ucciderlo per lo cammino.

4 Ma Festo rispose, che Paolo era guardato in Cesarea; e che egli tosto vi andrebbe.

5 Quegli adunque di voi, disse egli, che potranno, scendano meco; e se vi è in quest’uomo alcun misfatto, accusinlo.

6 Ed essendo dimorato appresso di loro non più di otto o di dieci giorni discese in Cesarea; e il giorno seguente, postosi a sedere in sul tribunale, comandò che Paolo gli fosse menato davanti.

7 E, quando egli fu giunto, i Giudei che erano discesi di Gerusalemme, gli furono d’intorno, portando contro a Paolo molte e gravi accuse, le quali però essi non potevano provare. Dicendo lui a sua difesa:

8 Io non ho peccato nè contro alla legge de’ Giudei, nè contro al tempio, nè contro a Cesare.

9 Ma Festo, volendo far cosa grata ai Giudei, rispose a Paolo, e disse: Vuoi tu salire in Gerusalemme, ed ivi esser giudicato davanti a me intorno a queste cose?

10 Ma Paolo disse: Io comparisco davanti al tribunal di Cesare, ove mi conviene esser giudicato; io non ho fatto torto alcuno a’ Giudei, come tu stesso lo riconosci molto bene.

11 Perciocchè se pure ho misfatto, o commessa cosa alcuna degna di morte, non ricuso di morire; ma, se non è nulla di quelle cose, delle quali costoro mi accusano, niuno può donarmi loro nelle mani; io mi richiamo a Cesare.

12 Allora Festo, tenuto parlamento col consiglio, rispose: Tu ti sei richiamato a Cesare? a Cesare andrai.

13 E DOPO alquanti giorni, il re Agrippa, e Bernice, arrivarono in Cesarea, per salutar Festo.

14 E, facendo quivi dimora per molti giorni, Festo raccontò al re l’affare di Paolo, dicendo: Un certo uomo è stato lasciato prigione da Felice.

15 Per lo quale, quando io fui in Gerusalemme, comparvero davanti a me i principali sacerdoti, e gli anziani de’ Giudei, chiedendo sentenza di condannazione contro a lui.

16 A’ quali risposi che non è l’usanza de’ Romani di donare alcuno, per farlo morire, avanti che l’accusato abbia gli accusatori in faccia e gli sia stato dato luogo di purgarsi dell’accusa.

17 Essendo eglino adunque venuti qua, io, senza indugio, il giorno seguente, sedendo in sul tribunale, comandai che quell’uomo mi fosse menato davanti.

18 Contro al quale gli accusatori, essendo compariti, non proposero alcuna accusa delle cose che io sospettava.

19 Ma aveano contro a lui certe quistioni intorno alla lor superstizione, ed intorno ad un certo Gesù morto, il qual Paolo dicea esser vivente.

20 Ora, stando io in dubbio come io procederei nell’inquisizion di questo fatto, gli dissi se voleva andare in Gerusalemme, e quivi esser giudicato intorno a queste cose.

21 Ma, essendosi Paolo richiamato ad Augusto, per esser riserbato al giudicio d’esso, io comandai ch’egli fosse guardato, finchè io lo mandassi a Cesare.

22 Ed Agrippa disse a Festo: Ben vorrei ancor io udir cotest’uomo. Ed egli disse: Domani l’udirai.

23 Il giorno seguente adunque, essendo venuti Agrippa e Bernice, con molta pompa, ed entrati nella sala dell’udienza, co’ capitani, e co’ principali della città, per comandamento di Festo, Paolo fu menato quivi.

24 E Festo disse: Re Agrippa, e voi tutti che siete qui presenti con noi, voi vedete costui, al quale tutta la moltitudine de’ Giudei ha dato querela davanti a me, ed in Gerusalemme, e qui, gridando che non convien che egli viva più.

25 Ma io, avendo trovato ch’egli non ha fatta cosa alcuna degna di morte, ed egli stesso essendosi richiamato ad Augusto, io son deliberato di mandarglielo.

26 E, perciocchè io non ho nulla di certo da scriverne al mio signore, l’ho menato qui davanti a voi, e principalmente davanti a te, o re Agrippa, acciocchè, fattane l’inquisizione, io abbia che scrivere.

27 Perciocchè mi par cosa fuor di ragione di mandare un prigione, e non significar le accuse che son contro a lui.

1 Three days after Festus arrived in Caesarea to take over his new responsibilities, he left for Jerusalem,

2 where the leading priests and other Jewish leaders met with him and made their accusations against Paul.

3 They asked Festus as a favor to transfer Paul to Jerusalem (planning to ambush and kill him on the way).

4 But Festus replied that Paul was at Caesarea and he himself would be returning there soon.

5 So he said, “Those of you in authority can return with me. If Paul has done anything wrong, you can make your accusations.”

6 About eight or ten days later Festus returned to Caesarea, and on the following day he took his seat in court and ordered that Paul be brought in.

7 When Paul arrived, the Jewish leaders from Jerusalem gathered around and made many serious accusations they couldn’t prove.

8 Paul denied the charges. “I am not guilty of any crime against the Jewish laws or the Temple or the Roman government,” he said.

9 Then Festus, wanting to please the Jews, asked him, “Are you willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there?”

10 But Paul replied, “No! This is the official Roman court, so I ought to be tried right here. You know very well I am not guilty of harming the Jews.

11 If I have done something worthy of death, I don’t refuse to die. But if I am innocent, no one has a right to turn me over to these men to kill me. I appeal to Caesar!”

12 Festus conferred with his advisers and then replied, “Very well! You have appealed to Caesar, and to Caesar you will go!”

13 A few days later King Agrippa arrived with his sister, Bernice, to pay their respects to Festus.

14 During their stay of several days, Festus discussed Paul’s case with the king. “There is a prisoner here,” he told him, “whose case was left for me by Felix.

15 When I was in Jerusalem, the leading priests and Jewish elders pressed charges against him and asked me to condemn him.

16 I pointed out to them that Roman law does not convict people without a trial. They must be given an opportunity to confront their accusers and defend themselves.

17 “When his accusers came here for the trial, I didn’t delay. I called the case the very next day and ordered Paul brought in.

18 But the accusations made against him weren’t any of the crimes I expected.

19 Instead, it was something about their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul insists is alive.

20 I was at a loss to know how to investigate these things, so I asked him whether he would be willing to stand trial on these charges in Jerusalem.

21 But Paul appealed to have his case decided by the emperor. So I ordered that he be held in custody until I could arrange to send him to Caesar.”

22 “I’d like to hear the man myself,” Agrippa said. And Festus replied, “You will—tomorrow!”

23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived at the auditorium with great pomp, accompanied by military officers and prominent men of the city. Festus ordered that Paul be brought in.

24 Then Festus said, “King Agrippa and all who are here, this is the man whose death is demanded by all the Jews, both here and in Jerusalem.

25 But in my opinion he has done nothing deserving death. However, since he appealed his case to the emperor, I have decided to send him to Rome.

26 “But what shall I write the emperor? For there is no clear charge against him. So I have brought him before all of you, and especially you, King Agrippa, so that after we examine him, I might have something to write.

27 For it makes no sense to send a prisoner to the emperor without specifying the charges against him!”
